reading all the reviews from this site, we decided to book a room in july, which was quite expensive compared to other same class hotel in hangzhou or shanghai. or maybe i had the bad luck here. the interior of the lobby and garden was indeed beautiful, but my room was not what i expected to get with the price i paid. the carpet was very old and looks dirty and worn out. the bathroom got rusty and very small. related to location indeed very close to some big gardens like lion grove, humble administrative garden, ping jiang road, but when we need to take taxi, one to tongli and going back to train station, it was very difficult. and the hotel staff cannot help us call taxi. so we have to wait at the road side a long time (about 30 min) and even took some walk. it really depend on the coming taxi with passengers coming to pingjiang road or to the hotel. if i return, would for sure look for other hotel option

Found this hotel on the small luxury hotel worldwide list and decided to give it a try given it's not very well-known hotel operator! The experience was excellent from the moment we arrived in hotel! First, perfect location, it's right next to several must-go places, walking distnace so you don't have to suffer the traffic! The service was also outstanding ... we arrived early and the frontdesk staff let us check in early without any issue and give us suggestions as where to go and see. The hotel garden is large for kids to run around, very nicely design! Will return next year in Spring!

If you want to get a feel of Chinese Garden, that's the place you would have it. Staff is friendly and helpful. Walking distand to nearly tourist attractions. There is not enough parking lots, so its a bit messy to see many cars parked in the yard...

The hotel is interesting for the fact that many Suzhou garden details have been incorporated into the hotel design. Supposedly famous and historical "Half Garden" is now part of the hotel restaurant. Location is excellent for the sights. Staff is friendly and helpful. However, the price is on the high side, and I did not get any recognition or upgrade for my SLH membership and status.

We visited Tongli and Suzhou over 2 days, the first night we stayed at Zhengfu Caotang traditional inn in Tongli. The inn was very nice but quite basic and overpriced but I can not speak too highly of Andy who worked there. We left Tongli in the morning and took a taxi to Scholars Hotel to drop our bags before hitting the gardens. From the moment we arrived the service and welcome was exemplary and warm.

To our delight we were upgraded to a suite. Everything was just perfect! Definitely a five star experience. The room and bathroom were very modern but still retained a Chinese style. This is the first time we've stayed in a hotel room with two toilets.

Even if we had kept our original room the outstanding service would still have been the same. The complimentary products provided were of the highest quality. Attention to detail was impressive. The public areas were decorated with beautiful authentic Chinese pieces.

The Breakfast buffet was one of the best we had and the seating area was again surrounded by lovely Chinese furniture and ceramics in a modern setting. Just gorgeous! I can't say enough about this place.

My only regret is that we should have spent 2 nights rather than stay in Tongli.

Room Tip: Of course a suite!

I'm surprised at the negative reviews for this hotel. I had a wonderful stay here. From the moment I walked in the front entrance, the staff was attentive, friendly and helpful (even if their English was sometimes not great--they managed to communicate). The entrance, gardens, lobby, and restaurants were all very clean and lovely. The breakfast buffet was extensive, diverse, and excellent. The location is fantastic--just a two minute walk from the lovely pedestrian canals filled with cool shops and restaurants and interesting people. Now, to be fair, my first room smelled of smoke, but the moment I asked to be switched, I was moved to a lovely, clean, quiet and comfortable room. The furnishings were a lovely blend of traditional Chinese and contemporary. The only other complaint I had was that the bathtub drain didn't quite work and so the shower filled up and would not empty. Since I was leaving shortly I did not see whether they were able to fix this quickly. I ate dinner at the restaurant hotel and they were very accommodating and nice. I would definitely stay here again--and thought it was a great value.

We stayed here for 2 nights, very comfortable 2 nights.
The same side of the street (one minute walk from the hotel), there is a small shop, they make a kind of sesame seed biscuits, very delicious, we go there morning and night, still miss it .
We ate dinner in the Chinese restaurant one night, there were only three tables of guest with 4 or 5 attendants, but we could not see them around often, serving was very slowly, we had to wait at least 20 minutes for one dish to come after another.
Because my husband has high blood pressure, we requested some dish with less salt and less oil, guess what, the chef actually said he does not know how to make it that way, so he refused to take the order, this is way too much.
We have been traveling every year in mainland China for more than 10 years, this is the first time we were treated like this.
Conclusions: Hotel great, restaurant poor.
