Ibis Harbin Sophia Church Hotel
Ranked #7 of 1,152 Hotels in Harbin
Reviewed February 7, 2013

We stayed here for 4 nights in February 2013. The room was 269 RMB per night (or about US$43 -- I think there is better value out there with the Chinese chains such as Huating or Jinjiang. The hotel has very high traffic with lots of guests checking in, checking out, and asking for things -- so you had to wait, or be assertive in getting the attention of the (two) reception staff. The reception staff did not seem well trained for customer service as they were sometimes rude, gave inconsistent or conflicting information, and would multi-task by taking new requests while working on your request and eventually forget about you. I would have expected better training for an Ibis chain. The wired internet did not work in the guest room, but there was free wireless in the lobby which was relatively fast. The rooms were small, but tidy and clean -- good housekeeping! The common areas for the lobby, elevators, and hallways had very dirty carpets, from the ice and dirty snow being tracked in by the other guests. Great location, very convenient to everything. In summary, you can do better elsewhere by paying less for more, or paying the same for more.

Rooms are clean, comfortable and - crucially in Harbin - warm. The hotel is located in the centre of town within five minutes walk of St Sofia's Cathedral and the main, pedestrianised shopping street. The room and especailly bathroom was quite small but for the price I think very good value.

The only downside was the breakfast, which was terrible! Go to the shopping mall next door and find their coffee shop.

Hotel is in a very good location but there are trade off.
1. Water system is pathetic when you are having your shower or washing hands at basin it becomes hot than cold constantly and all the time.
2. Although they say it is a non smoking hotel people are smoking all over the place in the rooms, corridor and cafe.
3. When you ask staff for information either they cant speak english or they gave wrong information, many times with us. e.g. told us that KFC is round the block walk around three block and still could not find the KFC in -20 celsius
4. During breakfast the container holding the sugar had clums of sugar stuck to the serving spoon and it is brown colour, even though I ask to change it, that same container was use for all four days I was here, everybody share that sugar container.
5. Our rooms windows facing carpark and road very nosiy lots of horning.
6. Security of hotel very poor, anybody can just walk off the street walk through the reception on to the lift lobby without anybody asking. Also room door does not have view finder and security chain lock, so you cant check who is at the door, very dangerous.

When you book an internationally branded hotel you expect a little bit more than you would from a Chinese independent hotel. This hotel has a great location, in the heart of downtown Harbin, attached to a swanky shopping mall complete with Versace, Tiffany and the ubiquitous Louis Vuitton stores. However it appears to suffer from poor maintenance and bad management. The vending machine in the lobby turns out to be the 24 hour snack and refreshment service as the restaurant is only open for breakfast (not recommended). The corridors are poorly lit and the carpet appears filthy. The rooms however are small but clean. The double bed was large and comfortable. The TV was very small and the in room facilities were two tea bags and a kettle. The bathroom was a modular unit which was clean but the design means the toilet moves when you sit on it , which can be a bit unnerving. I enjoyed a good nights sleep but felt a bit let down as I had expected better.

We stayed here because of the location. It appears a bit in clean from the outside but the rooms are actually very clean. It offers basic accommodation in a great location for everything in Harbin. Reception is always busy and avoid the breakfast but all in all a clean comfortable stay.

Booked on the Accor website for only RMB269 a night. For this incredible price, don't expect much views, frills or service. Rooms are small but functional. We were quite pleased when the hotel was able to offer our 6 rooms to us at 8am in the morning when the hotel was fully booked on a Saturday.

Our peeves:

1. No bathrooms in the lobby or breakfast area. You will have to take matters into your own hands once you've checked out or waiting for your room to be ready. The nearest public bathroom is next door up some stars.

2. Limited waiting/social areas. The lobby is always occupied by the travel agent who takes bookings for the free shuttle bus to the Ice and Snow World. She sits, the customer stands. The breakfast area/bar has lots of sitting but is closed from 10am.

3. Wired internet in rooms only. Free wifi is available at the lobby but you have to log in with your name etc. Pack your Airport Express.

4. Harbin traffic. This one is out of control of the hotel but the hotel is on a very busy 2 lane road with limited taxi access. Please prebook your transfers accordingly - the staff is very helpful with helping you call for a call.

5. Breakfast. Skip the insipid selection and waddle down to Shitou Dao on the next block across the street from the hotel for some hot wonton soup and savory buns. If you must, there is a Starbucks on the same street at the New 100 mall. The Oriental Dumpling King place only opens at 10:30am.

6. Thin walls. We could hear everything, including the couple next door enjoying their "Happiness raincoat" available at the vending machine at the lobby for RMB20.

In Harbin, taxis will usually rip you off but that isn't the hotel's fault. Blame the greedy drivers who are busting their frozen butts driving in the tundra. We paid 100rmb for a taxi from the train station to the hotel and 400rmb for 6 people in a van to the airport. It is common for taxis to stop and pick up someone else. Welcome to Harbin!!!

Room Tip: Avoid the 3rd floor with the breakfast area and screaming French kids.
