I will take away two strong memories from our stay at this hotel – the lovely setting on the side of the canal and the overpowering smell of drains in the rooms.

We booked 4 nights and on arrival were delighted at the situation fronting right onto the very attactive canalside, one of the best sights in Suzhou. The first room we were shown into was grubby, small and had a smell of drains and a view out onto a blank wall. After half an hour in the room, we simply could not stand the smell any longer and as the bathroom could not be closed off from the room we realised they had had the windows open earlier so the smell would not be so noticeable. We asked for an upgrade but were told that wasn't possible. We still asked to be moved and were given an even smaller room with a pillar in the centre. The wall paper wasn't quite as dirty as the first room but the view was again of a blank wall. We slept there one night but again asked to be moved as the smell of sewage was appalling.

The third room was larger with a glassed in bathroom and a view of the canal. The bathroom had a skimpy curtain for a bit of privacy. The drains still smelt but maybe not so badly in this room and we minimised the smell by keeping the glass bathroom door closed and making sure we always put the plug in the drain of the basin and left some water in it. We had noticed that there was no U-bend and the strong smell was coming from the drain.

We ate dinner one night in the restaurant attached to the hotel. It too was grubby, the food was not good and the service was almost rude.

The rooms vary and some are very dirty. The cleaning is poor and the beds are hard. To stay one night in this hotel because of its situation is very interesting particularly as it gives you a chance to see the canal lit up with lanterns at night. However, don't ever think of staying longer, the smell is just unbearable.

We spent 3 nights here. The bed was comfortable by China standards, so quite hard! Our room was on the canal which was a bit noisy during the day with tour guides, but this stops at 9pm and then it is very peaceful all night. Air conditioning and sit down toilet. The staff where very helpful and mostly had good English. They were very good at writing address for place we wanted to go. The restaurant next door is part of the hotel complex and serves delicious food. The hotel is in a redeveloped tourist street, but go under the bridge to find real China.

The Royal Garden is pleasantly situated on a canal in the old part of Suzhou. But the the rooms are small, uncomfortable and cramped with a pillar rising inconveniently in the middle of the room. That may not be true of all the rooms. There is no elevator and plenty of steps to negotiate with your luggage. There is no breakfast and while there is free internet access, it is painfully slow. Another disappointment is the neighborhood itself. It's a real problem to find Western food at all. There really aren't very many options of any sort. I can't think of many positives about this hotel. It's not particularly expensive but it's overpriced for what you get. Tourists can do better.

Royal Garden Inn has an elegant interior and is located at a strategic position along the canal of charming 7-mile Shan Tang Street (Qi Li Shan Tang Jie) in Suzhou. This is a long stretch of ancient small street, split across by a large road traffic bridge. One end of the street is sort of a "rebuilt" old street with lots of gorgeous art and handicrafts shops, snack shops, souvenirs, fashion and accessories while the street on the other side of the bridge is made up of really old (but full of character) and original shops (mostly fruits and vege stalls, tiny restaurants and snack shops and residences. Both ends of the street present very interesting walks for tourists (who mostly gather at the "newer" old street where this hotel is located at). Views along the canal is fabulous, especially at night when the lanterns are lit.

The cheaper rooms are rather small with no view to speak of from its windiow, though the room itself is adequately furnished. Wall/Door sound-proofing is good - you don't hear much noise coming from the corridors or neighbours. Door leading to the toilet and shower room is a see-through semi-glass door. The room's aircon is not operational from MID-April onwards. This fact was confirmed by the reception staff when I asked for the air-con remote controller which was not found in the room. However, this was not indicated at the booking website when I made the booking and so I was dismayed that the only way I could cope with the weather is based purely on the room windows (you know - shut the windows when it gets too chillly in the room and open them when you need cool air....?!). This hotel practice comes as a surprise to me as the hotel's website (and partner booking sites) clearly states that ALL rooms are air-conditioned (just like any other regular hotel or even hostels). Given that there are other cheaper comparable hotels nearby, I would have chosen another hotel that offers what it promises had I known that the aircon does not operate in this hotel during my booking.

To be fair to the guests, the hotel should have made known this fact clearly (NO airconditioning from mid April onwards!!!) on its website instead of stating that ALL rooms ARE air-conditioned. It's a shame as this hotel has the potential to be a good one.

By the way, Tongli makes a good day trip. A pretty canal town about 50 minutes by bus (frequent departure) from Suzhou's northern long-distance bus-station (which is just a few bus-stops away from this hotel). Be prepared for lots of domestic Chinese tourists there in photo-taking frenzy though ; )

After I had been to Lijiang last year, I knew i wanted to stay in old town and not in the city when i get to Suzhou. Suzhou is famous for its water towns and so I went searching for accomodation which is situated at the water town itself. However, i realized Suzhou itself doesnt have much accomodatian at its water canals. Most of the accomodations are modern buildings , if not , the one located near the water canals are hostels. Luckily after much browsing, I found "Royal Garden Inn". Its located in the famous Tongli Street itself. Surrounded with old structures , water canal right just the front step, old bridges to cross the canals, just the way I imagine Suzhou to be. The rooms in the Inn itself is modern with LCD TV, modern toilet with strong hot water pressure, big beds , fresh n clean towels. If you are intending to stay there, get the rooms with balcony because the view is just amazing, looking out at Tongli Street and the water canals will just take your breath away . The staffs were great , arranging our day tour and a private car to take us to Shanghai Pudong Airport on our last day. We had enjoyed our stay with Royal Garden Inn and definately will stay there again.
