The Shangri-La is an international brand of repute and this new (maybe a year or so) hotel holds out every promise of living up to that reputation but misses on one important point. The restrained but elegant style of the foyer eschews much of the gratuitous Chinese bling that characterises local iterations of five-star hotels. The staff are courteous, professional and competent and the services are up to the stars. English is mostly OK but pointing and smiles gets through where it wasn’t. Situated overlooking Sun Island and the northern (bei) arm of Songhua River in the newly developed Songbei area it is some way removed from Harbin’s mainstream but the higher river view rooms have a spectacular outlook towards the old city and the immediate surroundings are relatively quiet.

The good: our (2312) Panoramic Riverview king was as advertised. The room was reasonably spacious, clean, quiet and comfortable. Everything expected was there and it all worked as expected. The king bed was firm but comfortable, the linens fresh and crisp and there were enough pillows for each of us to find our preference.
The décor is a restrained but elegant 5-star hotel vanilla and there was almost none of the poor fit and finish – and even poorer repairs – that so characterise many Chinese mainland hotels, regardless of the stars.
The bathroom was roomy, well-appointed, with good lighting and everything worked as expected. The included wifi worked well on all our devices. Our booking made no mention of breakfast which apparently was included – a very nice buffet spread with a good selection of quality Chinese and western dishes.

The not so good: common to many hotels in China, the air-conditioning has a neat little control panel that lets you adjust the environmental settings to your heart’s content but, in the end, you can only control the fan speed and the AC output is whatever has been decided by a higher authority. During our late September stay they decided to turn it off which left our room disagreeably warm for much of our stay. This is the first Shangri-La hotel that we have had this experience in and it was both annoying and disappointing. There is also no window option here – the panorama is beheld through a solid glass wall.

Room Tip: Riverview rooms are preferable and the view across Sun Island in winter would be spectacular – as much as the southern sun would be welcome

Although we have stayed in Harbin many times before, this is a new Hotel and it was the first time we have stayed here. And I must say what a delightful time we had. Its is a excellent location on the north bank of the river, with easy access to airport and the centre of town, and all the major attractions.
We stayed in the Horizon Club in a suite overlooking the river, the room was spacious, clean and very comfortable, and the room facilities perfect. However this is a new Hotel and not without its "teething" problems, but there was one particular member of staff, an assistant Front Office Manager, Holly Qu, who was absolutely brilliant. Any and every problem was sorted in a friendly, helpful and totally professional way. She is a credit to the Hotel.
The hotel also has a really good bar "De Drunken Pig", it is really good, maybe one of the best bars in Harbin. Its a great place to relax, with entertainment. The manager, Bear Li, is a real character, does a great job and makes the place come alive.
This really is a good hotel to stay if you are in Harbin, but if I had a small criticism it would be the restaurants, particularly the Shanghai Kitchen. The service from the junior staff is dreadfully slow and inattentive when it is busy. I think they are inexperienced and it will get better with time, hopefully.
The Horizon Club is superb, very efficient, with very helpful staff, particularly Nicole Shang who was a great help.
We thoroughly recommend this Hotel, and we are looking forward to staying there again on or next visit to Harbin.

Room Tip: a Horizon Club room or suite... with views of the river

Stayed there near the end of June - during the trip to Harbin.
The hotel was quiet, which was great
The lobby decor was poorly made for this level
The mattress was too soft
Food was average, but pricey
