“Very good Suzhou cuisine”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2012

This hard-to-find Restaurant has a very good reputation for its traditional Suzhou dishes. Squirrel Fish and other favorites are more or less on par with, but not as pricey, as what one finds in, for example, the famous Songhelou Restaurant. Service, decor and ambience are also quite good.

“Great food, not easy to find but worth the effort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 8, 2012

This place is a few hundred meters down a dim alley off the main street, but it's not dangerous. You will walk past some small one-room flats at street level. It is worth the walk to get to this restaurant! There were a few foreigners in there, but it was mostly locals. There are several dining rooms, so it's larger than it appears from the front. Wumen Renjia means Wu's Family, and I felt like I was being welcomed to the family table for a meal. The menu I got has English names for many of the dishes, but the wine and beer list was only in Chinese. We had some great food, such as braised vegetables, sliced fish in rice wine sauce, pork balls, and crab in tofu. The bill was 130 Rmb total for more than two people could eat.
This one goes on my return list for my next visit!

“Good food and fantastic surroundings”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 12, 2012

In a charming old part of Suzhou you find this very authentic restaurant tugged in the old small buildings. You can choose to sit in the front where it like a "soup-kitchen" - but very charming/authentic. Or if you are a bigger group there are several private rooms. The food is Suzhou kitchen - Jiangsu kitchen. Good menu card with pictures, which is a good communication tool with the waiters as they do not speak english.
Great dishes with the Sweet and Sour fish turned inside out with deliciously cut. Lotus root dishes. A abundant variety of good food. Can only be recommended.

“Foreign but a favorite with locals”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2012

We were invited to this restaurant by a Shanghai family who eats only here when they visit Suzhou. It was easily the most foreign experience with respect to food we had in China. The food consists of the local Suzhou specialties most of which I never encountered in other restaurants. I can't imagine many westerners wander in here on the spur of the moment. If you are adventurous, give it a try! I tried to write this review last summer but did not get the "go-ahead" from Trip Adviser until now, 7 months later so my memory of what we ate exactly is dim. However I remember trying small eels sizzling in oil, black skinned chicken, and sweet porridge, along with more typical grilled duck and fish. The interior is nice enough but not grand in any way. It is very popular with all tables filled Not sure how you get in if you don't speak Chinese.

“Local cuisine near Humble Administrator's Garden”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2009

We were recommended this local eateries by our guide at H.A. garden. About 200 m across the car park after you exit H.A. Garden. It offers local Suzhou cuisine that was quite clean and nice. The place is not big, but not too crowded too. The decor. was traditional and most service staff speak Mandarin only. Spend less than RMB 150 for 5 people's lunch here. Good value.
