Renaissance Sanya Resort & Spa
Ranked #14 of 1,347 Hotels in Sanya
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 18, 2014

We, a family of four (two daughters 12 and 16 years old), stayed at the resort already twice for a long weekend. It was love at first sight! The atmosphere when entering the huge open lobby gives you an immediate feeling of serenity. You are on vacation from the first moment and it lasts the whole time. The staff is great, very friendly and attentive. But the best part is the large pool area which is directly connected to the beautiful private beach. There are plenty of amenities to spend your time in the resort without the need to go anywhere else. Our kids loved the R'cade and the Candy Box. The Spa is first class, and the different restaurants provide excellent food for a variety of tastes - our favourite is the Red Star Cafe because of the buffet (we just missed cheese for breakfast, but they do have a great bircher muesli!). During our first long weekend we stayed at the ocean view suite - spacious, clean, excellent bed, and a view which really deserves the term "ocean view"! Second time we have rented a villa (two bedrooms, private outdoor pool with nice deck, kitchen, additional outdoor shower, large living room area) - nothing more you can wish for! What makes the resort special from our point of view is that even if it is fully booked you have the feeling of privacy, peace and quiet. The General Manager of the resort himself checked about our well being (and not only ours), and made sure all is perfect. And the same attitude of hospitality is felt from every single person of the staff! We are already making plans for another stay at the resort! By the way, we recommend to use the hotel limo airport service for peace of mind from beginning to the end. Thank you all from Renaissance Sanya Resort & Spa for unforgettable days in paradise! Family Walther from Germany, now living in Shanghai

Room Tip: We recommend the ocean view suites, or if you want more space and flexibility go for the villas.

We had a fantastic week in Renaissance Sanya. Great place, especially for families with kids. There is a spacious kid's club with different activities throughout the day, splash pad, water slides, and , of course, a nice beach! All you need for a short, but sweet vacation! Food and service were good too!

Room Tip: We had sea view suite with a large balcony. Beautiful!

The Renaissance is a very big hotel in an area that is still under development, i.e. as long as you are not planning to leave the facility it makes a nice stay (it is impossible to get a taxi and there is nothing on the area).
The rooms are nice, clean and spacious, but a bit smelly (it's apparently very wet there). The hotel has a nice garden und huge lagoon style pool in the middle plus it's own private beach.
Breakfast has a great selection of food (Western and Chinese), but quality is more on the average side for a top hotel.
We only tried the Starfish restaurant with has surprisingly good western seafood, but is a bit pricy (mains close to 200 RMB). There is also an external restaurant close to building B, which is a lit cheaper.
The SPA offers a great variety of treatments at good quality.
Overall a pleasant stay, but I not sure if this is really among the top-hotels in that area

We stayed for 5 days with 2 kids (3 and 5 years old). Had an excellent time and we really enjoyed the very nice and big pool area. The kids pool area with two water slides and some water playground is probably not so interesting for kids older than ours but we had a great time in those areas. The beach directly connected to the hotel grounds and it was almost completely empty during our visit. Lots of waves and yellow flags during our stay but good for playing around in the waves but for swimming the pool is a better choice.

Service was really excellent and friendly all the time in all areas, a little confused a few sometimes maybe (serving brewed coffee with milk as a cappuccino for instance) but always done with a smile.

The staff helped us to book a trip to the mountain areas and they were very helpful in getting everything right (getting a car with safety belts is not always easy in China).

The only thing we did not like was the strong smell of damp in our garden view room on second floor. We got it exchanged for a mountain view room on 8th floor instead and it had no smell problem.

We spent 3 nights in late November with friends. The resort is modern, huge and relatively new. It is located in Haitang Bay which is the less developed...for now and while this limits you to Hotel in terms of true restuarant food [we did have a wonderful meal at a local beach cafe 300 meters down the beach one evening...worth the walk ...turn left ...not on Trip Advsior.:) ] you have enough options.
The hotels is a real playground for children with lots of things to do,from bowling allies, ping pong, and of course all the pools. Sadly the Spa was a dissapointment as while the hotel was not full they has clealry given staff time off as getting appointments was a struggle.
The rooms were great and you must get a sea view room with a blacony. [go for floors 6 upwards if you can as get better view of the sea] .
The staff battled a bit with english at times but were so keen to learn and it was a joy to see their enthusiasm. It was only an issue if you wanted something that was not on the menu and then they would call a manager so it was not the end of the world. A very pleasant stay and well worth a visit if looking to a relaxing time at the beach.

Room Tip: Get a sea view with balcony and on floor 6 or 7

My wife and I stayed here for 2 nights in December 2013. I'll try to provide an objective review here with photos that I took with my cell phone.

OVERALL. The place is very good for relaxation, e.g. spending an afternoon at the beach. The weather in Sanya in December is like summer - around 25 degrees Celsius. Very comfortable. The resort property is very enormous, and it has a feeling of resort because floors of public areas are built with some fine stones, not carpet. Because the resort is located in a newly developed area of Haitang Bay, it is less crowded, but it also confines you to do and eat everything in the resort. Thanks to the resort's different restaurants and facilities, you can find yourself doing a lot of things in a 3-day stay. If shopping and sightseeing is your interest, perhaps this is not the place for you.

