“Truly the BEST place to stay in China !”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

My family and I miraculously carved out the perfect time to visit Renaissance Sanya Resort and Spa for 6 nights in June 2013.

We arrived at the resort around Midnight due to airline delay. The taxi ride from Sanya Airport to the resort took 47 minutes and cost us 145 RMB ($23.54 US) for a ~46 km trip (~28.58 miles). We were in awe driving up to the gorgeous resort viewing the modern asian style architecture, the serene entrance fountains, and the golden dragon globe in the center of the tall marble/wood columns in the beautiful high ceiling lobby.

The two service staff members were very polite with us and generously upgraded us from our purchased Deluxe Ocean View guest room ( 59 sqm / 635 sqft ) to the Grand Ocean Suite ( 99 sqm / 1,065 sqft ) in building (D) which is closest to the beach ! They also gave us free WiFi internet since we were Marriott members. What a great way to brighten up our late night arrival !!!

The Room:

This Grand Ocean Suite was the largest, best layout, and most beautiful hotel/resort room we ever stayed in all our world travel!

1. This suite contained

1.1. A large balcony with 2 cozy couches ,2 chairs, and 2 coffee tables overlooking the beautiful beach and South China Sea that is a very short walk away (~45 meters / ~147 feet).

2. Two seemingly soundproof rooms with individual air condition control and access to the large balcony

2.1. The first room (living room) had a small bathroom, a closet, a mini refrigerator with dishes/glasses, a round table with 4 chairs, a long "L" shaped couch, a ~94 cm (~37 inches) LCD TV, computer desk (with almost all world power inputs, USB, HDMI, Ethernet, etc. connections), and was large enough to easily put in a rollaway bed & a crib with plenty of room to spare.

2.2. The second room had a firm but heavenly comfortable King bed, a ~94 cm (~37 inches) LCD TV, a walk-in closet with a safe, and a large bathroom (with 2 sinks, a free-standing large bathtub, a separate shower with 2 types of spray jets, and a toilet).

A family of 2 adults and 2 young children had such an awesome time in this suite relaxing in the large balcony, living room, and bedroom! it was cool, very peaceful, very comfortable, and luxurious ! It literally had everything we could ever need (including 2 free water bottles every day) !

The service was EXCELLENT at Renaissance ! They were very helpful when we called the front desk for many different types of requests. They gave us fresh fruit on our first day and when they found out my daughter's birthday they made a free pineapple birthday cake with fresh fruit as toppings for her without us asking ! She was so happy to see the cake in our room after a long swim that was specially made for her on the day of her birthday! Thank you Renaissance for being so considerate ,kind, and gracious !

The Breakfast Buffet:

The breakfast buffet at the Red Star Cafe was better than any 5 star resort in Hawaii we visited and almost as good as the Marriott Yalong Bay buffet in Sanya. It was a very large high ceiling red themed room and had many food sections separated by large dark glass walls. The food was delicious and there was a vast selection to satisfy any hungry stomach. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was very comfortable. The following is a brief description of all the sections I remember.

1. Cereal section

1.1. Contained common types of cereals , milk, and some meat and cheese choices.

2. Bakery section

2.1. Contained many types of bread, muffins, and other delicious pastries

3. Dim sum section

3.1. Contained typical dim sum items like jiao zi (gyoza/potstickers), steamed corn, steamed shao mai, steamed pork, steamed sweet black rice snack, etc., and warm soy milk or cow milk.

4. Soup section

4.1. Contained different types of vegetables, different types of meats (chicken, pork, fish sticks, etc.), and different types of noodles to have the chef cook for you once you pick all the items.

5. Pancake/Waffle section

5.1. Contained different types of pancakes, waffles, and toppings to put together.

6. Congee (porridge) section

6.1. Contained several different types of congees and toppings and even an oatmeal pot.

7. Egg section

7.1. Contained fried eggs, boiled eggs, eggs benedict, made-to-order eggs, potatoes, sausages, bacon, and baked tomatoes

8. Fried section

8.1. Contained fried rice, fried noodles, fried vegetables, etc.

9. Juice and Fruit section

9.1. Contained Watermelon juice, Carrot/Apple juice, Orange juice, Pineapple juice, Mango juice, Coconut juice, Apples, Oranges, and Pears.

