Holiday Inn Express Wuhou Chengdu

Not sure the difference between Holiday Inn Express and Holiday Inn but this one is in the same league as other Holiday Inn hotels. And addition to that, it's very well maintained. Staffs were very nice and helpful, allowed us using hotel computers (in business centre) long after check out.

For business, I needed to travel to Chengdu, China. My company restricts our hotel expense to $350 RNB (~$53) per night, so it was difficult to find a chain hotel in this price range. Previous colleagues that had stayed in Chengdu the allowed had a bad experience with filthy rooms, no heat or hot water, and I was a bit nervous. Fortunately, I found the HIE-Wuhuo at $348 RNB, so I was good to go. When I checked into the room, it was freezing cold. It took me a few minutes to realize that the housekeeping had left a window open behind the curtains - why anybody would do this in the dead of winter is beyond me. Since I checked in around midnight, my first night was spent under the covers trying to stay warm until the heat could get the room back up to normal temperature. Other than that I can't say anything bad about the place other than the location is not the best. It was a basic room that had the majority of the necessities required. The one weird thing about the rooms is that the bathroom is separated from the main room by a translucent (not see thru) glass wall, so if you go to the bathroom at night and turn on the bathroom light, it will illuminate the main room. Not a problem if you are traveling by yourself, but not considerate if you are traveling with a companion. The room had a small couch, small desk and a closet. There was a safe, but it wasn't bolted down to anything.

Here's the summary of what you probably want to know most:

- Bed was comfortable - two types of pillows provided: soft & firm
- TV had 4 English channels: CNN, ESPN, HBO, Discovery
- Rooms had wired internet service - worked reasonably well
- Shower pressure was great and hot water was excellent
- Included breakfast was decent (combo Chinese/Western Breakfast)
- 2 bottles of water provided complimentary daily - water not ok to drink
- No refrigerator in the room
- Staff was very helpful

The downside for me was that nobody in that area of Chengdu speaks English, and I admit that I only know about 5 words in Chinese (a few more now that I've been here a week). This area of Chengdu is not near any of the main downtown attractions or business areas, so a taxi will be needed to go anywhere from the hotel. If you do stay here and do not speak Chinese, make sure to talk to the manager Nick. He was really nice and made me flash cards of key areas with both the English name and Chinese symbols so I could just show them to the taxi drivers. I ultimately ended up checking out for convenience purposes after 3 days as I had to take a 30 minute taxi for $50 RNB each way to work, and I found a really nice hotel (subsequent review to follow) one block from where I was working.

Room Tip: If you are going to stay here, make sure you know how to speak chinese.

Smoke-free, clean hotel room. The bed cover had a slight smoke smell, but when I informed them the next day, it was smelling clean. Better than any of the Holiday Inn Express in United States. The buffet breakfast has both Chinese and Western food except that the menu did not change for the 5 days I was there. The last 2 days, I wanted to make waffle, but the waffle mix was not there. I am not too familiar with the location because I was picked up by my friends everyday for our meeting.

Staff is friendly, helpful and speaks good English, breakfast has both Western and Chinese choices, rooms are clean, great shower, water kettle in the room, flatscreen TV with HBO & CNN, and a super-comfortable bed with choice of firm and soft pillows. One drawback for us was no fridge in the room. Some have complained about the location, but I guess it depends on what you want to see & do. It is very close to Jin Lin street (a rebuilt "ancient" street from China, highly recommended) and is located on a main road, making it easy to get taxis. There is also a Carrefour around the corner, KFC, Subway, etc. One suggestion - ask for a room on the back side of the hotel, since the front is noisy with the traffic from the road. All in all a great hotel for a decent price. We will be back again.

Would highly recommend this hotel for someone who is transiting a night in Chengdu between cities in China. It's cheap, comes with breakfast and a very good FREE wi-fi connection. Rooms look newer than the other Holiday Inn Express in the city centre.

It's also located 5 mins taxi ride away from Chengdu's famous "changing faces" show.

Room Tip: We asked for a higher floor and non-smoking floor

It’s hard to fault this new hotel. The receptionists were extremely helpful, the decor throughout is pleasing, the room was exactly as I requested, and whilst they have no baths, the walk-in showers are splendid. The one restaurant serves a large and varied buffet breakfast, although the staff did take a very long time clearing tables with the hotel fully occupied. For dinner it has only a small menu with about 15 items mixing Szechuan and less spicy Chinese cuisine. There is no room service and no minibar, although bottled water is provided.

Whist the hotel itself is exactly what you would expect from this brand, its one problem in my view is its location – right on the 2nd ring road and a very long way from the centre of town. Indeed, walk for 30 minutes in almost any direction and there are hardly any restaurants or shopping outlets. So if local sightseeing is your goal, I suggest you’re better off with the other Holiday Inn Express in the city or one of the other hotels nearer the centre. On the other hand, if you want to be relatively close to the airport or are planning on spending most of your time visiting some of the scenic wonders well outside the city, this hotel will fit the bill nicely.
