Modena Jinjihu Suzhou
Ranked #46 of 1,478 Hotels in Suzhou
Reviewed April 15, 2013

You have to decide up front if you want to be right in the middle of the "action," namely the downtown tourist zone, or not. If you are a short-term tourist and that's important to you, this hotel is not your best choice. There aren't any interesting shops or restaurants within walking distance here. That's not really a drawback if you plan ahead, but is something you need to know. You can't pop out at eight o'clock on the spur of the moment for a snack.

I stayed here two nights and liked it very much. Good facilities and helpful, friendly staff. It was not difficult to navigate the metro to go into the tourist zone for sightseeing or to Times Square for supper in the evening. Efficient and inexpensive (2 Yuan to Times Square; 3 Yuan to Lin Dun Lu.) You can take a short (10 to 15 Yuan) taxi ride from that latter stop to reach the major gardens and the museum.

One day I rode two different city busses from nearby stops just to see what else might be nearby. But they wound through the industrial park for a long way without reaching any shopping centers or malls. This industrial zone is huge. It's possible that a better choice of busses would take you someplace useful; my experiment was not carefully planned. I decided it was easier to stick with the metro.

Had trouble with the air conditioner on day one, but the maintenance man came promptly and fixed it. Excellent breakfast, included in the rate. Easy to use internet. I would definitely stay here again. Feels like home, only better.

Metro signs are Chinese plus English, but the Chinese writing is larger and more prominent. In case you want to try to figure it out, this might help a little.

1. Chinese name of the metro stop across from the hotel is 星湖街站。It serves line one, and that's the only line you are likely to need.
2. The Times Square stop is 时代广场。It is only one stop away from the hotel. Take the metro in towards 木渎。
3. The Lin Dun Lu stop is 临顿路站。It's also in the 木渎 direction.

If you use the Suzhou bus system, stops that are (fairly) near a metro entrance are marked with a red symbol above the name of the stop. With a little effort and some knowledge of Chinese, you can combine to two modes of public transportation and greatly minimize reliance on taxis.

One reason for mastering the metro is that this hotel is difficult for taxi drivers to find. They can do it eventually if you have the hotel name card or a map, but it may take several attempts. Suggest also carrying the hotel's phone number, so that if the driver gets really perplexed he can call the desk for detailed instructions.

Room Tip: High floor is more quiet.

Stayed here recently and thoroughly impressed with the standard of the hotel. On checking in I thought the lobby looked like something out of Space 1999, with lots of white and metallic furniture and doors - that was interesting. Equally 'interesting' was the room deposit (not cheap!), but once in the apartment it is evident why. Apartment was a fully furnished place with decent quality brand name appliances, a good quality German designed kitchen and everything you possibly need to feel comfortable staying here.

Other things in the hotel include a laundry - which is great if you stay a couple of days or more, also the restaurant was not bad although a little small - they had a happy hour going on during our stay. I think the food in the restaurant was OK. It is western anyway.

Would recommend anyone to stay in this hotel if you are visiting Suzhou and despite it being located in an area called Suzhou Industrial Park, the name is deceiving because this is a modern and recently developed place with many amenities for shopping, drinking and eating out. I would recommend a Mexican restaurant in the area that is called Casa Joes - very good place. There is even a theme park, complete with ferris wheel in this area!

Suzhou town iteself is about 15 minutes by taxi from this location.

Room rates for this hotel, in my opinion represent superb value for money.

My son and I stayed at the Modena on a business trip to Suzhou. The positives are that it is clean, comfortable and the staff are very friendly - it is also simple decor away from the over the top kitsch that starts becoming a bit oppressive. The subway is across the road and if you get off at the next stop (Times Square) there is a massive mall with a food hall, international supermarket and heaps of shops. The only negative is that it's a bit out of the action so you need to plan your meals etc. Recommended.

Room Tip: Agree that traffic noise could be an issue so higher up room

Stayed on the 29th floor of this hotel after reading about traffic noise. Room was quiet, clean and beds were soft and comfortable. Great option instead of traditional hotel - kitchen comes in handy even if just for tea. Bathroom was very nice - shower had good water pressure and rain shower head was a bonus. Metro station Xinghu Jie right across road. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Choose a room higher up - we stayed on 29th floor and it was silent.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom suite at the Modena Jinjihu for 2 nights. Really liked the design and layout of the suite, very conducive to hanging out and chatting with friends. :)

Location is all right, it's not particularly close to the standard tourist stops like the historic gardens and such, but on the other hand, there are great shopping and restaurants in the area. When we went, there was a daily shuttle bus to quite a few of the more popular areas, so that was pretty convenient too. Just a word of caution, most taxi drivers don't know the hotel or even where Jiarui lane is. Better to tell them it's near Jinjihu, XingHuJieZhan (the name of the metro station).

With regards to room tips, pick the higher floors as far as possible. Chinese drivers hit the horn at the slightest provocation (even on near empty streets) so there is quite a bit of noise from the streets.

Cosy, comfortable, clean, modern in design and conveniently located serviced apartment ! Room reminds me of apartments in Melbourne.
Less than 15 mins to the train station with the city's subway station just opposite the apartment block. Walking distance to shopping mall with large varieties of eateries, restaurants, cafes, costa coffee, Starbucks. Quiet environment. Value for money!
Ideal for single and couple traveling. They accept short stays too.
I was there for couple of nights and will definitely be back again when visiting the city!

Room Tip: Suite - bedroom plus lounge and kitchenette
