“A joke for the price.”
Reviewed June 19, 2013

My girlfriend and I stayed in Sanya for a week. We split our time between the Renaissance at HaiTangWan and Mangrove at Yalong Bay.

My opinion of this hotel might be different if we had stayed here first but after staying at the Renaissance (which was cheaper) this place is a joke.

The room is small and feels cramped. Doesn't feel luxurious at all. The soap dispensers come out of a box that looks like it belongs in a diner bathroom. The mattress was terribly hard (not firm because I prefer firm mattresses). The chair had spots and stains all over it. The shower (a tub) is elevated and makes it awkward to enter/exit.

There is an outdoor shower, which is cool, but really not necessary. That's really the only positive thing I have to say about the rooms.

In terms of food there is a breakfast buffet (7am-1030am) that is pretty mediocre. They have Chinese and western items but the western food is pathetic. There was "French toast" one morning and it was just two pieces of dry white bread held together by something sweet and fried. Tasted awful. There is an omelet station, which was good. The pastries were mostly bland/dry except for the croissants, which were rich and flaky. Coffee was mediocre. The bacon was underdone and way too chewy (not crispy at all). The Asian food was better and included wontons, a noodle soup station, various stir frys, rice, stews, porridge, and an assortment of steamed buns. The thing is none of it looked that appealing. It looked like a cheap buffet (I mean, it WAS a cheap buffet but it looked like no attempt to dress it up had been made).

We also ate at the hotpot restaurant, which was a joke. The cost was over 300 RMB a person (close to 400 RMB after the service charge) and the selection was dreadful. Yes, they had some fresh seafood (small crabs, live shrimp, fish) but everything else was terrible. I can't believe they can charge this price for it. We paid less for an iron-chef BBQ competition at Renaissance (4 or 5 executive chefs each with a distinct BBQ/grill station that served fresh fish, shellfish, lamb chops, prawns, ribs, chicken, etc.) that was absolutely delicious and served in a fabulous dining hall. This place was just terrible in comparison. The desserts were all awful.

The beach, however, was nice. It's quite large and there's a large area to swim/play in. There are also places to lie down and it is quite a nice view. However, the service on the beach is lacking. At Renaissance there were attendants there who would bring us chilled water and new towels. Here, you have to bring your own towels from your room and there is no water.

The facilities are quite dated. I really enjoy working out and enjoyed a very well-kept gym at Renaissance. Here, the gym is located in the basement and has very poor and depressing lighting. There are old weight machines and dumbbells where you have to load your mini plates on. I didn't even want to work out after seeing the place.

The pools at the hotel are large. There is even a separate swimming pool for laps but the water was way too warm. Still nice that the pool exists though.

There was no service downtown or to/from the airport. Cabs to downtown were about 60 RMB. You can also hire one of the hotel drivers for 100 RMB.

We were also placed in the wrong room for about 2 hours before reception called us and made us pack our things and move. Very inconvenient since it was late and we had been out all day. They gave us a small fruit basket as compensation. Pathetic.

I really cannot recommend this hotel for the price. It really should be half the price we paid (about $190 USD a night). Do yourself a favor and check out the Renaissance, which was a fantastic experience.

Excellent hotel, rooms, food top class, just a lack of English speakers outside of the front desk, but all in all they were very helpful
Better rooms cost significantly more, but the hill side views were very good anyway

Loved the outside shower on the balcony (enclosed of course) as well as one in the bathroom, great for when you have returned from the beach

Depends on what you expect and want. If you want a place that is geared to Western tourists and has US standards, then this is not it. The hotel caters almost exclusively to Chinese internal tourists, and so the food etc is focussed on their expectations. The wifi is quite good and fast and the TV has English channels. There is no airconditioned lobby or space to sit and have coffee or do work. The rooms are generic, and smallish - but clean. Bed seems needlessly firm and you only get two pillows. My room had the shower in a very deep bath - not easy to step out of.

The beach is stunning, but you can only swim in a small roped off area. The pool seems clean, but gets crowded. This would be a 3 star Florida holiday hotel - maybe a good Holiday Inn, but not a Hyatt/Omni etc. Not bad, just not great if you want a break from Chinese food etc. I was booked into the hotel by my Chinese hosts; I would have preferred to stay at a European chain though - I really needed an airconditioned meeting space to work and have coffee and this hotel does not have it. Somebody else's review said, "typical Chinese Tourist Hotel" - that is an apt description.

My husband and I are living in China and we have travelled in Thailand and Malaysia best beaches so when I booked that resort, we had low expectations before going to Hainan. We booked the garden-view as we were outside the entire day anyway.

