We had high expectations of this hotel after reading such great reviews. The hotel corridoor was dark (less lighting, dark wood panels on the sides and dark carpets). Had really hard time with the language problem and room service. What was sweet was that they came to the room to take our order two times,as we couldn't understand each other. But the food was terrible. The breakfast was not so impressive either. The breakfast room didnot smell good . They closed both their restaurants one whole day because of the weddings. The only place open was the buffet one that whole day! The one positive thing was the size of the rooms-they were pretty big!
We were disappointed with our stay here.

Overall, really happy with this hotel. We decided to splurge a bit, since we were only in Datong for 2 days.The service was excellent, and staff were really helpful.

Would recommend checking out the buffets on level 28 for meals, we had a breakfast and lunch there and found there was an excellent selection of Western and Chinese food. There is also a Korean & Japanese restaurant but we didn't sample this.

We also tried room service for dinner - someone will come and take your order for you if you don't speak any Mandarin, so be prepared.

The only real disappointment for us was the room service breakfast. We were given 1 door menu and so my partner and I put our orders, listing x 1 or x 2 for menu items. This was strangely interpreted and we ended up with double of some things, while others were missing.
The milk was hot, they had combined 3 types of cereal in 1 bowl although we had requested the same type, and we only received 1 plate of bacon and eggs between us, instead of one each. The biggest disappointment was that 'toast' turned out to be cold French toast cut into little triangles - completely useless.

So my suggestion would be to make the effort and go upstairs for the buffet - you can make your own toast and pick what you want - either that or request a menu for each person in the room, as they don't seem to cope with multiples on the same menu.

Would definately stay there again though, and recommend to others...

We stayed for two nights while seeing the sites. Was impressed with beds and service. We were well looked after. Staff were very helpful when I had to use business centre to scan and email documents. They found a good english speaking staff member, who has just started and went out of his way to help. Good location - we walked to the city wall that is being rescontructed, will be good when finished. Not too much around the area, but good base to see attractions with a tour guide. Stayed 3 nts here because it is an American brand....an American brand, in China, which unfortunately cancels that out.Their motos is 'You're expectations are exceeded' Unfortunately they were not.

We stayed in a club room. Club Benefits: There are none. There is no club lounge. After reading their web site, and I copy and paste this direct from their website: "Howard Johnson Club guests enjoy additional benefits, including complimentary access to the Howard Johnson Club Lounge." After reading the blurb in the rooms stating that we get complimentary drinks and snacks and after following the directions to the club lounge which was advertised in the elevators, we found the club lounge was actually now a function room. There has been no Club lounge since last October and we get no drinks nor snacks. We were told (after 3 attemts) we could get drinks in the lobby lounge instead. We ordered and were told we had to pay. After complaining to a managerial type bloke we managed to get our orange juice, coke and fries for free. (3 days worth???!)

Room: If you still want to pay for a 'club' room, they are located on 25-27 floor, so there are good views (when the smog/dust allows it)However, avoid staying on 27th floor which is located directly under the restaurants on the 28th floor as all you can hear is the scraping of chairs and stiletto clad footsteps. The room was comfortable and roomy with a very nice bathroom. We asked for a no smoking room and even though there was an ashtray in the room, it didn't smell of smoke. (A first in China!) The room temperature however was a constant 27 degrees celcius which was far too hot and we complained 3 times. People did come to our room but no English meant that they could walk away without doing anything. There are 4 English channels available on the T.V and unfortunately, the one we were watching mysteriously went off and we couldn't view it again. We asked for maintenance to come and look, which they did. Again, no English so it was, 'wait for moment' and they went. Two hours later, still nothing was done.

Food: Panorama Restaurant was advertised as a Brazilian Barbeque. It was Chinese. No E-cafe selling western and asian cuisine as advertised. No sushi at the Japanese(!!!!) Same food in the evening was on the buffet was on for breakfast. Went to the spa but there was no menu in English and my chinese was not good enough to try and understand the staff there. Did not try the pool - you need a swimming hat to go in which they fail to mention on their website. The Chinese people smoke everywhere in the hotel - elevators (even though there is a non-smoking sign) and in the non-smoking section of the restaurant! Staff don't seem to bother.

Location: Was good - just outside the city walls but you could walk to the main city attractions (temples) if wanted or it was about 12RMB in a taxi. Due to our disappointment with the food in the hotel, we ate locally. The hotpot place right across the road from the hotel, and if you walk right out of the hotel and first right, there are a bank of chinese restuarants down there. No English, so be prepared before you go by writing down your favourite dishes in chinese before you go, or play charads and pictionary like we did!

Would we stay again? Probably not. I would stay within the city walls, and pay less money for probably better service in an equally typcial chinese hotel.

We travelled as a family of 4 and stayed at this hotel whilst visiting the Yungang Grottoes and the Hanging Temple in Hunyuan County.
As it was off season, and we arrived late in the evening, the hotel was very quiet and check in was a breeze with our guide. Unfortunately once our guide left us, communication became extremely difficult as most of the staff could not speak English. However, whilst communication was difficult, the staff were extremely helpful trying to answer our questions and even when we gave up ordering room service, the reception staff came up to our rooms with a menu to help us order which was most appreciated. This was not requested and I was most impressed by the initiative taken by the various staff to help us order our meals. Perhaps they were short staffed; unfortunately our meals took close to 2 hours before our room service order was totally filled. It was nice but after waiting for close to 2 hours somehow your appetite becomes quite suppressed when you are tired and it was close to 1.30am before our order was finally delivered.
The room was comfortable and well appointed. Unfortunately the carpet was soiled which gave the impression that cleanliness was not ideal. Perhaps they should not use light coloured carpets in their rooms.
The buffet breakfast was rather ordinary with mostly Chinese breakfast dishes. The biggest detraction for us was the fact that the guests did not seem to observe “no smoking” signs and smoked as they wished in nearly all the public areas including the lifts which was most annoying.
As the restaurant close very early 8.45 pm we had to order room service again however this time it only took 30 minutes before food arrived!
Overall an average stay but I was told that its the best in Datong.

Room Tip: Go early for dinner!

Stayed there 1 night. Nice,well equipment room, comfy beds and great bathroom. Everything looked new and clean. Breakfast buffet full of Chinese dishes but western food very limited.
Chinese tourists staying in this hotel smoke everywhere including elevators.City itself horrible, look like they rebuilding every square in it. On the other hand, Yungang Grottoes and Hanging Monastery are definitely worth the trip. Two amazing sides.
