We booked two nights in the Shangri-La Qingdao and negotiated a rate in the Valley Wing. What a good move. The Wing is new and for Executive rooms only - the standard rooms are in the City Wing which is the original hotel. And it looks it.

The executive rooms are huge, with an incredible bed, electric curtains, large flat-screen TV and free wireless internet. The bathroom is huge also, and there's even a TV in the mirror in the bathroom, so you can watch CNN and clean your teeth at the same time.

Service in the Valley Wing lounge on the 20th floor could not be faulted, although a little bit slow. Free-flow Moet champagne however helped and the happy hour from 1730 to 1930 was an evening meal by itself.

Rooms have a view of the sea and it's not a long walk to the seashore path. They are building the Qingdao Metro outside the hotel, and this might get annoying later, but just now there's no noise or disruption to the hotel. Overall, a very very good hotel indeed.

This Shangri-La is at the "new" city center in Qingdao. It's near 5-4 square but not much else in tourist terms. It's probably a great business location. There are two buildings -- the Vally Wing and the City Wing. At this time (May 1, 2011), the lobby of the City Wing is under renovation and the city subway construction is right at the front of the hotel. It will probably be that way for a couple of more years. Shangri-La is well known for its service and this one is no exception. Service is excellent. Breakfast buffet is excellent. However, the room we got, which was "upgraded" to be a corner room, in the city wing, is dated and worn. The carpet is worn and the hall way smelled bad. This is highly unusual for Shangri-La because they usually pride themselves in smell as well as visual. There is nothing major wrong but the room is just dated. There are stains on the desk/table from a hot cup. The vally wing, I heard is much newer and it looked like it from the outside. They offered it to me for 60% more.... I turned it down.
Internet is wired only... no wireless which is really no longer acceptable in this day and age.

Room Tip: If you can, get the Vally tower room.

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay with us. We are glad to hear that you enjoyed our signature Shangri-La hospitality and service!

We are also glad to inform you that our City Wing lobby will be re-opening this month and do hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back soon to see it. We are all excited about the improvements and know that you will enjoy the more refined and attractive lobby.

Regarding the wired internet in the rooms, this will also be updated in the coming months, at which time the entire hotel will offer free wi-fi access. Currently, wi-fi is available in all public areas and the Valley Wing.

Once again, I thank you for your feedback, as it is through your comments that we can learn and improve.

If I can be of any further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me at gary.biondo@shangri-la.com

Best Regards,

Gary Biondo, General Manager

I have been already several times in Shangri-La in Qingdao and always I come back here with pleasure. Especially the service level could be the top standard for all other high class hotels.
I had the room in the old wing of the hotel, and although the arrangement of the room seems to be slightly old fashioned, the room meets all the requirements and is very friendly and functional. For the breakfast, please reserve minimum 30- 40 minutes, as the styles of cuisines and choice of dishes are unbelievable.
Practically, during my stay, nothing to complain.