LOCATION. The location is around 35 minutes of taxi/cab from the airport. The culture of those taxi drivers is to negotiate the fare with you, instead of using its meters. They will start by asking you to pay RMB 200, but it is easily talked to RMB 160. The resort's free shuttle will take about 1.5 hour because it will make a stop in the city first, and the shuttle's schedule is rather limited (see the shuttle schedule on the resort's website). This resort is in a relatively newly developed area, namely Haitang Bay, which is less crowded than those older resorts in Yalong Bay. Because this place is less crowded, you can see from my photos that the beaches don't have much people, and the beach benches are readily available for use.

ROOM. The room is very spacious, which comes with shower stall with door and bath tub (so steam won't wet the whole bathroom). The room has a coffee machine (see photo). Wifi normally requires a fee, but if you ask to become Marriott's member, you can enjoy free in-room wifi. (Wifi is free in the lobby, restaurants, and spa.). Most rooms come with the balcony. I recommend rooms that faces the ocean (see my photos). Lots of privacy, no noises from other rooms. The room comes with 2 universal sockets, so you don't even need to bring your universal adaptors. There are reviews in Tripadvisors that the place is dirty. My friend's room has a gum on the bathtub, but was cleaned immediately upon calling the concierge. Also some paintings on the wall has molds, probably because the place is too humid all year around, but it's OK because you won't look at paintings all the time. The linen cover of the balcony's couch might be dirty, which can be understood, as it is placed outdoor in the balcony. Be sure to call the concierge to help clean or provide towels to cover the couch, because if you come here to relax, you will like to spend a lot of time in the balcony, sitting on the couch.

SERVICE. I have a few experiences calling for staff services in my room, which is to my satisfaction. 1. The coffee machine couldn't brew. I called the concierge, and they sent a staff over here within 5 minutes. After a preliminary checking, which cannot resolve the issue, the staff called in her supervisor to come check. The supervisor arrived in another 15 minutes, and he tried it too, and replaced my coffee machine in another 5 minutes. 2. At 2 a.m., I felt that the room is stuffy and hot. I tried to figure out with the room's air conditioner's control panel, but the symbols on the panel are difficult to understand. I called the concierge, and they dispatched a guy with a ladder in 3 minutes. The guy climbed up and opened the ceiling and did some fixing, and then he proceeded to the vent, climbed up again, and tried by his hand and said "there's wind now" (in Chinese). 3. The other night, at 9:30 p.m., I tell concierge that I will now go to drink at the resort's bar and will return to my room at 10:45p.m., and I wanted the turndown service with hot water filled in the bathtub by the time I'm back . This is done. Water is hot when I return to my room. Overall, I'm very happy with their service.

RESORT FACILITIES. This resort is enormous. Many many pools, with different depths, for children and for adults. The beach is exclusively for this resort. Both the beach and pools have plenty of benches for you to lie down. Many booths around with attendants for you to borrow towels for drying yourself after swimming, or to cover the beach benches before you use them (to get towels, you need to write down your room number and sign; if you do not return these towels, you'll be charged for the penalty.) The spa facility is good. The spa menu shows a variety of spa treatments, massages, facials and body scrubs etc. The changing room is actually available for everyone's use (i.e. not just for the spa patrons). Even you have checked out the resort, you can still use their changing room to change into your swimwear and borrow their bathrobe, store your original clothes/shoes in their password-lockers, and still walk away to use the pools and beaches (of course, come back to return the bathrobes, take a shower, change back to your clothes and leave for airport). You can also use the changing room's sauna room, steam room, and the heated pool for free.

FOOD. These are 3 restaurants and 1 lobby bar, and 1 pool-side bar (see photos). The buffet breakfast (which is included in our stay) has many many things to eat. They even have danish rolls (see photos). You can see them baking croissants. Salad, Chinese congee, harsh browns, egg benedicts, sausages, chinese noodles are available. Orange juice, mango juice, water melon juice, and more. Because there are no restaurants outside and nearby the resort, guests need to rely on the resort's restaurants. Other than the buffet, the restaurants do serve individual dishes, such as western and Chinese dishes. The in-room food are priced around the same as those in the restaurant. In-room food orders do really arrive within 45 minutes, as stated on the menu. Generally, I felt I've got enough choices of food, and I don't feel bored for the food.

LANGUAGE. If you know Chinese, it will be best. But from my observation, I do see non-Chinese-speaking guests talking to staff without any problem.

In conclusion, it would say that if the hotel maintenance could be done better, it will be perfect. However, to be realistic, given this enormous size of the property, guests generally can understand some minor hiccups, and they do enough the environment here very much.

Room Tip: Mention that you want a room that faces the ocean. Those on the ground floor cannot see the ocean...

It was amazing family holiday experience, we have been talking about Sanya for a while and once we were there it was amazing experience. Resort facilities i.e. Restaurants, kids facilities, rooms were amazing. Very big and widely spread swimming pool was very good for kids. And, not to miss Spa facilities which resort carries in its name was amazing.
Overall it was 5* experience.

Room Tip: Tower B rooms facing sea are ideal.
