“Great Location, need work”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2012

This was a very special hotel in the heart of Suzhou, wonderful location, but it is badly in need of renovation, carpets stained, very uncomfortable bed, poor lighting, but great service...

Room Tip: Maybe try staying in the newer section...but not as atmospheric...

We stayed one night at the Pingjing Lodge in early January and then moved to the Pan Pacific Suzhou, which is a 5 star hotel that charged less (booked via Hotels.com) than we paid at the Pingjiang Lodge. The taxi driver taking us from the railroad station did not know the Lodge but got us close. The staff were nice, but spoke very little English. They showed us our room but it took a while for the individual room heaters to warm up the space and the electronic lock didn't work (they had to give us a physical key). The room had cable TV, but the only non-Chinese TV station is the official Chinese English news channel. The Lodge is located very centrally and around the corner from the pretty PingJiang Rd. When we were leaving, the staff told us that taxis will not come to the Lodge, so we had to move with our luggage to the nearest street (probably 100 meters) to flag down a taxi. It was "an experience" and probably nice in Spring and Fall. However, we found it very expensive for what it offered in January and we would not stay there again.

The entire compound includes a main house and another area across the street. The main house was once the home of a wealthy man. The architecture and furnishings are traditional Chinese. Walking around the main house one has the feeling of being in a mansion. It is at a cross section of two streets. Car can be driven to the door from Niujia Alley. The cross street is along side a canal that was once residential. It is now developed in a "culture street" with beautiful boutiques and restaurants. It is known as Pingjian Historic Street. The reason cars are not allowed to enter into to this street is because it is a pedestrian street. The Pingjiang Lodge is a very short walk from where the taxi drop off point. The alternative is to ask the taxi driver to take the Niujia Alley where the main entrance to the Pingjiang Lodge is located. Within easy walking distance is the museum of Suzhou's Kun Opera. You will be in a treat for a walk through Suzhou's rich art and cultural history. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Less than one mile away is the Suzhou Museum designed by I.M. Pei, next door to it is the Humble Administrator's Garden, down the street about 2 blocks away is Lion Grove Garden, once the home of I.M. Pei's ancestors. The walk from Pingjiang Lodge to the three above mentioned attraction is best on the opposite side of the canal because the smell of the canal is not pleasant even on cool days. One down side of Pingjiang Lodge is that some of the rooms are dark. Breakfast is included even though the menu is modest but adequate. The attractions of this Lodge far exceeds the minor downside.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with good light if dark rooms are not acceptable to you.

the hotel is strategic located. excellent location.
the receptionist are very helpful and informative.
surrounding with "all needed to know about Suzhou"
next to a lane where one can find a sample of local Chinese life , activities, shops & restaurants and ..........................

Only slight issue, if you have big luggage or more than one luggage , then you may have a problem. This hotel is situated in a short narrow lane where taxi is difficult (or do not want 0 to go in.

Room Tip: ground floors will be nice , can see bamboo trees.

Tucked away in a long alley, the Pingjiang Lodge is a genuine old Chinese mansion. I sprang for an expensive room, a deluxe suite, and it was great pretending I was Gong Li for a night. Furnishing are old and in keeping with the atmosphere, e.g., red silk cushions. The ceilings are high, but overall the place is dark and atmospheric, so you need to expect that. If you are with a romantic partner and can afford it, get the bridal suite...really special, but avoid weekends when it will be booked...ask to see it if you don't stay there. The Lodge is hard to find for some taxis, but close enough to walk to the shopping area and some excellent restaurants.

We stayed for 2 nights at the Pingjang Lodge and thoroughly enjoyed it.Prior to reaching Suzhou, we'd been staying in 4/5* hotels in the larger cities but this was a welcome change from the somewhat sterile experience at the earlier hotels. Yes - it's a bit quirky but it does have a very relaxed air about it. They serve breakfast across the road alongside the canal which means that you're quickly into enjoying some traditional sights - even if it's only folk making their way to work. The street which runs alongside the canal is full of great shops and bars. It was near the end of our 3 week trip and we needed a change from chinese food in the evening - amazingly enough we found a TGIFridays in the town.

Good location, but I expected more. The rooms they gave us smelled of sewer (the hotel is along the canal). The service was so so. There was only one person at the reception who spoke English. When we left to go to the train station, they told us to just walk down the street and haul a taxi. They forgot to mention that it is very difficult to get taxis on a Sunday evening. So we waited and waited and when we finally ended up taking a cycle riksha and made it to the train station it was too late and we had missed our train. From my experience in China, the Youth Hostels' staff was way more helpful. I would save my money and go to the Hostel across the bridge. Also, the breakfast buffet was nothing to write home about.... And the dining room had no windows.
