The Taohualing Hotel is fabulous but it just fails by a whisker to make the five-star grade. The staff are attentive. After flight delays we arrived at 3.15am and were escorted to our room by a baggage man an assistant manager and someone who just came along to make sure everything was okay, and they do not encourage tipping. We were in Yichang for a family event and dined with 40 others in a private dining room and everything was superb. The rooms are spacious, I had a suite which was way above the standard of many hotels with a five-star rating. Huge and very comfortable bed with a pillow menu. Large bathroom with shower and bath plus a large lounge area with comfortable seating and plenty of space to entertain. The lost half star is for the breakfasts. When I get up in the morning I am not the world's most sociable creature and don't want to have to find a space at a large table with a group of strangers. Breakfasts are in the Chinese style, spicy hot pots, soups and dumplings, but dishes kept running out and it took an age for refills to arrive. On the one occasion I ordered room service breakfast the food was cold, the coffee was cold and they forgot to bring any chopsticks or cutlery. The warmest thing on the plate was the orange juice. I'm sorry to have to end on this negative note as I would recommend this hotel to anyone and it is superbly situated in the centre of the city and close to the river for anyone joining a cruise.

This hotel definitely fits a 5 star rating or above and meet my expectations in every way particularly considering the cost. Its location is good and the surrounding gardens and nearby park are beautiful. The in house or restaurant meal costs were good and at a reasonable price.

The language barrier was small issue as only some of the staff soke english but the overall experience was excellent.

Room Tip: Only a few of the staff speak English but the ones that do not are very helpful and eventually get there. For the price of the rooms this is a very nice place to stay.

Wow, I felt as if I were a time traveler and was back in a mid-western U.S. hotel in 1950. Arrived late and stayed only one night in a room in the V.I.P. wing. Very dark, old furniture with lots of wear. Electronics (TV, light switches, etc.) looked vintage 1950. Huge room by Chinese standards and it was clean. Bed was terrifically comfortable, but in all honesty, the floor would have felt good I was so tired. Our group had a dinner upon arrival that was probably the best food I ate in China for eight days. Fantastic dishes, presented superbly and very spicey! Breakfast buffet was ok, but was amused to see the remnants of our group's previous night's dinner being served as breakfast entrees. We left in the morning by 9:00 a.m., so can't give a full review of other amenities at the hotel or nearby.