PROS: Balinese style resort which makes it much more exotic and pleasant than those high –class hotel chains, clean and spacious room, friendly staff, excellent service , nice garden with lots of trees, excellent Thai food, excellent Chinese-style steamed fish, perfect clean beach with turquoise water, comfortable beach chairs, water slide, kids friendly (even if we have no kids) and above all nobody to bother us. We must have gone during the lowest season as there was no crowd, almost nobody on the beach.. that obviously helped to enjoy our stay
the long swimming-pool has a dark blue color that does not make it so attractive, and it had lots of leaves in it as it is surrounded by trees. No jaccuzzi like the neighbor MGM Hotel. But once inside, it was actually nice.

CONS: Although the breakfast has a large selection, it may be more suitable for the Chinese, the western pastries/breads could be better. The fruits were nice though..

We walked along the beach to check the outside of the other hotels (MGM, Hilton, Marriott), I found Mangrove less “luxurious” but I have no regret as I enjoyed our Balinese style for that price. Regarding the beach, Mangrove is as nice as those hotels.
I highly recommend to book through Agoda, because Mangrove’s own website rates are overpriced.
We speak Chinese so we faced no issues with the staff. We came only for a w-e just to enjoy swimming and sunbathing, we did not do sightseeing.

Even though they call themselves 5 star hotel, it is nothing like it. The price was ridiculous (300 US dollars/room), but it was high season when I went so I kind of have not much of problem. But everything of this hotel is a disappointment. The pool was SO dirty, filled with sand and leaves. No body cleaned it. There was no towel service either, which I have never seen in any 5 star hotels. Breakfast was not good quality either, no service at all at the breakfast buffet. The worst is their housekeeping. They forgot to refill my instant coffee, and didn't give me a shower towel!

Sanya beach is nice, but if I had the choice, I'd rather go to Phuket where the beach may be less nice but service, food and people are super great.

We had an amazing time at the Mangrove Tree Resort in Dec 2011. It was our second stay there, the previous one was in Dec 2010. We hugely enjoyed both trips. The breakfast buffet is very good, as are the hammocks in the garden, the heated pool in the evening, the water slide, and, of course, the beach itself! Just the coconuts sold by hotel staff on the beach are completely overpriced - are are the meals in the hotel restaurants. A ten-minute walk along the beach (turn left facing the sea) will lead you to the publicly accessible beach area where the coconuts are a third of the price and you can sample freshly grilled fish and seafood!
The hotel is amazing though, well worth a stay!

Room Tip: Book a garden view room - cheaper and quieter than the rooms with sea view which overlook the pool

Reviewed August 17, 2011

Following a visit to Beijing (see review), my boyfriend, Dave, and I, Natasha decided to visit the island of Hainan in the South China Sea for 7 nights in July.

Based on the recommendations of our local travel agent, Jenny at FreeSanya.com we chose the Mangrove Tree Resort at Yalong Bay near Sanya. This was marketed as a luxury, international, 5 star resort. In reality this resort turned out to be only suitable for and geared towards Chinese tourists, not western tourists.

Upon arrival we were impressed with the beach, hotel and grounds in their Balinese style. We booked an Elegant Seaview Room. We were assigned a room on the right side of the hotel. We noticed a huge hotel construction site next door and voiced our concern but were assured that there was absolutely no construction noise. The room was good sized, nicely furnished with a small sitting area with a couch and table, and a nice bathroom. There was also a balcony with partial sea view.

Being late in the day, after many hours of travel, we were anxious to get some well-needed rest. First negative surprise was that the bed was Chinese style, with no soft mattress. You were basically sleeping on a board! To say it was uncomfortable would be a major understatement.

Second surprise came at the crack of dawn when we were awakened by screeching construction noise.

We went to the front desk and requested another room, and were told to stop by after breakfast.

Breakfast buffet that was included in the price consisted of many Chinese items, but lacked international options. Food wasn’t very good and service was terrible.

When we went back to the front desk we were happy to find out that we were generously upgraded to a 1 bedroom suite, on a high floor on the opposite side of the resort, away from the construction. The suite was lovely and huge, consisting of a spacious living room, bedroom, bathroom, dressing room, 2 large balconies and walls of glass with vast, panoramic views of hotel grounds, beach and sea.

After moving in, we went out to enjoy the beach and pool for a few fun-filled hours. When we returned to our room in the early afternoon we shocked at the temperature. It was boiling hot even though all the Air Conditioning units in the suite have been turned on to maximum levels.

Once again, we called the front desk, and many calls and technician visits later, and our entire afternoon and evening wasted, the A/C wasn’t fixed. The room was unbearably hot, and it was obvious that there was no way we could spend 6 more nights in this environment. Hotel management informed us that local tourists were not concerned with the A/C and didn’t mind the heat.

So, after the second sleepless night on a bed made of boards in unbearable heat, we decided to check out of the Mangrove Tree Resort and move to the Ritz Carlton (see review). Fortunately, our local travel agent was able to arrange for checkout with no penalty and the remainder of our pre-paid amount was applied towards the Ritz.

Even though it is pretty to look at, we do not recommend the Mangrove Tree Resort for western travellers

Room Tip: Poor A/C, horrible beds, bad food, bad service, nice beach
