“Best Experience in China”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

This is an amazing resort in China! I was pleasantly surprised how beautiful the resort is. It is a large resort with over 500 rooms and spread out facility. I highly recommend it if you are traveling as a couple or in a family. The breakfast had a large selection and the staff provide great service. Actually excellent service by far for China standards. (Guliane, Isabelle & the new guy from Portugal- keep up the good work.). The kids clubhouse and play ground were fantastic. Our 2 yr old really enjoyed it. It is more appropriate for ages 18 mons- 7yrs old. Very clean, helpful and attentive staff. Both Chinese and English speaking. The recreation room they have for adults was very impressive. There are pool tables, mahjong, checkers, chess... Plenty of space and seating. It's very spacious and beautiful design. The pools are absolutely amazing. Sheraton went all out on this facility with the grounds!!! We are lifetime platinum SPG members and of course have travelled a lot. I can say with confidence, this resort has the most amazing pools I've seen. Only thing I missed was pool side cocktails. There were only beers and soft drinks open pool side. We felt within China, this is one of the TOP RESORTS you will find.

Room Tip: Room 1033- massive pool suite! Fantastic!

We stayed there in March 2013 for 3 days

The place is brand new or at least feels like it. Great location along the beach, maybe it was the time of year but felt like we had the whole resort to ourselves.

Pros: Looks fantastic, all the pools (7 or 8 of them) looks 5 star and designed perfectly. The resort is huge and gets even bigger if you include the higher end sister hotel next door Royal Bergonia whose facilities you are able to utilise. Wide open spaces everywhere from the Lobby, to the hallways, to the rooms which were spectaculary large. The rooms themselves (we had 1st Floor Pool View rooms) were so very comfy and spacious, the blonde beach wood theme we had throughout the room was made the place feel very homely (if that's a word) and relaxing. A very nice warm glow to the room during the day due to the design. Huge balcony and massive bathroom with full size bath and also a seperate shower with normal and powerful rain showerheads. Heaps of things to do, bike riding, pool, table tennis, jet skiing, and those futuristic walker things you see on TV (some cost extra) Great views everywhere, green lush views of the countryside behind the hotel from the manicured elevated garden and fantastic beach views as the hotel is smack bang on a beach albeit still a 5 minute walk from the main hotel buidling to the sand because the pool area is so large. Private transfer from the airport with a chaffeur with my name on a placecard greeting us at the airport, this might depend on the package you get. Free internet also appreciated. Beautiful weather!

Cons: Haitang Bay is a developing tourism area so there are shortfalls which you will have to forgive. Food and wine were pricey for what you get and limited in range. Chefs aren't up to scratch and bar staff have much to learn. Unless you are willing to travel outside the hotel via taxi or free bus shuttle you are limited to what's on offer in the hotel where there are 5 or so restaurants and room service. Hotel staff really struggle with English with only some of the reception being okay at it, but English speaking people aren't their main guests i'm guessing.

Aside from the food and language barrier, the only other thing is the local Chinese guests, they don't have the same etiquette as the Western world so expect to be surprised at some point. I witnessed two incidents of parents encouraging their kids pee in the idyllic and landscaped folage and plants which are everywhere around the pool area (at least they didn't pee in the pool). Plus smoking is quite the norm including one gentleman who was puffing away in the gift/swim shop. Remember, we are foreigners on their territotry so we are the odd ones for listing this as a con.
Another thing is waves are very strong when were went.

Overall, if you want a place to relax with great weather and sunshine and don't mind Chinese versions of Western food or just average Chinese food it's a very good place to be.

Room Tip: 1st Floor Beach View Rooms are really nice.

Sorry, it's a beautiful resort with good (potential) hardwares but I have mixed feelings and therefore gave the first non-"excellent" review.

We stayed at this resort for 2 nights. We arrived at Sanya airport and was surprised that we had a complimentary private car transfer - I could only suppose this is at the courtesy of our travel agent as not all guests have the same. I was happy about this and got to the resort in around 40 minutes. The driver was friendly.

The resort was quite beautiful, it looked new and smelled new... but the new renovation smell could potentially be an issue if you are allergic to the chemical smell. The check-in lobby faces an ocean view and it's quite pleasant and it's not what I expected from mainland China. The hotel is also quite new, like what the other reviewers have mentioned. But the problem is, at the time I stayed in the hotel even unfinished pavements near the infinity pool, without signs warning others to mind their steps. Also when we tried to use the gym we were pointed to 3 cardio machines in the "recreational" room, with no resistance training equipment such as free weights/dumbbell and other machines. I was told that the "real" fitness room was still under construction.

