Owner description: A Brief Description of the Lingering Garden      Located at the outer side of the Chang Gate and built in the 21st year of the reign of Wanli under the Ming Dynasty (AD 1593), the Lingering Garden is reputed to be one of the four most famous gardens of China. In 1961 it was listed from the very first as cultural relics of national importance. Since 1997 it has been inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage List.      The Lingering Garden, covering 23,310 sq.m., is divided into the middle, eastern, western and northern parts. The middle part features fascinating landscapes and waterscapes. The eastern part is noted for its architectural beauties and limestone rockeries. The northern part is famed for its beautiful bonsai garden. And the western part boasts the mountain forest scenery and the delights of wilderness. Celebrated for its superb handling of architectural space and spatial relations, the Lingering Garden serves as a fine specimen of ancient Chinese garden and landscape design and reputably tops all the well-known gardens in Suzhou. The Lingering Garden provides English tour guide for free every hour since 2017. You can also choose to pay for a professional English guide with different guiding route or a guiding machine. Hope that during your short stay here, you can not only satisfy your eyes, but also experience the real Chinese culture and have a better understanding of our philosophy.

“The Picture of Serenity”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 5, 2014

I think the only thing that could have made this visit any better would be if we visited during the spring or summer months when flowers would be in bloom. This garden is aptly named, as it is a seemingly lovely place to linger over a cup of tea or with a sketchbook.

As we visited towards the end of the Chinese New Year celebration, crowds were down and we had time to explore and take pictures. Our china.com tour guide Peter Wu took us through all of the different rooms and spaces, explaining in full the use for each one.

All in all, a lovely place well worth taking the time to see.

“Back in time”

I did like getting to know now one of the World Heritage listed by UNESCO. The old-aged trees surrounded by time sculptured rocks is really something!

“Stark in late fall”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2013

I visited in mid November and the fall season was on the wane. There was little color and the most attractive feature was probably the bonzai trees. The garden was large and most likely extremely attractive in the Spring.

“Peaceful Oasis”

Very pleasant series of gardens in Suzhou. The day we were we visited there were performers acting out a traditional boy meets girl type of play…very traditional in costume and music. There was also a young lady and young man singing and playing traditional songs in period costume. Very enjoyable and interesting.

“Beautiful Sanctuary in a City”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013

As part of our tour, this stop to the Lingering Gardens was fantastic. Our escort let us go and roam around once he gave us the basic history of the gardens. It's a beautiful, tranquil place with plenty of places to sit, relax and take pictures. Our group moved forward and we snuck out. Here's the problem; it was kind of a maze to leave and we circled back a few times so we retraced our steps and went out the way we came in. We wanted to walk the two streets out front. Our group enjoyed tea in the garden. We spent 20 or so minutes getting some photos. Group probably spent an hour then back on the bus.

If you go out the exit, walk up the same side of the street to the end (go right) to the fruit store. Grab some very cheap fresh fruit (helps with scurvy ;). Then carefully cross street to the Garden Bakery. OMG. Try the garlic bread and the soft raisin bread. Grab a tray and tongs and choose away. Continue up opposite side of street and cross back to garden to meet your bus.
