“Great hotel, Great location but lack of effective a/c in hottest season and lack of English speaking staff an issue”
Reviewed August 20, 2011

Shangri-la Suzhou lives up to it's reputation for being a better hotel with great complimentary breakfast buffet (great wide selection and best kids area), beautiful interiors, great rooms that are kept very clean daily and a staff that wants to be very attentive BUT issue was July is one of the hottest times of the year and the a/c was NOT effective (we did get a standing fan from hotel which made all the difference so ask for one) and the staff (front desk and restaurant) did not speak English very well at all. We w/stay again just be aware of above. If they could we always felt they w/do whatever they could to make our stay successful.

This has all the amenities of a five star hotel, and the comfort to be expected from a Shangri-La. However, it is not well located for visiting the fragments of historic Suzhou that still remain (eg the two great gardens, the Humble Administrator's Garden and the Lingering Garden). The food in the main restaurant is disappointing - just average, and not up to the standard of dining in most major city hotels. The general decor of the hotel is vapid, and there is a sense of emptiness about the foyer and public areas. Design in the bedrooms is lavish in parts but also thoughtless: in our "honeymoon suite" the hairdryer was wired in to the study area, and not close to any mirror. Homesick Brits may find it a novelty to encounter a supersized Tesco only a short walk away.

Room Tip: Higher rooms have good views.

Shangri-La hotel is an elegant business hotel with all amenities.
It is situated in the heart of Suzhou & city center is quite near.
The break-fast is having wide variety .Most of the business travellers perfer this hotel if they stay in Suzhou. Definitely to visit at least once.

My wife and I went for a Saturday night, in order to spend most of the weekend in Suzhou for our anniversary. Unfortunately the information about it being our wedding anniversary that I provided to Ctrip did not make it to the hotel, but once I told them they made sure to make our stay a memorable one. A guy in the Horizon Club named Peter Hao was particularly helpful and an all around nice fellow.

The hotel itself is of course really nice, we stayed in a very comfortable room and were impressed by the fantastic service from the staff. The only problem we had was the food. We ordered from the room service menu twice and our food was average at best both times. The breakfast selection was good, but again the food wasn't amazing. That is definitely the only bad thing I can say about the place though, so I'd recommend staying there and maybe eating at one of the amazing gardens in Suzhou!

At check in, they were out of standard non smoking rooms so I was upgraded to a non smoking suite. It was a pity I only was able to stay one night.

Bed was comfortable. Wireless internet. Flat screen television in the bedroom area. Standard television in the living room portion of the room. Very limited number of electrical outlets were available for use.

Since I arrived late in the evening and had to depart very early the following day, I was unable to explore the area around the hotel.

Breakfast Buffet – Large with a nice selection of food choices.

Sorry about the poor quality of the photos. Just took a few quick snap shots and did not play with settings.

We stayed in a family suite. Very comfortable and clean. The staff go out of their way to help and make you feel welcome. One night we ordered pizza from the cafe and found a very tiny ant on one of the pieces of pizza. I don't think bugs in the food is a normal there. We ate breakfast there every morning and didn't have any issues with bugs. Three managers came up to the room apologizing over and over, asked what they could do to make it right. A great experience.

I stayed here for over a week running a course on site for 30+ colleagues. I've stayed at many like it - this is very good, particularly fitness center and food.

The pool and fitness centre are ideal, but the changing rooms are the standout feature, massive jacuzzis, steam room, sauna and relaxation space... Rooms are fine mid-5 star level, very comfortable, DVD players as always (and a neighbourhood DVD shop just round the corner from the hotel:,Go past the external entrance to the hotel's Club Red and then turn right into the street with the big neon sign, 50-100m in). Food in the main restaurant is high quality and 3-4 cuisines nightly (Indian, Chinese, Singapore/KL, Western) so not easy to get bored. Conference facilities are very good and hotel could not do enough to help us (eg arranging trips). They struggled a bit with dietary requirements for Indian colleagues over the week outside of evening meals (where Indian food was great), and I kind of liked it that the hotel was still Chinese enough to find deliberately limiting your diet very confusing. There's a very good Japanese in the hotel too if you fancy a bento lunch.

Night: Club Red in the hotel is fine (and very amusing) if you are with friends, but generally not hugely atmospheric or designed for more than a few drinks after a day's work. You'll want to get out (but then Suzhou itself was not exactly buzzing after 8pm)

Location - We went out to the new town, the old town, the canals, the Humble A's garden and I didn't worry at all about not being in the center of town - Shanghai has a center, Suzhou has a collection of them... I would rather have had the Shangri La as a retreat. The Chinese colleagues with us also thought this one of the best places to stay in town.
