“nice and warm”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 25, 2013

Nice and warm. Also clean and refurbished. Good central location near the pedestrian shopping street. Breakfast is ok and the dining room could be cleaner. The hotel is a little noisy in the rooms. The room service was prompt though many items were missing from the menu. We also enjoyed the english pub in the hotel where the service was friendly. The checkin was easy and good english was spoken.

As has been noted before, this hotel boasts a really good location, though I personally wouldn't rave about the pedestrian street. Still, it is nice to walk along a nearly traffic-less street and certainly a rarity in China. What I found most pleasing about the hotel was that the room was a good size, quite modern and clean, and the facilities were mostly functional. Altogether, a very comfortable place for an overnight stay. However, I did have problems with the air-conditioning, as did many of my colleagues. Unlike them though, who complained that their rooms were cold, mine was overbearingly hot and the only recourse I had was to shut the unit off completely and open the window. It didn't take long to cool the room, as you can imagine, but then I couldn't get the window closed properly afterwards. Still, a slightly chilly room was preferable to baking in bed.
I am not sure about whether I'd want to spend any length of time in this hotel and it certainly wouldn't be worth it on a B&B basis. Here's the thing: it's a bog standard international chain hotel in the better half of the rankings, generally speaking, but then why is the catering so awful? Breakfast was just a complete mess, on a par with the most useless Chinese run would-like-to-be internationals going. I'm not sure if I went to their regular dining room or whether they're refurbishing the place where it should have been, but if that was the dedicated dining room all I can say is that it looked like it had dropped out of the pages of the Naff Guide to Why Bother. Honestly, it was a horrible L-shaped room with dowdy furnishings, wonky tables and draughts everywhere. The food was mediocre at best and you know you're on to a loser when the coffee makers temperamentally spurt out only tepid drinks. I did manage to get a freshly made omelette (and I have been in places where that hasn't happened) but I had to pester the staff to go and get someone from the kitchen to make it. For me, as a business traveller, breakfast is important and this hotel didn't provide satisfactory service or choice. I was also a bit surprised at having to stump up a 200¥ deposit at check-in (which was less than efficient I might add) - never had to do that with any other hotel on a corporate account before. Fortunately, check-out was a breeze.

We stayed 4 nights while here for the Ice and Snow Festival the hotel is in a great location at the top of Zhongyang pedestrian street, you only have to walk out the front door and cross the road to start your journey down to the frozen wonderland of Songhua river. St Sophia Church is only 15 - 25 minutes walk away just depends on how fast you walk and how many times you stop and look around on the way.
For us it was very convenient to go out for a couple of hours and when we were cold we would return for a coffee / tea and thaw out.

We stayed in an executive room so that we had access the the club lounge for free tea/coffee all day and free soft drink, beer and food between 6-8pm, which we found to be very useful especially when you did not want to go out in the cold again.

We never went to breakfast before 9am and it appeared that by this time the staff had already clocked off. The breakfast buffet woulh have had a good range of choices if the food levels were maintained by the staff. Cereal and fruit were always available it was more then hot dishes that were either empty or barley warm. My husband wanted eggs one morning and when he asked the chef, Adam just pointed to an empty egg carton, it was not until my husband asked again for someone to get the eggs they appeared. Food was never as hot as it should be as then burners were always out, tables were never reset fully and trying to get a refill of your morning tea/coffee was nearly impossible.
I know we are not in a western country, however this hotel is apart of a world wide network and would have expected that they have certain standards to meet.
The only time we saw the staff, both chefs and wait staff with any sense of urgency was when someone from management turned up.

The Red Lion Pub, we good the first night for a drink and a snack or small meal, despite the fact that when we tried to order a vodka they did not have the know labels, however the other few nights were not as good as being a non smoker the room was full of smokers and even though we tried to sit as far away as possible we still ended up smelling like a ash tray.
The Chinese restaurant was very good, this is in the hotel but not associated with it but you could still charge the meal to your room. Service was ok, in my option very rude and abrupt but I have come to realise this is china and how they operate. There is an english menu with pictures however the staff have very little English so be prepared to repeat yourself or use sign language.

Overall we would recommend to stay here if you want to walk around Harbin city and not have to rely on taxis which when you do not speak Chinese is extremely difficult. However do not expect great service as it is few and far between when it comes to western standards.

