We stayed in a beachfront room that was decent inside (no wow factor), but I didn't like how you had to go down from floor level at the main entrance, down these dark damp stairs where mosquitos liked to linger. The front garden was similar a bit overgrown. The lounge chairs right outside facing the beach were nice, but the plung pool was filthy and we never used it. Again, it looked mosquito infested.

The beach was decent. Sand wasn't the nicest and the waves were too strong to swim in, but the kids played in the sand and didn't complain.

We spent most our time in the pools which were really nice! The baby pool had sand on the bottom and was nice and shallow so our toddlers could play safely. My only complaint is that the food served by the pool was not very good. You had to get dressed and go into one of the restaurants for a decent meal.

The food at the Chinese restaurant was amazing! The beach restaurant's food was not that great, but the atmosphere made up for it. The noodle bar was yummy, but be warned the portions are HUGE. You will feel a bit obligated to finish all those noodles they give you, or you could easily share a bowl with someone else. Food was slightly pricey but to be expected at a nice resort.

English was so-so, but they tried so hard to please that it made up for it!

I had a wonderful 3 night stay with my daughter. We were warmly welcomed on arrival (and farewelled on departure) by the General Manager and other staff, all of whom were friendly and engaging.
The check in was good, although the first room we were assigned reeked of smoke. They kindly upgraded us and our new room was fine. Quite spacious and comfortable.
The resort is a great size - golf carts to get around on makes life easier! The main pool was beautiful. My daughter loved the inflatable pool toys and the range of beach toys provided. Food service by the pool was very slow (as food has to be ordered and collected from the main restaurant) and the menu choice was also limited. Breakfast very much caters to the Chinese palette (understandable given the Chinese are a major proportion of the hotel's guests). However my daughter wanted a certain type of cereal that was only available on the first day of our stay. When the Restaurant Manager found out, he went out of his way to personally shop for it! Amazing! Overall, the staff were very keen to serve you. English was not great for many of them but their desire to please was 100%. My experience at the Spa was sensational - probably one of the best massages I have had in a very long time. The gym is also well equipped and a nice environment to work out in. Also well planned, in that the gym is in the same building as the kids club so you can drop off and pick up easily!
I was very impressed with the high visibility of the General Manager and his senior staff. They went out of their way to say 'hello' and checked in with each day. It was a very nice touch and lacking in many hotels these days.
Overall, I was very impressed, so we will definitely be going back! Only an hour from Hong Kong so a perfect long weekend escape! (Pity about having to have a Chinese visa!!)

Room Tip: Don't take the standard garden room - they are 'under' the building and quite dark. Wort...

Mandarin Oriental property's are some of our favourite's, but having been to the Ritz Carlton sanya previously and experienced really terrible service (even by china standards) and a resort devoid of much atmosphere, our expectations weren't too high for this trip. Pleasantly though our Mandarin Oriental experience was absolutely fantastic. The resort is beautiful - really secluded and tropical, stunning grounds, fantastic pools with something for everyone, beautiful beach (though not your typical sandy one), great kids club, and reasonable food (mian mian noodles is the best). The rooms are very nice and the service excellent. whilst there were a few very minor issues with language, the staff are genuinely always trying to do everything perfectly for you and resolve everything quickly. We stayed for four nights as a getaway from shanghai and loved it. For anyone debating the ritz vs mo - the ritz has slightly better breakfast, maybe rooms (if so only just), and if you want sand their beach might be better for you, though i actually preferred the beach at the mo. as for the mandarin oriental, the design of the resort, the atmosphere, the pools, location, service, and overall experience of the resort absolutely kills the ritz carlton.

