We took an old rusty boat onto the canal which worried me a little but it was worth seeing the way the people actually live. Not in the high rises which remain empty. We saw people washing their clothes in the canal and also fishing in it. I watched as a cat played with a rat in back of an old house. I am sure the water is polluted. As we passed under the walkways the locals waved and smiled at us and even took pictures. It was a very humbling experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and were glad that we had an English speaking translator as the skipper did not speak English.

Suzhou is also know as the Venice of East and quite apt. It is very interesting boat ride as you can see a lot of things. Excellent opportunity for people who love to take pictures.

The Grand Canal of China is the longest Ancient Grand Canal in the world. Our boat ride along the Grand Canal, Suzhou section was quite breathtaking. Suzhou is known as the “Venice of the East”. It is situated on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. We enjoyed seeing the stone bridges along the canal and the many ancient houses and buildings on both sides of the Canal. For people who live along the Canal, water taxis are the main mode of transportation. Cruising the Grand Canal was quite an experience and the best way to appreciate the beauty of typical ancient river town dwellings and historical relics along the Yangtze. As it was dusk when we began our boat ride, we watched the lights and lanterns light up along the canal - what a magical experience.