The Lagoon Pools:

This was our absolute favorite place in the resort to hang out for several hours each day and we easily found open lounge chairs and non-crowded areas. In fact, for several days we almost felt completely alone in the whole lagoon. There was a Mercedes Benz fleet sales conference for 3 days during our stay and still felt the lagoon was not crowded.

The humongous and beautiful 10,000 sqm (~108,000 sqft) lagoon pool is so well designed it has at least 27 available areas in the lagoon to hang out (including non-heated jacuzzis, children slide area, and lap pool). So there are plenty of places to play with children and plenty of places to find a romantic area to relax with your loved one.

1. The entire lagoon pool is a maximum of ~1.2 meters deep (~3.94 feet).

1.1. So non-swimming adults and non-swimming taller children can have fun here.

2. There are a lot of tropical plants placed all around the lagoon which makes it very peaceful and seem secluded in some areas.

3. There is a lap pool near the beach and near the last building in Tower B.

4. Near the lap pool, there are 2 children slides in a pool area that is only about 46 cm deep (~1.5 feet).

5. Next to the children slides area there is a splash fountain area for the children. The water here is very shallow at about 15 cm (~6 inches). To memory there are about 6 children water fountain/sprinklers to play under. The handle that turns on all the sprinklers is at the front of the area.

6. There are about 9 non-heated jacuzzis throughout the lagoon pool. The children loved playing in here because of the air jets and the square you sit in is shallow enough (~61 cm / ~2 feet) for them to stand in.

7. The ice cold water bottles that the service staff hand out are perfect on the very hot days.

8. We had a lot of fun using our inflatable water vessels and saw many creative ones too. Next time we will bring a tiny children's raft with oar as that looked real fun for the children.

9. The night swimming was incredible here and our children just loved it ! Most of the lagoon pool had good lighting and several areas had tiny lights at the bottom of the pool.

9.1. I would actually choose the later swimming time next visit as it felt good to not have to deal with the hot sun beating down on us.

The Beach:

The large private beach area was very beautiful, peaceful, clean, comfortable, and there were so many free/open beach cabanas and lounge chairs available !

1. There were football/soccer goals and a volleyball net on the beach for many people to play.
2. There were hardly any people on the beach every day we were there.
3. Our children had a blast building sand castles and I even chased a few waves.
4. However, the service staff would not let anyone go swimming that I assume was due to the amount of jelly fish and strong eddy currents in the South China Sea.
5. At night time, there was plenty of light near the center of the beach so children/adults could still play

Suggestions for the hotel:

1. The landscape around the resort is very beautiful but has very few flowers. Please review other island hotel landscapes like the Four Seasons Resort Maui or Grand Wailea (Waldorf Astoria Resort) in Maui, Hawaii to see how this landscape can be improved.

2. We enjoyed the peace and quiet we had in the lagoon pool area but it would have been greatly appreciated if the hotel staff came by more often to offer beverages or even snacks. We only had service staff approach us once during our 6 night stay at the lagoon pool and we swam every day for several hours. I am sure there would be greater revenue each day if staff came out more often.

3. It would have been nice to have a few adult slides and at least one waterfall in the lagoon pool that swimmers could use or pass by. The Grand Wailea (Waldorf Astoria Resort) in Maui, Hawaii had a great design for this and all the guests had such a great time using them !

4. The red flag with letters stating "NO SWIMMING" on the beach was up every day during our stay. Since you have a marked off area in the South China Sea where people can potentially swim already then please try to make that area more safe so people can actually use it. Also, it would help if you could explain to customers why no swimming is allowed with your red flag put up all over the beach.

Overall, we had an incredible time and this is truly our favorite place amongst all China cities and islands we have visited because it excelled in every area that was important to us (excellent service, excellent room, excellent lagoon pool, great beach, beautiful resort, and good food) ! We will definitely be back in the future since we no longer have the urge to go to Hawaii with a great resort like Renaissance.

General Tips:

1. Don't trust website www.weather.com for the true weather forecast in this Haitang Bay area. Please call the hotel local phone number (86-898-3885 8888) to find out the real weather outlook. We would have not made our trip if we only relied on www.weather.com because it said it was 60-80% t-storms/rain everyday. In fact only 1 day out of the 6 nights was partly rainy.