We went to Red Lion bar on January 16 for a drink, listen to music and just chill out. We were told we have 10 mins to place our drinks order, not sure why! We ordered a gin tonic and a martini dry. The band was not good so we decided to leave after the 1st set, when we asked for the bill, we were told that our 2nd drink (one-for-one happy hour which we were not told) can be consumed when we come next time. Told him we do not live in Harbin, request to charge for the more expensive drink.
The black manager looking person came and say that it cannot be done because HR will check and they will get into trouble. Also we question how come we were charged for 1 gin and 1 bottle of tonic water - the same black guy told us that's how is served. We have traveled the world and have drinks at the finest establishments we know what gin and tonic is.
We asked to speak to a manager on duty, were told that the manager cannot be found and the senior manager is too busy to speak to us.
We paid in full, went to the front desk and spoke to the Asst. Manager on duty, the black guy came hurried out, looked very worried while we spoke to the lady manager. She offered to take out the price for 1 drink but we told her that is not why we spoke to her.
As an international hotel chain, the service standard is unacceptable - no one came to check if we want our 2nd drink after sitting there for more than an hour, they claimed they can't see that our drinks were finished. There were 6 guests including us! The black guy didn't want to call any manager to our assistance, only offered to help when we were seen talking to the manager, was arrogant and want to make us feel small!!
Besides location, there is nothing worth mentioning except unbelievably bad service!

Room Tip: Didn't stay at the hotel, DO NOT go to Red Lion bar - music was bad and service is even worse!

I stayed here with a friend in early January 2013, primarily because we came from New Zealand to visit the Ice Festival. We chose Holiday Inn because it is centrally located right a the bottom of the main walk street within easy reach of the main shopping area. Location wise, the Holiday Inn is perfect. Plenty of shops and places to eat that are a short walk. If you are particularly lazy, KFC, is the closest. We also chose Holiday Inn because it was supposed to provide a bus to Ice and Snow World with a pick up and drop off service. We thought this would be a good option. But, we were very disappointed to find that while we got dropped off, the bus did not come and pick us up again. It was a very stressful incident and it took almost an hour at Ice and Snow World to get a taxi. We naturally complained to the hotel staff, but they didn't act on it. The room was nice and modern with comfortable beds and a good shower. It was also clean, so we were pretty happy with it.
But there were some issues:
1. Our room was supposed to have wifi, but we had to go to end of the hall by the lift to be able to pick it up.
2. Despite our booking clearly showing that we had breakfast included in our package, we still were told it didn't.
3. When we arrived (admittedly early in the morning), the staff member was asleep at the reception desk. It wasn't a very professional look.
4. The servicing of our room was inconsistent.
5. The staff speak little English and tend to be a bit unhelpful, even with very basic questions.
On balance I would stay here again but only because of the location.

There is one thing and one thing only for which this hotel can be recommended and that is the location. After that, everything else goes downhill.
We entered the hotel to find a very dirty lobby - understood that the ice outside makes it difficult to keep the floor clean, but there is nothing more off-putting than entering a hotel with the floor full of dirty shoe marks. We had two rooms booked, for one of those we were asked to wait half an hour as the room was being made ready - at 5 in the evening!
For the other room, which was supposed to be a executive room, we were led to 5th floor (not an executive floor), into a small room. When we asked for wi-fi, they told us that this floor does not have wi-fi, but only a lan. "Please use the lan port". When we insistently seeked clarification on our room, it turned out that it was not even an executive room - would we be willing to go to a different wing across the road? Umm, no - and then a room surfaced. It was good, and I did enjoy the sleep quality there. Only to be disheartened at checkout - it must be the longest time taken in check-out in my entire traveling life, and it ended up in our paying 40 dollars for a lost bath-gown!! When we did not even use it!
So, definitely not a place I would recommend to anyone - infact I would advice against it.

We checked in on Jan 4, 2013 and are checking out in an hour, Jan 7, 2013. We chose this hotel based on over all reviews from Trip Advisor.

We are seasoned travelers and found this hotel to be just fine. The room we had is modern, with a king bed and the best pillows my wife and I have ever had at a hotel. The bathroom is very updated and has a great shower. The room has more electric outlet plugs then any I have found in Asia.

We arrived at 1 am after a late night flight from Shanghai. The hotel staff greeted us very well, struggled with English a little, however, we were checked in to room 511 on an executive priority club floor and were in our room in minutes.

We try never to eat any food in any hotel we ever stay at, so we can not comment on this aspect of the hotel.

The location is great, you can walk to most of the in town attractions (yes its very very cold here so bundle up).

Room Tip: We asked for a priority club room, since other reviewers talk about older rooms, all I can say is ma...
