“Into China”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2012

I had the good fortune to stay at the Shangri La Hotel Dalian, China last week. I stayed on the Club Floor and found this to meet the Shangri La standards in all boxes. The food was superb, the staff courteous and the airport service second to none. If you are lucky enough to get the chance, make this hotel your stop in Dalian.

Stayed at this hotel for 5 nights and must say that the service is good. I was quite impressed that my comments previous stay on my request was taken into consideration and was met upon my check-in this time!

Stayed in Shangri La hotel in Dalian from Aug 27 for one night. Took the hotel transport pickup at airport on arrival. Excellent service, prompt and efficient. Checkin was ok, smooth and fast. Room was clean, comfortable. Typical Shangri La standards.

Had lunch at the cafe buffer. Good spread and quality. Used the business center meeting room to conduct meetings for one day. Good service. No issues. Used the indoor pool, functional and clean. Had dinner at the japanese rest. Good service but food was 100% as expected from a typical Shangri La but it was a good attempt anyway.

Took the hotel transport to airport and again excellent service. Hotel to airport without traffic was less than 15 mins, but with traffic can be 40 mins.

Overall, good and comfortable stay.

Outstanding hotel amenities, like all Shangri La's. However, ...
Concierge was unable to locate any type of English guide or translator for both tours inside city, or for outside the city. The concierge sent me to Travel Desk within the hotel, their help was even less. They had no English speaking, and had zero brochures in English. They sent me back to the Concierge desk. I was able to locate 2 guides by surfing the web, After a bit of hunting. It took 24-48 hrs for these tour guides to respond positively to my desire for a guide. However, it was time for me to leave, so pretty much resorted to traveling on my own... Point here is, you expect the #1 hotel in the city,to have #1ability for their guests to have tour guide support that is available from the Internet... Also, should not the Travel Desk be supported with at least one English speaking agent, and maybe just one English brochure, or just one map with English??

Had lots of time to use the exercise room, the spa, the pool, steam room, sauna.. They were superb...

Room Tip: Upgrade to Horizon Lounge. Well worth the additional 300Y per day. Breakfast that costs 170Y is...

The Good
- Despite some reviews the service here is the best in Dalian in my opinion and I have stayed at most of the similar choice hotels in the area. Standards of spoken English are generally higher than I've found elsewhere too
- Whilst the hotel is aging they have recently updated the lobby and some of the conference areas. The rooms are not the newest but do feel comfortable and homely
- Excellent breakfast buffet in the main restaurant and a decent option on the exec floor

The Bad
- it is getting old (a new Shang is being build behind it now), and the rooms in particular are not to the standard of the much newer Intercon or Hilton nearby
- Downstairs bar is dead, go elsewhere for a decent drink

In Summary
It remains my first choice in Dalian on service and the breakfast buffet, but other new international hotels are offering close options by the standards of their room facilities

Have stayed at the Shangri-La in Dalian several times, the most recent being in May, 2012. If you are a frequent guest of other Shangri-La properties you will likely find this one almost to the standards of those in the larger cities. It is still a very nice hotel with clean, reasonably sized rooms. The staff is generally helpful and accommodating. The breakfast is good with multiple selections of both Western and local fare. As compared to other hotels in Dalian, i believe this is one of the best hotels available.

With that typical Shangrila aroma as soon as you enter, your mind starts to think of the same level of service whether be it Shanghai, Beijing, Manila or Hongkong. Suddenly the expectations go higher and you are greeted by a lady at the door . Smaller Lobby though, it does not fail to meet your expectations of Shangrila hospitality. Right from the time of the check in till you dropping of your room key at the reception desk, its a pleasurable journey.

I tried the breakfast buffet at the Coffee shop and it was reasonable if not great. Typical chinese style preparations and some variety of western style breakfast like cereals, croissants, hard and sift dough breads with marmalade and of course sausages. Do not expect Bacon strips , hash browns or sorts, rather expect Fried rice , congee and chinese style pancakes ( Not sure what to call them ) . Regular coffee, tea and juices are definitely there.

Coming down to the restaurants, there are three if I am not wrong. The Chinese restaurant is really chinese and dont expect American Chinese or Indian Chinese or any other regional chinese delicacies. Chinese means Chinese. Sea cucumber,Seaweed, Chicken Feet, Octopus etc etc. There is also a Japanese restaurant onsite which I did not try but I did not see many tables occupied in either of these restaurants. Coffee shop seemed busy for lunch . I think the Lunch buffet is RMB 238 ++.

The Hotel is very conviniently located on Renmin road with LV, Prada , Armani and the sorts having their retail outlets rubbing shoulders with the property. Renmin road is like the Main Heavy Duty Expensive Hotels and boutiques road with some upmarket restaurants etc.

Dalian, otherwise is not a very glamorous city ( I did not say big ). It is fair in size and really gets very very cold if you go in Winter Months. As of writing this review which is 3 days old, I experienced around 5 degrees Celsius at night which felt like 1degree with the wind chill factor. And this April end!!! .Summers are warm an the temp may reach about 30 degrees celcius tops. Overall Not very warm at anytime of the year but pleasant may be if not very cold.

Overall a small city compared to Beijing or Shanghai but has everything you need for your business trip. Not sure if people would visit Dalian as their tourist spot after Shanghai!
