When we entered the restaurant, it looked perfect for a lovely dinner. It can be great to dine in all occasions. Children are allowed. The dress code is Smart casual but it is worth trying at least once. I had Lobster Bisque and Lobster Spaghetti. At the end, try the desert.

I return time and again to Riva for the steak and engaging front of house service. The restaurant is on the 2ond floor of the Intercontinental hotel. Each time I arrive I’m greeted by the hostess with a smile who uses my name. A chilled ceramic pot of crudités arrives to every table with the freshest produce, tomatoes, radish and celery with accompanying honey mustard dipping sauce. The bread plate is a selection of fine pastries that includes a head of roasted garlic and even a ham Panini.

Through repeated visits I’ve come to make my own opinions on the menu items, there are hits and misses as with most restaurants. The shared scallop platter is a hit that comes in a ceramic pot with onions and artichoke. The advertised avocado salad has been ordered many times by myself or colleagues but seems to be all lettuce and very little avocado, the fruit that is there is a let down and is not of the same quality as the starter crudités.
I really wanted to like the pumpkin soup but is usually a big bowl of blandness that screams for salt.

The steak is what you come for and the choice of Angus, Wagyu and Australian beef is the best I’ve seen in Suzhou. Steak courses are preempted by a knife menu. The knives are presented to the table in a wooden box and on at least 2 occasions the server had a story as to the benefits of each knife. I found this service very endearing and look forward to it on each visit. The steaks were cooked to the desired temperature each time. The accompanying sides are to share. Mashed potatoes are very starchy but redeemed by the creamed spinach.

The wine list is a little confusing as leads the reader through wines by their flavor (Light red, robust full bodied etc) and I found myself having to re-read through the list a few times. There is a reason why restaurants usually list their wines by the region or varietal. The restaurant benefits from the hotel’s wine cellar through and has a large number mid range selections (RMB 300 – 700) to accompany the high end selections. Service staff is attentive and always topping our glass.

Desserts are tasty but can be a little strange. The item “Lemon Tart” was asked for to share, and what came to the table was a whole 9” Lemon Meringue Pie. Great when put in a box to go.

The service can not be understated. It’s efficient and very intuitive. Once you discover your favorites on the menu, you will want to return. Try to reserve one of the 3 banquettes by the window for privacy.

Great decor and embience with open kitchen concept, this restaurant won't disappoint anyone who wants a piece of great meat. I like the garden green that the restaurant offers that includes small radish, carrot and celery. The service there is also great!
