Crowne Plaza Yichang

Certificate of Excellence

We arrived tired and disappointed at the bad weather from a Three Gorges cruise. Equipped with only a vague mention of a Crowne Plaza hotel near the river port and no help from asking passers by (and we are native Mandarin Chinese speakers), we found this and were quoted a very reasonable, even delightful walk-in rate of RMB750 (~£72, US$100). This is truly a 5-star hotel. The room was huge and everything was well-appointed. The service was excellent throughout. In particular a female assistant manager helped my husband get a passport photocopy which enabled him to buy high-speed rail tickets which would have been impossible otherwise. The air-conditioning, although reporting a low temperature, did not cool the room and is set centrally so that it cannot be adjusted. At least the staff helped by opening a window. The breakfast buffet is huge. Dinner buffet was ok, we went late and so some things were not very fresh or were not replenished. The location next to the large modern WanDa shopping centre provides lots of other convenient food and beverage options. FYI the in-hotel travel agency was so-so and the actual tour guide for the “SanXiaRenJia” 1-day excursion was terrible, but this does not have to do with the hotel. We stayed longer in the otherwise unimpressive Yichang because this hotel was so good.

Room Tip: River view rooms are available, but views may not be if there is heavy fog! Staff can open room wind...

We got a very good rate on this hotel mid week through booking.com
The rooms are big by Chinese standards, modern and well furnished. All amenities and a very comfortable bed with a pillow menu! The hotel is right on the river front and backs onto a big shopping complex it is easy to get around. We had a seafood buffet one night in the hotel and it was very good but really enjoyed walking the back streets of Yichang and trying the street food.
The staff didn't speak great English but were friendly. There is quite a nice pool and small gym too.

Huge lobby, beautifully appointed rooms with all amenities and very good quality giveaways. Comfortable bed and very clean. Yes, not many people speak English in the hotel but you can get by with patience and simple words and the fact that the staff are by and large helpful and friendly, it doesn't really matter. Breakfast very good although I have had better in Yichang. Very centrally located and lots to do around the area. River view rooms are available and worth the price difference although my window was so dirty that although I had a river view room I could hardly see out of it!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a river view. It is worth the price difference although the windows could do with...

We never expected to stay here but when our flight to Shanghai got canceled, we were booked into this hotel. The rooms were big, It was clean. The lobby was quite large and the staff was very accommodating even though they could hardly communicate in English.
It was also well located and we spent the aftenoon in a very modern mall next door. They even had a Walmart which was great since our luggage was torn up on the Yangtzee River Cruise. Yes we got duct tape there!

Not that we plan to return to Yichang, but if we did, this would be the place to stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Yichang Crowne Plaza. We were traveling with our 20 month old baby girl and found the hotel very comfortable - large, high quality mattress, linens and towels. The pool area was quiet and well equipped. The staff were friendly. It is right on the river and next to a high end shopping centre with a Walmart where you can buy essentials like milk. The breakfast was very good. A good selection of sweetened and unsweetened breads, eggs made freshly and an espresso machine. It far than exceeded our expectations and the price was excellent.

The Crowne Plaza Yichang definitely seemed like the nicest hotel in town. The property was all new and gleaming. We arrived early and were immediately upgraded to an available club level room. It was quiet, large and comfortable. We had a nice view of the city but not the river. The hotel is part of a large western style shopping mall complex and is right on the Yangtze River. It was about a ten-minute taxi ride into the somewhat older downtown area. Now for the bad part. Language barriers were quite severe. This hotel is clearly not accustomed to western visitors much less tourists. The concierge spoke very little English and the hotel used a third party travel agency, also with very limited English, to book our tour to the Three Gorges Dam area. Due to these language barriers, we were unable to go to the Dam site on what was probably the clear day but had to wait until the next very fog filled day. We were unable to see much of anything on the tour. To add insult to injury, our private tour guide with the help of our private driver rushed us away from the dam site in order to save time for her special gallery visit full of extremely overpriced touristy “art”. The breakfast buffet, included, and dinner buffet, extra, were acceptable but not noteworthy by any means. The staff seemed confused as to why we were there at all. I guess this hotel would be fine for business travelers with a pre-arranged agenda but tourists should probably look elsewhere.

Room Tip: The River Side did have better views.

Reasonable rates, adequate breakfast which was at least fresh and quite varied, spacious rooms and friendly service. Perhaps the best hotel in town.

Room Tip: Avoid the river view rooms as if you open a window your room will fill with the stench of the Yangtz...
