This site is immense and well-organized for tourists. Explanations of the project as well as examples of equipment and building strategies add to the experience. A boat trip down a scenic gorge caps off the experience and enhances the experience.

Visited the three gorges via the hydrofoil (which will soon be discontinued) and again via private boat from Fengjie. The key parts (the gorges themselves) are quite a thing to see. The rest of the shore line get repetitive. It must have been really amazing a few years ago before the construction of the dam.
Raising the water level 110m (about 350feet) not only submerged several villages which had a lot of history and added to the trip along the river (1.3 million were displaced), but the higher water level also means that the mountains surrounding the river are 100m shorter, the cliffs are 100m shorter and the river much wider.
While it is ok now, it must have been truly amazing before. No more than a day should be spent there.

Quite simply some of the most stunning scenery you will ever see in your life! We did the Century Legend Cruise which I would highly recommend. Of the optional excursions, I would recommend the The Gorges Tribe. May is a great time to do it. Book now!!!!

We took a four night cruise on board the Yangzi Explorer as part of our Tauck China tour. The scenery along the river was fantastic. Sometimes you could see mountain goats and small waterfalls along the way. We passed the dam's locks too, which was nice. The daily excursions we made were interesting and varied (dam, relocation village, local market and kindergarten). The Yangzi Explorer is the best ship on the river. However, don't expect this ship to be luxurious. The food on board was not good. The cabins were dirty and worn down in some areas (even the suites. Ours was a suite on the Wu deck). The only place we got wifi was in the bar. But, all the staff were extremely friendly and tried their best. After the Yangzi we flew to Guilin and cruised the Li River. We preferred the beauty of the Li over the Yangzi. If you're thinking of either/or go for the Li. If you want to cruise the Yangzi, choose the Explorer. It will be your best option, but be prepared for the shortcomings.

Took a 2.5 hour boat trip through the gorges which was beautiful scenery. Then we had the chance to experience going through one of the locks on the damn which took about 20 minutes but was very cool to see first hand and to experience.
