“A variable quality of room and some issues with the front desk”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2013

We stayed at the Wenjun Mansion hotel for 4 nights from the 29th of september to the 3rd of October.

We are on a month long trip around China and this was our third stop. In the previous two cities Beijing and Xian we had stayed in hostels but as we struggled to find one for chengdu we decided to pay a bit more and go to a hotel.

On arriving the hotel is easy to get to from the train station (north) with only one change on the metro. The hotel itself is in a very nice tourist street with two parks close by which is exellent for taking a stroll to unwind away from the crowds.

On first appearence the hotel looked a little run down but has a nice layout with the internal courtyard. When we checked in we where told that the room we had booked online did not have a toilet or shower but that we could pay to "upgrade" to a room with these facilities. Having come from Xian on the overnight train we decided just to pay the money and sort out the confusion later with the company we booked online through as the room description didnt match.

We where shown to room 209 which overlooks the internal courtyard it was a little run down but clean and spacious. We raised a query with the online travel company and they agreed to refund the extra money we had paid after they spoke to the hotel as the issue appeared to be a mix up between them. At this point we were very happy with the room and with the service.

The next day we tried to arrange the hotels advertised trip to see the pandas but were told it was not running due to the national day holidays, which is fair enough most of china is on holiday. They did say that we could get a a taxi or try to find another tour, we tried to find another tour from a nearby hotel but couldnt. When we went back to recieption and asked if they could book a taxi for the following morning they said they couldnt and that we would have to flag one down. We wanted to go to the panda research base first thing in the morning so this was not practical, no further help was on offer from the hotel. We eventually after some searching online found a service bus that ran to the panda base from outside the bus station near the traffic inn, we got the metro down to the nearest stop and walked down and got to see the pandas as they were being fed and before most of the crowds arrived. plus saved ourselves some money.

We were moved to a smaller room for the second two nights of our stay this was explained to us when we checked in. This room was 305 it was next to the stairs away from the courtyard. It did not appear to have been used recently as the tap to refil the toilet was turned off and the room had a strange odor. The room was very run down with alot of squashed insects on the walls and celling. That night we found out why all about the insects, as the window did not close properly due to a cable from the tv running out of it mosquitos entered the room at night. We were work up by buzzing and after a bit of slap stick comedy trying to get dressed find a sandle and work out where the things were we managed to kill them. We then disconnected the tv and put the cable outside the window allowing us to force it closed. This is the only time we have put up our mosquito nets in china.

If your offered a room ending 05 have a look first but from our two room experience the rooms overlooking the courtyard are far better.

On our last night we went down to reception as we where checking out at 7am the next morning to catch the train to Chongqing and after the checkin issues we didnt want any issues. We were assured everything would be fine.

We handed the key back at reception and they checked our room, this was all fine. We were then told that we had not paid enough to cover the cost of our room for the four nights. We explained about the issue when checking in and that we had paid online i presented a second copy of the booking voucher as he didnt appear to have it. We also said that we had paid an additional fee to the hotel onto of this for an "upgrade" thought this had been refunded by the online company. Again he said that including our CNY200 deposit we were CNY56 short. We made it clear this was not the case that we had paid in full what was asked of us when we checked in. The manager was called at this point and after a telephone call we were asked if we could wat till later in the day to check out as they needed to sort this out and didnt understand what was happening. We said that we needed to catch the train and again presented the booking voucher and reciept for the additional payment made on checkin. This went on for about 30 minutes when eventually we where given the CNY200 deposit back and left. I felt a bit sorry for the guy on the desk, one my chinese isnt great, two he was probably finishing a nightshift and three there didnt appear to have been anythig written down by the people who checked us in. From what he was looking at it didnt add up and there was nothing to explain otherwise however that is a fault for the hotel and certainly left a very negative impression on our departure.

Overall the place is ok if your used to hostels and budget hotels, if you get a room overlooking the courtyard and are fine. The location is good near the metro and two parks however be wary of the quality of some of the rooms particualrly the 305 and if you do have problems on checkin get it written out somewhere preferably in chinese so that you can explain it again on checking out.

Room Tip: ask for one overlooking the courtyard and avoid 305

Wenjun Mansion hotel is a beautiful hotel, with a friendly staff. Some of them speak enough english to help you find your way in Chengdu. The rooms are nicely decorated. The airco a bit noisy. You can sit outside your room, drink a beer and watch the stars or the rain. Grab a cab outside the hotel. For a few Yuan (8 yuan for the first two kilometers, 2 for the next) you cross the entire city. We certainly will be back on our next trip to Chendu.

I am coming to the end of an 8 day stay at this hotel. Longer than planned , but unable to get to Jiuzhaigou, due to recent landslides., so decided to stay longer before heading to Dunhuang.
Absolutely no complaints- all good. The hotel location is convenient to most things I wanted to visit. The hotel can make tour bookings if required. The Sichuan Opera is a 'must see' , and is within walking distance of the hotel.
Rooms clean ,Wi Fi good, reasonable range of dishes available at the hotel , and best of all - very helpful and friendly staff.
In my opinion , if you choose to complain about this place , in it's price range, then you are just too hard to please. Suggest you go pay more money elsewhere.

Room Tip: Higher floors are better- less A/C noise , despite the stairs - no lifts.

Perfectly acceptable and adequate hotel with helpful staff. the rooms are odd ....but clean. It's ariy as all open motel style but felt very secure with a guard on the entrance at all times. The breakfas was the best we had in China for trhe whole trip.

Trying very hard - considering the rest of our experiences I would definitely reccomend this hotel

A lovely low price hotel in a lovely street. We had an unpleasant experience our first night though. We heard some scratch noises during the night but could not see anything because the power was out. The next morning we discovered that a big rat had dug its way through the edge of our window and gotten into our room. The staff said they would fix it but we asked for a new room witch they gave us. Still we had to pay for the night. I know it is not their fault but they should have offered us some compensation. The guy who cleans the floors is spitting in a loud way all the time. I lost my appetite when this occurred several times during breakfast from only one meter away.

We stayed at wejun mansion for 3 nights and initially loved the look of the place and its location. We had two chinese style rooms after some confusion on our reservation. After the initial charm we realised though that this was too basic with shower water running directly through the bathroom and a look at all the wiring when it rained very hard. Although staff was friendly and the embedded little restaurant was good, we won't return.

10、 We had a Chinese-style suite and was surprised by the HUGE double jacuzzi in the HUGE bathroom. Room was clean and service prompt.
The hotel is also very conveniently located, within 10-min walking distance to Kuan Zhai lanes, Du Fu cottage and Qing Yang temple. It's next to a river canal, also a short taxi ride away (but hailing a cab is not easy in Chengdu!) to city center. Reasonably comfortable. Rooms and beds were clean. No more than you would expect for a three star hotel. Staff were very friendly and most spoke some english. Were very helpful on the phone with airport transport issues. Breakfast looked very average.

Room Tip: Higher floors have less A/C unit nois
