We thought we'd give this unique place a try - based on it's mainly favourable reviews, a sense of adventure, and my limited Chinese. Not that no-one spoke a word of English here - far from it, but come on.. this is not the Shangri-la, nor the Intercontinental and it's certainly not pretending to be. If you're looking for 5 star, stay at a 5 star. If you're looking for a unique slice of Qingdao, then stop here. If you're not sure, book a night at the 5 star place you just read about, but have dinner here (the big circular room is an amazingly good restaurant) - when you've eaten more dumplings than you've ever had before, browse the art through out the 5 floors, and ask to see the best two hotel rooms that are free (they're all a bit different). What this hotel achieves cannot be matched by any of the chain hotels - it's ambition is based on art and culture, not popularity and frequent traveller stamps. You won't get cookies and a weather report on your pillow at night - hey, you won't get a fridge in your room unless you ask for one! But you will get a sense that you've just woken up in one of the most delightful places you've ever stayed, and that whoever designed your room really put a lot of thought and care into every detail.
