“Perfect place for a short getaway!”
Reviewed January 25, 2014

We got the panoramic view room which was on the second floor. The carpet was dirty but everything else was clean. The view of from the balcony made everything worth it.

The staff turned on the AC before we arrived and the room was nice and warm by the time we got there.

The room gets a bit noisy, you can hear everything! It is not just when the music from the bars are playing, you can even hear people talking outside.

The staff is also very friendly. Another bonus is that there is Wifi in our room.

This is not a four star hotel (you are also not paying the price of a four star hotel), so please don't expect a four star hotel. I would treat it as a cute B&B with an amazing location. I would definitely stay there for a short stay in Suzhou!

Room Tip: Second floor has amazing views-we were in room 2016 and loved the view from that room.

Located in old parts of Suzhou at a canal; great room in an old, historic 2 story building. Not accessible directly to the main road because there is no driveway, so you need to lug your bags all the way out to the main road (200 meter). Taxi driver was not aware of this place even after providing him address written in Chinese, finally we need to call hotel and receptionist guided him way to hotel, it is recommended to take location map printout (in Chinese).

Despite being located in a historic building, the rooms are pretty modern furnished: Good beds and modern bathroom with huge shower.

In the night whole area gets into life, with unique kind lighting. You will find large laminated faces hanging at pillars.

There is a departure point for tourist boats on the opposite site of the canal. If you continue your walk towards opposite side you will reach lot scenic points and not to be missed.

I booked this hotel online and chose it due to its location to the old part of Suzhou. It is in walking distance to some great sites, the metro, visitor information and shopping downtown.

The first thing one should know is that no taxi is able to take you directly to this hotel as it is located on one of the canals. The taxi will only take you so far (Shangtang road) and then you have to take a short walk through the very small streets and across a bridge. A great place if you have very light luggage. I came here for the weekend from Nanjing so found this was quite suitable.

Reception staff were very helpful and spoke reasonable English. The hotel had no English maps or tour guides. However a short walk away there is a visitor information centre which can help, which I would recommend.

I had an upstairs room overlooking the canal and although the room was small I found it very comfortable. At night it does get noisy from the restaurants and people walking by below however this quietened down around 11pm. One thing I did enjoy was there was very little noise from traffic overnight therefore very quiet and peaceful. The bathroom was very clean and towels of reasonable standard. The bed was the typical hard Chinese style and very low to the ground. The hotel provided free water, a kettle and tea which was complimentary.

The only thing I found most inconvenient is that this hotel did not provide a breakfast and the location for the morning did not have any other options to go out for breakfast. Although a ten to fifteen minute walk away towards to Shangtang road does give you options for a Chinese breakfast. Be prepared to test your language skills and be adventurous with the food here however worth the effort.

The hotel does have wifi in the lobby areas but can be variable in strength. The reception staff were very helpful as one day the wifi was non existent and they took me to another place where I could access this.

Overall a good place to experience a short stay with light luggage. Be prepared for a morning walk to breakfast bars and restaurants close by for lunchtime or evening meals.

A most romantic and fascinating location on the canal. The hotel restaurant is close, inexpensive, and has a variety of dishes. The staff are helpful, rooms have heaters, and plenty of light. Rooms are a bit older and not as high quality as the photos, but they look basically the same, with nice bathrooms, and are spacious.

Room Tip: Canal side is noisier but maybe more interesting. All rooms have good windows.

If you truly want to experience the atmosphere of Suzhou, the channel and garden city, Royal Garden Inn is the place to stay. It is located right on a channel in the most idyllic area of Suzhou. At Royal Garden Inn, you are in the middle of it all. When you step out of the hotel door, you are on a walkway right next to the channel. You can have dinner at cozy little restaurant with great food next door and sit on their roof terrace. You can take an evening stroll along the channel and end up at a little tea house a few buildings down and sit outside by the channel. You can take a boat ride on the channel from the little boat dock opposite the hotel. Everything is close by. Also Lingering Garden is only a 15 min walk away from the hotel. The Lingering Garden is definitely the best garden to visit in Suzhou, because it is not as crowded as The Humble Administrator's Garden and it has live music.

The location of the hotel is as good as it gets. Other aspects are not quite as perfect. The rooms are clean and ok. They should really get proper doors for the bathrooms thou. Currently the doors are of glass or carved wood with drapes for at least some privacy.

We paid extra to get a scenery room with a view of the channel. It was kind of nice to be able to see the channel from the window, but a big problem was that the room was very noisy until about 10 pm, because lots of people walked right below the windows all the time and there was definitely no sound isolation. The restaurant next door also had their radio turned on until we asked the hotel staff to tell them to turn it off, which they did. So sleep quality is not the best. All in all I don't think it is necessarily worth getting a scenery room, because in a place like Suzhou you really shouldn't spend a lot of time at the hotel. The rooms at the back are also probably less noisy,

Despite the cons, I still think this hotel is the place to stay in Suzhou. At no other hotel can you experience the atmosphere of the channel city as strongly. The hotel is perfectly fine for staying one or two nights.

Contrary to many reviews I read, most of the staff actually spoke fairly good English and were helpful.

When you arrive by taxi, the hotel may be a little hard to find, because obviously the taxi can't drive into channel area. However, if the taxi drops you off at the right place, you are only a short walk from the hotel, so just look for the channel and you will see the hotel.

Nice hotel, very hard to find (print a map), good for one day. Close to the old district quite nice to be in, in fact the only place to be in Suzhou. You can walk the canal district from the hotel. the staff was helpful with there limited English.

Room Tip: take a room with a view of the canal, worth the couple of bucks more.