We wanted to get a away from Shanghai for 3 days with the requirement of a clear blue sky, beach, good food, good service and a place for the children to be entertained while we relax. The Mandarin Oriental Sanya delivered on all fronts. I had my doubts after reading reviews and yes there were some small hiccups although they were all solved with minimum of fuss and in one instance a complimentary bottle of champagne. ( we asked for the room to be cleaned while at breakfast and only the bed was made – on enquiry the hotel runner was sent to do the job vs housekeeping)…anyway it was sorted quickly and efficiently. We had a room with steps to a lawn and then the beach. This was like having your own luxury beach house. It was certainly worth the extra $$ compared to the standard suits which are a little work away. The facilities were excellent. All you would want and expect in a resort of this price and rating. 3 great pools, fantastic bar with view of bay, well equipped Kids Club with great staff. A lot of space and gardens with which to explore. The Mandarin Oriental delivered on the details in terms of rooms, well equipped and of high quality. I’d give the food 8 out of 10, good quality – more than enough variety. (does not beat the breakfast at St. Regis Bali yet which is out benchmark of 10). The room service menu I think was also reasonably priced. (this is important as you don’t really want to leave the resort – to be honest in our 3 days we left the resort for only 3 hrs….not so impressed with Sanya. Although our purpose was to relax not tour. The staff really went out of their way to make a difference to the stay, friendly and could not do enough to help. Great with Children – especially when my Son scrapped his leg twice while running by the pool….The children did not want to leave. Thanks to Apple, Seven, the Duty Manager on duty April 21 and all others who made our trip exactly what we were looking for. Will definitely return. (PS. The beach was peaceful and natural….we don’t usually swim in the beach. Yalong bay has a great beach although there are millions of people to share it with unlike MO which is all yours.) If you want a quiet quality vacation by the beach while still in China definitely consider the Mandarin Oriental). Be prepared though to spend on food while there. You can feed a family of 4 on about 400RMB with room service.

Room Tip: Select room near beech and pool if with children vs ocean view rooms. worth the extra

The MO Sanya is one of my favorite resort to escape from HK.
The rooms are big and tidy and the bed is good.
Even if you are far from the lobby, the little buggy will come and pick you up!
The service is very good even if the staff is not fluent english. The Fresh restaurant is fantastic and i recommend the oysters and the lemon tart is just amazing!
The chinese restaurant is also good and the breakfast has a huge choice of dishes.
One of the best thing is the SPA, that was awarded in 2009 i think.
Finally the staff is very nice and the swimming pools are great (the tranquillo is the nicest one to have a nap).

First of all: you are in China and the staff will not talk to you in a fluent English!! C'mon!! Compared to other hotels I've ever stayed in in China, the staff was quite good.

The hotel is amazing. There are 3 or 4 HUGE swimming pools and believe me: although you are in China, the pool is almost all yours...there are plenty of spaces for you to enjoy your time without the need to be near anyone. And there is also an exclusive pool for adults.

We stayed in a villa with a garden and a plunge pool, but I confess I got a little bit disappointed with the pool as it look liked more as a sink than a pool, but it's ok....

The beach is the weakest point of the hotel: the water is clear blue but it is kind of a private and secluded beach made of stones so you have only one or two small areas where you can access the sea. But no one can deny that it is beautiful!!!

In a nutshell, Mandarin Oriental exceeded my expectations and I'm willing to come back any time soon.

Room Tip: Do not go for a room with a plunge pool....actually it is not a pool, its a small tank with water. M...

After living in China for 4 years, my standards for service has been "harmonized". As many have said, the hotel and grounds were great. We used all the pools, fitness center and spa. Exactly what you would expect from the brand. Some reviewers have commented that the beach isn't great. I actually found it a nice change of pace. If you are reading this, you have been to better beaches than Sanya, so this beach doesn't rank with South East Asia beaches, but it was quiet and somewhat charming to see a natural beach. The service is where the proverbial wheels fall off. While the staff has a great attitude, the training is difficult. I can empathize with management regarding turnover, but 2800 RMB a night should pay for ample training. Things like cocktail service to the lounge chair took an uncomfortable amount of time, restaurants were expensive as expected but again, orders were haphazard and served in what I call the food auction. When wait staff brings entrees, they should remember who gets what. Staff talking on cell phones is unprofessional on the grounds. Finally, there is no reason to leave the resort. A trip to town will be a let down unless you are in the market for ugly shirts and plastic toys. Will we be back? Yes, Shanghai to Sanya is easy, no visas, one flight, no immigration and you can do it for a long weekend when you need to get away.

Room Tip: rooms are build like condos, we had the upper floor (versus the lower floor) seems like the upper fl...
