“Fascinating”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

Our boat trip on the Suzhou Canal was a highlight of our trip. The old houses are well kept and show the old way of life, before the modern city was built around the historic centre. We got off the boat at one point and walked through the old narrow streets through a market area selling fresh vegetables, home baked cakes and biscuits, roasted peanuts and a variety of food. Back on the boat we noticed locals and tourists dining at restaurants along the canal. We loved the atmosphere and it reminded us of the Venice Canals.

“it was okay”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

For some reason we thought there would be more to it. It was okay and the boat drivers did a good job avoiding other boats. The tour guide gave a good history of this canal.

“Oriental Venice”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

This is one of the best trips I took while in China. The ride is quiet and peaceful and a chance to see the "old China" that we have read about. If you can, have the boat stop at a local market and get out and have a look around. The people in the market are friendly and happy to pose for pictures. There are some things you might not want to see, for sale, however this is a different culture, so try to remain non-judgemental. This is an extremely photogenic area of China so make sure you have an extra memory card and battery for your camera.

“worth a boat trip”
Reviewed May 2, 2013

The boats trips take about an hour. The moat part of the trip is pretty standard but the canal part allows you to get a glimpse of how life used to be for the Chinese ... living next to the water & using it to meet all of your needs. Some of the buildings are very photogenic. You can walk here from the Holiday Inn Jasmine Hotel.

“Boat Tour”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

I highly recommend a boat tour of the canals. A peaceful ride along the canals is reasonably priced and worth the money. Great for artistic pictures and seeing the back roads and alleys of the town.
