This is one of Suzhou's lesser museums, and has obviously not been remodeled or even cleaned in a long time. It's small and ends in a shop with very expensive clothes. Still, it's pretty much the only place to see the silk making process, worms and all.

The Suzhou Silk Museum is located on the northern side of town, easily found and featured in most tour books. It provides a decent overview of the history of silk in Suzhou over the past 4,000 years along with examples of live silk worms and functioning looms. Your self-guided tour starts in the Ancient Hall where most of the artifacts and explanations of the history are found. The Sericultural (live worms) and Weaving rooms are next, which are interesting from a practical perspective. The museum ends with a small Mulberry garden (the worms like to eat the leaves) and another historical section showing a Street in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

In summary, I found this a decent museum although not a spectacular one. Many of the displays seemed a bit older and there was quite a bit of construction going on in the Halls to the right of the entrance. As with most museums in the area this place could definitely benefit from an audio guide. In any case, a visit here coupled with one to the Silk Mill (see separate review) will give you an appreciation of the subject. I recommend a trip to both but wish I could be more enthusiastic about doing so.

I went on a day trip from Shanghai with a friend. The coach trip was good and we stopped for lunch at a local chinese restaurant where the food was great.

The silk museum was very interesting and the adjoining shop had many beautiful things for sale so make sure that you take plenty of money or credit card.

It is was part of the touristic guide but it really surprised me. They have this museum that is explained by a guide and they make two groups, one for foreigners in english and another group for Chinese. The museum is quite complete, with some old things and also a real time demonstration on how to get the silk from the nature and transform it on a real product. After that they will try to sell you some silk blankets and lead you to a fashion show with several clothes made of silk and it is really catchy and you will want to buy something afterwords when you get to the store the things are really good quality and the prices are not expensive but not very cheap as well. I think you can get cheaper outside there but I am not comparing quality.
