“Indian Temple in Hohhot”

Hohhot Five-Pagoda Temple (Wuta Si)
Ranked #3 of 54 things to do in Hohhot
More attraction details
Attraction details
Owner description: This pagoda is quite unique in Mongolia. The style is from Indian Buddhism. Although it is called the "1000-Buddha Pagoda", there are actually some 1563 carvings of Buddha on its exterior walls. Inside the Pagoda there is, sadly, nothing at all - it was all stripped-out and destroyed in the Cultural Revolution. However, the empty interior has been used to display an ancient stone-carved Mongolian Map of the Cosmos - on Buddhist principles. Another copy of it is outside, set in the walls of the Pagoda grounds.

“Indian Temple in Hohhot”
Reviewed April 28, 2014

Actually, the temple displays Indian influences.
You can climb up,to the five pagodas, but that's it.
There was no information in English at all.

Apart from that, all temples in Hohhot display loads of prayer flags which provides great photo opportunities.

“This 1700s pagoda definitely worth a visit”
Reviewed April 20, 2014

A very unusual temple featuring 5 rooftop 'pagoda-like' structures featuring an unusual array of bodhisattvas and buddhas (e.g. not the usual 5-Buddha assemblages of the 5 dhyani Buddhas, etc.). Also unusual is the engraving of one of Buddhism's most important texts, the Diamond Sutra, in Sanskrit, Tibetan and Mongolian around the base. You can climb to the roof to walk around the five rooftop pagodas but best to have a small flashlight or torch with you as the stairwell is dark and the steps small and slippery.

“The Out of The Way City with Great Museums”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

If u are ever in Beijing, Hohhot is west of Beijing and A great city to check out...The people are very lovely. The city is lively, with great restaurants, and street merchants. My wife was raised there and when I was in China this past February took me to introduce me to her Family.
Now if you like cold, February is your time of year, not for me..It was so cold I could feel my noise
or my ears..Yes bring warm clothes.. But the city was so beautiful and wow so many great
Museums to see...The whole river running through the city was frozen....But that didn't stop
us every morning going out to see the sites.....Lots of buses and cabs....And wow the night life
there was great.....So I didn't want to leave, but when I did what great memories..What a Great month I spent in China......

“Beautiful”

Five pagoda temple is a beautiful space, and really interesting to look around. There's a small museum as well, although most of the information is only written in Chinese.

“Different from other pagoda”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

The five pagoda also known as The Diamond based Sarira Pagoda, at the end of the temple is very different from the rest. Need to walk through 4 courtyards to reach it. There's a clay cauldron that reflect the pagoda which i find it very interesting. You can climb up the pagoda and get a birds eye view of the city. The rest of the smaller shrine and temple is not very interesting.
