Tongli old town seems as it was in the past, so wonderful!
full of canals and lanes!
really suggestive!

Old town entrance costs RMB100 but it's worthwhile.
After visiting the town we made a little cruise within canals with a traditional boat ( total boat expense RMB90//maximum 6 person).

if you are based in Shanghai I suggest to visit first Tognli and after Suzhou (last bus departing from tongli to SHA at 03.20 p.m.).
We took a bus from SHA to Tongli , then we took another bus to Suzhou (25km//RMB11).
After visiting these nice places we went to SHA by train (RMB40 each).

Review: Tongli

After being quoted extortionate amounts for a non-English speaker driver to Tongli, we decided to do it on our own by public transportation. We were mistakenly taken to the South Coach Station, but were issued tickets for a bus within 15 minutes of buying the tickets. The coach station sells combined coach and Tongli admission tickets. They were 80 CNY each for transportation to Tongli and admission to Tongli (yes, they have entry points and even if you're just wandering around, you need an admission ticket). Return tickets were 8 CNY apiece. The Tongli admission tickets gets you in to all the key sights in Tongli (I think --- we only tried one). The ride is 45 minutes to the North Coach Station and 1 hour from the South Coach Station ; we ended up doing one of each and timed them.

The 25 minute punt ride, at 90 CNY per boat (1-6 people per boat) was a welcome respite from the heat and an opportunity to see things from a different angle. We all thought that was good value.

Our one regret is not having taking the minibus/golf cart or pedicab from the station to the Tongli entrance. It is not too long, but on a hot day and agenda of things to do, the 20 min walk was a bit of waste of time. I don't know how much they cost, but it can't be much. Also, if you're walking, it is not well marked, so you just have to follow the golf cars/pedicabs.

Tongli is interesting, especially if meander off the main tourist streets and go through the back alleys and see real life. We were there for a few (2-3 hours) and returned to Suzhou as we only had one day to do a lot. I think I would probably aim to arrive early in the morning (say 8am) and spend 4-5 hours there ideally. I am not sure there is enough to keep you there a whole day.

I am glad we went to Tongli, and my husband particularly so. It is not as Disneyfied as Venice or Bruges, but it's definitely not untouched either.

After 5 p.m. you can walk into the old town without paying the 100 Yuan admission fee and just stroll around the streets, bridges and canals, then eventually have supper at a canal-side cafe. Slightly overpriced, but very atmospheric.

Spend the night and next morning buy a ticket so you can enter the various gardens and attractions. After having been in Shanghai and Suzhou, it was refreshing to get out of the big-city bustle.

Would have been a huge pity to just come here on a day tour. It's so quiet at night and in the early morning. The air seemed clean and fresh. (There were a few mosquitoes, but not many.)

Lots of small, hip shops for buying souvenirs and women's clothes. Unfortunately I'm a guy, and was traveling alone. A very romantic place, especially in the evening.

We loved staying in Tongli- it is so peaceful, especially in the early morning and evening, when the day visitors are not around. The Pearl Tower gardens were our favourite spot to visit. Wandering through the quiet alleys off the tourist routes was also lovely, as was going on a gondola on the canals. Eating supper on the edge of the water was magical. If you are going to visit Tongli I would recommend staying overnight for at least one night.

Practical tip: We arrived by bus from Suzhou- if you buy the Tongli ticket (which one has to do- RMB100 pp) then you save the bus fare.

It was lovely to see Tongli water town, sort of like a Chinese version of Venice with canals running through and beautiful wooden boats, some complete with cormorants for fishing. It was such a contrast to the craziness of Beijing and Shanghai and gave us a glimpse of how life would have been many years ago. Now of course, there are several cafes set up along the canals and many shops but we still managed to have lunch in a traditional restaurant that was over 100 years old.