2. Please note that Taxi drivers generally don't like to ride here because this Haitang Bay resort is so far away from Sanya downtown (~40 km or 25 miles) so they might charge you extra (or off meter charge) just to drive there.

3. There is a free shuttle bus to/from the airport to/from the Renaissance resort that you can reserve if you can depart at one of their 3 scheduled estimated time departures (ETD). I heard you can use these same shuttles for going downtown Sanya which would provide a much cheaper option than paying private car/taxi. FYI I attached a picture of the complete schedule to this review.

3.1. Renaissance to the Sanya airport reported in military time
3.1.1. ETD 1100, 1515, 2000
3.1.2. ETA 1315, 1700, 2130

3.2. Airport (look for Renaissance bus at Domestic Arrival Hall in Bus Parking area) to Renaissance.

3.2.1. ETD 1330, 1715, 2150
3.2.2. ETA 1500, 1930, 2320

4. If you are going to get an ocean view room and don't mind a long walk to the lobby the best view would be from either building D or building B since they are closest to the beach and you can easily hear the ocean brushing up against the sand.

4.1. We were on the 5th floor and thought it was perfect height.

5. If you are going to the pool please stop by any of the towel stations to get your towels before picking a lounge chair since the staff may not come by for a while and it is the best way to reserve your chairs.

5.1. Also ask for the free ice cold water bottles to save when you are thirsty.

6. You can get air for your inflatable water tubes/vessels by talking to any of the towel stations near the pool.

7. I found out why a lot of Chinese were not at the lagoon pool during the early day time. Most people came much later in the day.

7.1. I also felt that the best time to come to the lagoon pool on really hot days was around 4pm. This allowed us to avoid the very hot sun and avoid the worry that our children would get sunburned. It felt so good to play in the sand or lagoon pool at this cooler time.

8. If you don't feel like spending the high prices of resort restaurants for lunch/dinner and can speak/read Chinese (mandarin) then you can visit the non-Marriott "Seafood Booth" restaurant near building B by beach

8.1. Need to understand Chinese writing and language to order from the menu.
8.2. There are fish tanks where you pick out your seafood that you want cooked for your meal.
8.3. They have fresh delicious seafood at least half the cost of the resort restaurant.

8.3.1. 3 seafood dishes, 1 fried noodle plate, and 1 vegetable plate cost 287 RMB ($46.60 US) on one night and 259 RMB ($42.05 US) the other night This easily satisfied the stomachs of 2 adults and 2 small children.

8.4. Fresh juices were great here and only cost 28 RMB ($4.55 US) for a 2 liter pitcher. We had fresh watermelon, mango, and pineapple juice. The pineapple juice didn't taste as good as the others.

Wow, this place was incredible. The food was delicious, the facilities were very well-maintained, the staff friendly and attentive, and everything exuded luxury.

Stayed here for 2 nights (wish we stayed longer). The hotel is enormous. Just driving up driveway to the entrance was a great experience. There's a great view from the entrance where you can see through the back of the main hall and out past the palm trees onto the beach and into the ocean water. Upon arriving you feel like you've entered a new and wonderful place.

The service staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. They were always smiling in a genuine manner and seemed really interested in making your staff as pleasant as possible. This was true for all the staff we encountered throughout the resort. Very commendable.

The rooms are awesome. Very spacious and luxurious. Our room had a bathtub and a shower (with two heads). Plenty of room in the bathroom and the living area. The television was very nice and the room even included cables (like an HDMI) that was wonderful because we could watch our own movies on the HDTV after a long day at the beach. The bed was great -- perfectly firm yet not hard. I slept very well each night.

The food. Incredible. The breakfast buffet is served in a very large and spacious dining hall with a red theme (red lanterns, lighting, fixtures, furniture). The ceiling is very high and you feel very comfortable dining there. The selection was great. A noodle soup bar, salads, fresh fruits, eggs, well-cooked bacon, porridge, eggs benedict/omelets, potatoes, ham, fresh waffles/pancakes, sausages, dim sum, stir frys, pastries, donuts, basically anything you could want for breakfast. The coffee was really good as well. The juice selection was great (watermelon, coconut, mango, orange, and others I'm forgetting).

