“Hardfly a 3 Star Hotel”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

I stayed at the hotel during July 2013. it is ranked as a 4 star hotel. however, it is hardly a 3 star hotel. Moreover, I cannot understand how it is ranked as No. 8 in tripadvisor.
The room we got was extra small. The shoer was so small, that you couldn't move in the shower without touching the walls or the curtain, unless you are a statue. There was also some kind of leak in the shower, so after every shower we took, the floor was flooded with water. There was no mini bar in the room, nor a safe. The English level of the staff was between no English at all to a very poor English, so we couldn't even order a wake up call ! Our room was located about 3 minutes walk from the entrance of the hotel. Whereas an old lady was sent to help us with our luggage, we didn't let her carry it for us, so we did it ourselves, with many steps in the way. The building where our room was located, didn't have an elevator, nor air conditioner. Breakfast was also very poor. This review is written after staying in other 4 hotels during my vacation in China, so I knew what to expect from the hotel, and what I received was far bellow my expectations from what is supposed to be a 4 star hotel in China.

This hotel is uniquely Chinese. They do not speak English at the hotel and there are very few people in Chengdu that speak English. Get a guide! The surrounding neighborhood is great to walk around and shop. You can easily get to the river area and walk as well. McDonald and KFC are 4 blocks away. You can find laundry services on major street away. Staff was extremely nice and we communicated through translation apps on our Iphones.

The hotel is exceptional. Wow!

Room Tip: Pool was broken and needs fixed.

The location of this property absolutely cannot be beat. Next door to the Wenshu Monastery, less than a five minute walk to the subway station. Perfect in every way: big and luxurious rooms with unusual details such as TV in the bath; correct breakfast buffet and friendly staff. Located in the historic reconstructed old-style city center, with plenty of shops and food or tea stalls. What's more, very good quality - price. Only one small complaint:

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side are quieter

This place is really exciting for those of you who are into Chinese style living with all the comfort of modern times. If you travel with a large group, you can have your own courtyard, which is as if you are living in your own park. Fantastic!

Great hotel for china lovers! The rooms are fittet out with traditional chinese furniture and beautiful. Very friendly staff. But be aware that there are some difficulties for european guests: Hardly anybody speaks anything but chinese. The breakfast buffet is 100% chinese. Maintenance engineering should improve.

Nice "old" new hotel. Beds comfortable and room was completly isoldated from the outside noise of the city. We went in March when it wasn't hot, so didn't really suffer the heat that other reviewers mentioned, and didn't need a room with windows.
Staff were plesant and friendly. Breakfast was very good. Bathrooms big, clean and fairly modern.

Real highlight is the location, it's in one of the good parts of Chengdu with stalls and street sellers, just head straight out the main hotel gate and explore.

Negatives: the place stinks of smoke, but so does everywhere else i guess.
The in-room fridges are on the same circut as everything else and only work while you are in your room with the card in the main switch. So they will turn off during the day. A little annoying if you want to keep anything cold.

Tip: don't miss the Wenshu Monastery next door. Only needs an hour or so but do it on your last day. Chendgu is hectic and nuts, so it makes for a good break and unwind away from the chaos. Or take a book and relax in the gardens for a whole day!

Room Tip: Don't miss the Chengdu Wenshu Monastery next door, out the main hotel gate and turn right. If...

The property is pretty impressive! Massive courtyard with several buildings, rooms are stunning, all decorated in chinese style. Very comfortable and we were lucky to get a quiet room facing the courtyard.
Cleanliness was average though, our shower drain was totally blocked and found a fly in the tea bag box. Other than that the bedsheets were crispy clean and bed very comfortable with clean towels and bathrobes.
Reception manager was the only one speaking English and was very helpful and pro-active. Let us use his own PC and provided us with all info needed.
Breakfast was delicious, but we were disappointed, that there was no coffee available!!! We opted for a good chinese tea instead, which made up for it. Helpfulness of staff in the restaurant was average with no English spoken.
Big disappointment was the hotel spa. Beautiful facilities, nice treatment brochure, but no staff and products available for the treatment we chose. We booked this hotel as we wanted to spend a last night in a lovely hotel and relax in spa before our departure back home. Even though we were willing to pay for the overpriced treatments offered, they were simply not available. We ended up going for very reasonably priced 90 mins chinese massage and foot reflexology to Buddhazen hotel just 3 minutes away.

Room Tip: Ask for the room facing the courtyard, however I believe there are very few.