Those considering to snorkel or swim at the beach... take note that Haitang Bay's current are actually quite strong and not quite suitable for small kids or people who do not swim. Though the sand is quite nice other than the occasional cigarette butts nearer to the resort.

Overall, hotel staff were not the most helpful. We are able to speak Mandarin but we still had problems as staff weren't all that helpful. I also had a feeling that they don't try their best to treat Chinese speakers well. There were times that speaking English helped (but be warned that English is not well-spoken by all hotel staff in Sanya and it takes multiple times of repeating and paraphrasing) - for example, my friend called the hotel speaking in Mandarin asking for information regarding shuttle buses from the hotel but was told there were no shuttle buses, I called again speaking English and was told that there is a shuttle bus and even booked us on one. Upon check-out, we went to the reception counter with a lady starring at the computer screen, we stood there and said we would like to check out, she abruptly yelled, in Chinese, "go somewhere else ok?".

I liked that the resort wasn't packed with people (in fact, very spacious with little people around pools and on the beach), but the services that it provide is just not up to Sheraton resorts' standards. Staff in general were very passive in providing service. Tropical resort feeling is not that well established either, i.e. there were no drink menus provided at the sun beds near pools and the beach.

Breakfast buffet area was huge, but selection is very limited and very mainland Chinese oriented. Hygiene may also be an issue as I had a weird tummy after having the breakfast and many guests in the hotel just don't know how to use utensils.

Despite all, I had good sleep in the room as it was quiet and it had my favourite Sheraton beds.

Overall, it (almost) has the Sheraton hardware in the hotel, but room for improvement is evident for many of the staff.

Room Tip: It's far from everything and taking the hotel limo (around 100 yuan) to the city might be necess...

Hotel is eight months old as of August. It's not bad at all. Clean. Everything works. The previous description really sums it up quite well. The beach is completely empty except for this hotel. Nobody will touch the pools during the day so if you are a sun lover you basically have the outdoor areas to yourself till the sun goes down at which time the locals start trickling out. Food was ok. Location is a bit out there but it appears that they have a fairly robust shuttle schedule. Great views. Again, the beach is totally private as of now. That may change in the future but now it's pretty good. 35 RMB for a cold Tsing Tao.

The rooms - fresh, good size, nice Eco feel to the furnishings lots of blonde wood and glass. Bathrooms were large and clean we had both the sea view room and moved to a sea view suite.
The sea view room was a good size with two double beds the suite was two rooms with a separate lounge, two toilets, two tv's a double balcony with couch and chairs. A huge king bed and chaise lounge lots of cupboards wardrobes etc. a fantastic room.

The pools were amazing each separate from the other it was like the architect had said tick what pools and features you like and they had ticked them all !!

Lagoon pools with sun beds on a shallow deck, private curtained cabanas, swinging chairs, round chairs, red chairs, orange chairs you name it was there. Children's pool, rooms with access to private lagoon pool, infinity edge lap pool, another smaller lagoon pool and a pool that was just one big jacuzzi

The restaurants were varied in offerings both western style and Asian the presentation of the desserts especially at In Azia were phenomenal.

Location - sure it's in a new part of Hainan but you have a free city shutte if you want to shop. If you want to eat away from the hotel then a taxi is your only choice but really you be getting something cheaper than the hotel but once you add the effort and cost of travel why bother?

A note with the shuttle it takes you to the duty free shop and you will need to get a taxi to get into Sanya it cost a couple of dollars we are happy to walk (from the Duty Free store to the main shopping area) but it was not walking distance - about 3-4 klms and remember its hot and the maps and street signs are a bit tricky unless you read mandarin. We asked the taxi to drop us at McDonalds there are a few small ones and one big one it is good a central spot to shop and a good base to meet at.

In town please note - no amex, visa etc cash or local Chinese credit cards only so be prepared to use an ATM or CTM to get cash out

Service was great staff friendly and trying hard to please. Charma and Serena were particulary helpful. My son had a cold and the staff arranged to take us the the hospital (a bit extreme but that's how it works) the hospital was like a five star resort shiny and new. It cost less than $5 US/AUS to see the Dr and the antibiotic's and additional traditional medicines cost about $8! Better than home. A staff member accompanied us to translate -Kroeger- it's was really above and beyond expectations.

The beach was clean, long sandy clean stretches good seats to enjoy the sun with six pool to choose from it was hard to find time to walk down there!

Huge resort, amazing outdoor seating, pools, restaurant choices plenty of photo opportunities with incredible back drops and great service.

Room Tip: Go for the sea view and if you are travelling with children consider the suite for extra room. The...