We also ate at the dinner buffet on a special evening where they invited several executive chefs to compete in a BBQ cook-off. My god, that was delicious. The chefs each had a different category of food to grill (fish, shellfish, meat, and veggies). Each station had about 4-6 unique items and a huge array of home-made sauces. Everything was incredibly delicious. Each patron was given a stone to give to the chef he/she thought was the best. Very hard to choose a winner among them. There were other items in the buffet too (wok station, noodle bar, various stews, sides, and of course dessert! I don't normally eat dessert but that night I had two large platefuls of delectable desserts. Great experience.

The beach area was the only complaint I had. There is only a small area where you could swim and there were a lot of jellyfish in the water so it was unsafe to swim even in the segregated area. The beach itself was beautiful and made for a good walk. Lots of places to lie down under the shade. Attendants even bring you chilled water bottles and fresh towels when you lie down. You can also order food/drink from the beach.

The swimming pools are huge. The whole resort has a network of pools, although I dont think any were fit for swimming laps. Very luxurious, though.

Facilities were top notch. I like to work out and enjoyed their gym very much. Towels/water bottles are free in the gym. There is a wide selection of cardio machines, weight machines, and dumbbells up to 50 lbs. There's also a machine you can use for cable flys, pull ups, or cable rows. Everything looked new and very well maintained. In the same area is the spa, whihc includes a sauna, steam room, and shower. Very relaxing with great design/atmosphere.

There are also tennis courts, badminton courts which you can reserve and rent equipment from the hotel to play. There are various activities all day you can partake in as well.

The hotel is definitely secluded (about 100 RMB cab to the city) so you'll probably be spending most of your time on the resort premises, but that's not really a bad thing. There's so much to enjoy. There is a free bus that runs to the airport and downtown several times a day if you'd like to explore the city more as well.

Overall, this is a fantastic isolated resort to have a relaxing and luxurious vacation. I would highly recommend this resort and I know I'll be back.

My second return to this fabulous resort, was even better than the first time. When we arrived, we were greeted by employees and management that recognized us by face and name. Even remembered my daughters name and what I liked to drink at breakfast.
We stayed with some friends this time in a Villa!!!!!! OMG!!!! That is all I have to say. Amazing place, I even thought about never moving out!! We had a private pool, outdoor shower, two Amazing guest suites, etc... Personal service. The Food and beverage director Michael and the General Manager Sean remembered us immediately and treated us like VIPs. The kids club and the kids pools were my daughters favorite hang out. Great place to get them out of the hot sun for a couple of hours. Always a Sanya favorite and my only choice when visiting

We stayed here for 4 nights, with another family. From the airport pick-up to the drop off was amazing, they were waiting for us after our plane was delayed 2 hours, with a bunch of flowers for our friends who were celebrating their wedding anniversary, and for me a cake in our room for my birthday. We had booked the mountain view rooms, but had been upgraded to ocean view for our stay. That on it's own, was a great surprise and welcome not to forget.
Rooms were great, with a fantastic view(level 7), spacious, nice bathroom amenities and towels, comfy beds.
Breakfast buffet was excellent with different food stations including, western, asian, bakery, fruit & juice, cereals & salads. All excellent and coffee was good.
We hung out at the pool most of the time, as our children loved swimming and using the kids pool & slides. Pools are huge, water was warm and not too deep, at the other end of the pool area they had a swim up bar, which was also great for happy hour 4-6pm, great mango cocktails!
The Starfish cafe was great, ate here a few times and they had kids menu too. We relaxed on the cabanas one afternoon which was nice and cooling, great sea breeze and enjoyed a wine and and watching the sea.
We also made use of the R-cade at the end of the day, great ten pin bowling and many more games there. Close to the R-cade was a sports bar with a pool table, and karaoke rooms, and for an afternoon ice-cream for the kids the Candy box cafe was very handy.
This place was perfect for a family fun holiday, great for the kids and Adults, there is a kids club but our girls were happy with the pool side area.
I think the Resort was quiet when we were there, and the only thing I would say was there was not enough service staff, around the pools. They had plenty of towels available and the first day we had John looking after us, he made sure we had plenty of water, but if John wasn't on no one checked us, unless we asked, it was easier and quicker to do it yourself. I think they could sell more food and drinks by the pool, if they had more staff on. Also my friend and I thought we would get a pedicure together, but we couldn't as not enough staff on at spa, so we flagged it as it would have to be one after the other, I'm sure lots of couples would want to go to the spa together.
They were the only negative points, otherwise it was the best place and we all wanted to stay longer, gym was amazing so was dinner buffet at Red star cafe.
Staff were all fantastic, not once was anyone rude they were all very helpful and wanted to meet our needs.
Thank you Renaissance we would definitely return, if we get the chance.

