A very nice place in the nature. Beautiful view to sea, beach and mountains. The statue of the Guan Yin is really impressive . The place is without doubts a typical tourist spot, but despite that we liked it a lot. We came there quite late, almost before closing time so on the way back we were alone on the statue island and almost alone in the whole areal, which was amazing...and a very unusual experience in China :-)
If you decide to go there this late, the only problem is to catch the transfer back.
I think this place is worth to visit when you are nearby.

The Nanshan Buddhist Cultural Zone is about 40km from downtown Sanya and is "a unique large-scale eco-cultural tourism zone with an area of 50 square kilometers" - the largest cultural tourist attraction of its kind in China.

And it draws big crowds - dozens of tour buses in the car-park when we arrived. However, being so expansive, and being able to be transported around the complex by mini road-trains, one does not feel crowded.

No doubt, the highlight is the 108 metre statue of "Guanyin of the South Sea" - this statue has three aspects; one side faces inland and the other two face the South China Sea, representing blessing and protection by Guanyin of China and the whole world.

Nanshan Temple itself was completed in 1988 and was built to commemorate two thousand years of Buddhism in China.

The entire area is beautifully gardened, and while is now a major tourist destination attracting more and more visitors, not only from China, but from all over the world, it is also a place where people can enjoy themselves in a great tropical ecological environment with sunshine, sea and garden greenery,

I found this a wonderful place to experience the real beauty and peace and harmony of Buddhist culture in a beautiful natural environment.

HINT: My NZ passport (as proof of age) allowed me a Seniors 60+ discount upon presentation at the ticket booth (the only time this happened in China).

This supposedly a place of worship has been managed as a "theme park", if you insist of visiting, bring loads of cash as the entrance fee will cost you RMB150 during peak season. A visit inside the Goddess of Mercy statue will cost another RMB80! Other "carefully" planned activities throughout the park will cost money as well, so be careful.

There was a stall where you can buy fishes or turtles and release them to the sea, very noble but this will cost you few hundreds or RMB70K for the biggest turtle. I found this act is very disgusting!!

Anyway, seeing how this place is being operated, we left in a hurry and will not come back...

Nice place but build just as a tourist attraction so depends what you like and what you're looking for while traveling. We spent there some time but in overall weren't really impressed with the commercial site of it as spiritual aspect is hardly seen. It is all about making money.

It is like the Lourdes, Fatima, or any other so called religious (are they?) Destinations created for the sole reason of making good money from tourists offering nothing in return. The place lacks any cultural aspects of Buddhism apart some monks going around with the rosary and ripping off gullible tourists with special chants in exchange for good money. There is a big commercial area selling articles pretentiously religious when they are at unbelievable high prices. There are also two prices for everything from the entry tickets to the souvenirs. The highest for foreigners. Our tour guide was very annoyed that nobody of us bought anything at all given any souvenir on display could be bought in Santa at 80% less. There is no professional touring in any foreign language and no western toilets. The one available are very filthy. All drinks are sold 2-4 times higher than in the city. As experienced travellers we stuffed ourselves with drinks and snacks from the city. We rent a car through some friends to get there. Some taxi asked even 800 two ways and we were supposed to follow the taxi driver timetable. Luckily we had same Expat friend who allow us to rent his car so the tour guide we hired had to follow our schedule. Nothing to do in nanshan temple apart some photos under the big Buddha statue to show family and friends to have been there so to gain a lot of face. It is not enough to build an open space place a statue just to copy Rio de Janeiro and think to ha created a cool destination. Tourism management destination require a more broad minded and comprehensive understanding is the pretense is to claim sanya as international tourism place. There must be a more international approach and more professional tourist oriented management and customer service. I hope important improvement for the near future
