This is my second visit to this hotel and the longer stay this time has uncovered a range of annoyances which you just should be exposed to in a hotel trying to be classy.

The location is about as good as you can get in Huangdao, without actually being in Qingdao proper (almost an hour away by ferry or car, even longer on the bus). A few years ago the hotel might have had a nice waterfront view, but this has been all but blocked by various apartment blocks and in a few years you won't even get glimpses of the coast - not that you are missing much since the coast next to the city is nothing special.

The rooms are spacious but dated. The beds are rock hard (compressible region is about 3cm thick) and the range of english channels on TV is CNN, BBC and AXN - not even HBO this time around - although I think that is the sattelite service provider's fault. The biggest problem's with the rooms, and indeed the hotel, are the exceptionally poor airconditioning and the noise from outside. Even though it's not even into summer yet, temperatures in this region are hitting 30deg and the rooms become like ovens. The hotel has been asked 3 times what the problem is and has given 3 different answers from "we are changing the filters, it will be on in 2 days" to "I don't know, I will look into it for you" to "the government has to provide the code to turn the system on and they probably will not do it for 4 weeks". The road noise is not really the hotel's fault - but rather the annoying habit of the locals to use their horns to communicate - even at 5am in the morning. You can take a room facing the other way for slightly quieter experience but they receive the afternoon sun making the hot room even more unbearable in the evenings.

The other hotel amenities are basic. You have free access to the gym next door which is somewhat antequated - think late 70's american style bodybuilding gym and you'll get the idea. If you're over 6 foot and want an excersize bike that goes high enough you're out of luck (even in the spin class), and it also lacks air con - but other than that it's reasonable. The hotel has several restraunts of average quality, with the main seafood restraunt downstairs sometimes stinking up the lift area with a fishy scent. The breakfast at the "western" restraunt is OK and the coffee is surprisingly good. The biggest downfall at breakfast is the lack of designated smoking area, meaning you may find yourself having to walk through a wall of someone else's smoke to reach the buffet - yum!

This hotel does the job for short stays, but anything longer and you will be praying for a pad of your own.

I like staying at the Harvest Hotel. I have been here for about 1 month for a business trip. This hotel has the best staff and they will get you anything you wish. Some rooms are much better than others. The executive suites are the best with flat screens and nice bathrooms. If you are missing anything in the rooms, the staff will work very hard to provide it. Some rooms have kitchens...just ask for any kitchen appliance and they will provide it. Some rooms also have washing machines. The hotel has a nice gym that is free to all hotel guest...just go outside the front door and it is located on the side of the hotel on the 4th floor. Each room has fresh fruits, free bottled water, and cable TV. The beer at the bar is very cold and delicious. Breakfast is from 6am to 10am and the best is on the 4th floor. The 2nd floor has three restaurants to choose from Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. Checking in is very easy and people speak English very well. Nearby is a Jusco shopping mall with grocery store, clothing store, electronics, food court, KFC, Pizza Hut, and many other famous foods. There is movie threatre nearby. The bus stop is nearby and for minimum $1 RMB you can ride to many places...upto $3 RMB. Just hop on the bus, take a seat and someone will come by to sell tickets...get the red ticket for $1 RMB. Or you can take a private scooter for $4 RMB. Most taxis are $7 RMB minimum. If you are here during the summer, the street vender sell the best fried squid for $3 or $5 RMB depending if you want small or large!

General

Of the 3 hotels close by (Harvest / Haidu / Marina Gold) the Harvest Hotel comes in tops.

The location is good being close by the shops / eateries and the rooms / facilities are what you would expect of a hotel "past its prime".

Staff are all friendly and more than happy to test their English out.

Lobby bar lacks atmosphere but is fine for a cold beer after a long day. There are a few bars worth visiting close by the hotel in any case which serve good cold beer at a fair price. Only a short stagger back to the hotel as well.

Rooms

Standard rooms are a bit shabby with heavy wear on carpets due to service engineers attending the nearby shipyard. Sadly they seem to be unable to change into clean gear after work and traipse in and out in boilersuits and boots.

Executive rooms are a better bet being cleaner and larger and toilet facilities generally fine. Free standing baths in the bedroom tend to be a bit disconcerting initially.

Restaurants

Good asian variety (local / korean / japanese)
Western food so-so.
Beware the stampeding service engineers at the breakfast buffet.

First things first. This hotel is actually now called the Harvest Hotel. TA needs to update it's listings a little.

The hotel is actually in the Huangdao area of the city which is almost an hour away from Qingdao by driving and a healthy ferry ride away. basically it is a seperate city. I stayed here for three nights during a business trip to Huangdao this past August.

Check-In/Check-Out:

Check-In was quick, room was ready at noon when I arrived and I was in the room 5 minutes after arriving at the hotel. Check-Out was a little comical as I left at 5:30am and when I came down everyone was asleep in the lobby, (6 people). Because of the groggy state of the girl checking me out I think it took longer than it should have but it was worth the laugh.

Rooms:

I can only imagine what has gone on in some of these rooms back 10 or 15 years ago. It was obviously the classy hotel of the area but now has some years on it. Despite the age and the 70's colour scheme the room was surprisingly clean and the bathroom in good shape and somewhat modern. The bed was very typically chinese, essentially a concrete slab covered with linen. The wide collection of "love items" for purchase next to the bed was a clear indication of what many of the clientelle use this hotel for now. Although there was plenty of noise, the air conditioners weren't working on most floors while I was there.

Food:

I had a club sandwich from room service the first afternoon that was surprisingly decent but that was the only meal I had. I was told the breakfast was passable but the heat of the breakfast room was nearly unbearable.

Service:

Most of the staff were helpful and smiling or laughing whenever you talked with them, (the sleepy-heads being the exception), and everyone I dealt with could speak some english. Definitely a good group of staff.

Overall:

This is obviously the "one" place to stay if you're in Huangdao for business and provides a few laughs. It may sound like a horror, but it's clean and safe so it's not all bad.