Room Tip: High floors offer great views, rooms were soundproof and quiet.

Magnificent buildings. Gigantic lobby. The suite we had was gorgious. They claimed they have the biggest swimming pool in China, and big it is! Room service was fast - very impressive for the gigantic size of hotel.

Just a small issue with housekeeping. They were good, but we thought it was not quite up to the Renaissance standard.

Spa was beautiful, but again the massage wasn't particularly great. Perhaps we were a bit too picky.

Breakfast was huge! But it was also messy as we were there around the same time with the conference guests. Had to queue to get in the breakfast hall!

It offered many free classes. Try Yoga, the instructor was really good. The tai-chi one was not so competent.

All in all, it was a satisfying experience :)

This resort is nearly unequaled. We are a retired international airline couple (American and Taiwanese) who have traveled our entire working lives and now do even more on our own schedule. This is our first trip to Sanya and we got lucky by finding the Renaissance Sanya......

We've been here 1 week already and don't want to leave. We will come back often and will bring our teenage children in the future. We find it very hard to believe Marriott was able to pull this off in China. The property, pool, beach, food, drinks, atmosphere, music, landscaping and especially the staff far exceed our substantial experience with 5 star Chinese hotels.

Having now met the general manager, food & beverage manager, head chef and then many discussions with the Chinese staff (in English and in Mandarin), this property has developed a really good working relationship amongst ALL the employees. The Chinese staff are ALL happy, friendly, engaging, considerate, attentive and trained to Western standards - which is very, very unusual in China, so far - even at the major city 5 star hotels. Somehow they have found the secret here.

All amenities are first rate. The rooms are quiet and cool. The sheets, towels, furnishing, electronics, WiFi, decor and layout are all perfect. The grounds are sprawling but beautiful and easy to navigate. The pool is like Lake Powell! - It seems there are little hideaways everywhere and a thousand miles of coastline! And it's all connected. Great, safe areas for young children and quiet, secluded areas for romance. The gym and spa are world class, uncrowded, cool and perfectly equipped.

The food and drink is exceptional, I honestly cannot think of one complaint! They cater to all Asian visitors and all Western/European visitors with the breakfast and dinner buffets. They have many local, native fruits, vegetables and seafood that is fresh and tasty. The bartenders are friendly, speak good English and know how to make REAL (as in complex and strong!), cocktails. Many of the drinks use the local fruits.

We now prefer Sanya now over Hawaii, although the island is not quite as beautiful and the temperature is hotter. Other than that it feels very much like being in one of the top Hawaiian beach resorts. Bring the family, it is a great resort for kids but with enough area to allow older couples to find peaceful areas. And the conference or wedding facilities are first-rate, for larger groups.

After 40+ years of traveling around this is one of the few places in the world we will come back to, especially while we live in Asia. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: We stayed on the West side (Building A), and had both a north facing and ocean facing room during ou...

We stayed in this resort in May & December 2012, & again in April this year and we are still tempted to go back again! We have 2 young kids and it is the perfect beach escape from mainland China.
The short direct daytime flight from Shanghai.
Tropical climate offering year round sunshine.
Modern, clean, contemporary resort with attractive grounds.
The massive, peaceful, clean pool. The kids pool with slides and splash area is great fun.
Beachside location with plenty of loungers, towels, complimentary water.
Good choice of restaurants, bars & even a coffee shop. Extensive kids menu and plenty of highchairs, kids plates etc.
Friendly staff
Kids play area is amazing for young kids: several different zones of indoor & outdoor play, its a fantastic place to cool off.
Tranquil Gym and spa.
We had interconnecting rooms on our most recent stay, the suites are also a good choice with kids.
My only room for improvement is regarding the cleanliness of the beach and some of the outdoor space. The poolside toilets need to be cleaned more thoroughly and the beach would benefit from a clean up especially after some rain.

Room Tip: I'd opt for a sea view.
