Suzhou Mingtown Suzhou Youth Hostel

An old traditional house, converted in an atmospheric and functional hostel on a street - longing a canal - where all the people go for a nice stroll or to sit at one of the many tea houses.
You cannot imagine anything nicer, and more "Chinese" that this place. It has a café nearby where you can have breakfast with a discount if you are a resident (10 RMB instead of 20 for English breakfast - which is only scrambled eggs, toast and jam). The staff are generally nice.

The hostel with the perfect location in Suzhou in Pingjiang Lu pedestrian street.

Pros:
- perfect location in pedestrian street (as well as easy reachable from north bus terminal and train station - Taxi, 15 yuan)
- nice rooms in old buildings
- good english speaking staff
- great outside patio to chill in the evening

Cons:
- lacking hostelling atmosphere since no living area
- no Wifi in rooms
- hot water limited to 7am to noon and 7pm to midnight
- no breakfast included (Restaurant Ming Town next door with reduced english breakfast for guests)
- no laundry service (though washing machine can be used (without dryer))

Booked a 2-twin bed room with bathroom, overlooking the canal. The decor is fantastic - very classic and charming. The location on the pedestrian walkway can't be beat. The staff is not extraordinarily helpful - I asked for a more affordable Chinese food option for dinner, and a staff member recommended a place that served up cold food that should've been hot! :( The internet, like most hostels in China, was shoddy.

Roomwise, the bathroom is smaller, definitely one person at a time, but very clean. The hostel was quiet, and the beds were comfortable. I would definitely come again, especially for the price!

I booked this hostle because I was traveling with my son and he said the hostels are better than hotels beacuse of the cheaper price, better location, you can share experiences with the other customers, etc.
After this experience I think I'll never stayed in another hostel.
The building was nice and well located in the historic center of the city, but that was all.
The rooms were very very cold, the bathroom smels bad, there were no space for the bagage, no nitgh tables, etc.

The rooms in this hostel are snug and cute with lovely traditional wooden chinese beds and wooden frame windows with an authentic feel all looking into a lovely courtyard.
There was a seperate shower area in the bathroom which always gains points, hot water and good water pressure.
Laundry facilities available.
The rooms were clean and excellent value for money and the location is bang in the middle of the most beautiful part of Suzhou with the little bridges, cafes and restaurants at your fingertips.

There is not much of a communual area but a bar 2 doors down which is owned by the hotel and available for guests.

Recommended.

This hostel's location is its major strength, in a historic district of Suzhou with several sites within close walking distance, and to the central commercial district within 10-15 minutes on foot.

Right next door is a nicely decorated cafe, with 2 in-house cats, known as Maomi (sic) Cafe, with internet available.

The staff are generally quite friendly and helpful with directions, depositing valuables, other requests, etc., with one male staff member being the exception, usually providing refusals.

The dorm rooms themselves are furnished with solid wooden beds with comfortable mattresses. The lockers are also wooden.

Some drawbacks are, the common area where Wifi is available lacks heat in the winter, and the provided bar area is rather smokey.

Overall, an average recommendation for Suzhou. Give this one some consideration for your trip.
