Renaissance Sanya Resort & Spa

I (19) went there for family vactions with my dad, mom , brother (21) , my brother's wife (23) and my boyfriend. We stayed there for 6 nights and had a lot of fun. The second we got there we knew the stay would be good. We were welcomed with flower necklaces, fresh juices and humid towels.

Every restaurant offers a big menu and nothing we tried was disapointing. We tried all of them. The morning buffet offers a lot of choices. You have asian food and american. For the lunch and dinner, there is an asian restaurant, a western restaurant or there's always the buffet at the same place where the breakfast is served (we only took the breakfast buffet so I don't know if the dinner one is good or not). There's also like a candy shop where they have amazing ice cream, candy and other stuff.

There's a lot of stuff to keep you busy on the site. You need to lay for most of them but it's fun that they offer such a big selection. We tried tennis, badminton, volley-ball (on the beach and in the pool) , lots of game in the arcade zone and even bowling. Everything was well maintained and we had no problem. You can also try to spa to relax. Me and my boyfriend took a spa package and it was professional like you expect from a Renaissance.

The pool is HUGE and there's even a section for kid.

There is also some store that have souvenirs and basic things (like sunscreen etc.).

The rooms where clean and offered a great view on the resorts.

Overhall we had great relaxing vacation. We didnt even want to go out of the resort for the week !! If I ever get a chance to go back I sure will !!!

We traveled there in feburary 2012.

We stayed for a week. Upon arrival we were upgraded to an ocean view suite since the hotel wasn't full. Check in was very quick and luggage taken to the room immediately. The suite was very large, very clean and very comfortable.
We worked with Kathy and Levi to plan our week. Nothing was too much trouble. As has been noted the resort is remote and not close to the town. The car service they offer is fantastic. Levi arranged for a car for each of our excursions. The cost was from 100 cny for a one way to Yalong Bay to 500 cny for the car for 8 hours. Very well priced for the service. We did use the bus service from the airport and as noted it is very long. We were happy to take the car service back to the airport. We used the bus to go to town but a taxi back as the return times didn't work for us. Getting a taxi back took some negotiating! If you want to take in the sites each of the areas will require taxis or car services. It was noted in a previous review that this might not be the best choice for sightseeing. If you want to see the sights as we did and you stayed in Sanya or Yalong bay transport or a car will be needed. The rain forest is not close to any of the beach areas, the hot springs are closest to Haitang Bay, monkey island (we didn't go) is not far from the hotel. If you work with the staff they will guide you on where things are located and the best way to get to them!
The breakfast was fantastic. You certainly couldn't go hungry or not find what you like! Andy was superb every morning greeting us and making sure everything was taken care of. We did meet Jeff the executive chef. He works very hard on the floor not just supervising in a back room which is why it is so superb.
The entire front desk staff - Kathy, Levi, Aslan, Lynn, Will (apologies for anyone we didn't mention) were very interested in how our day went and if we were happy with what we saw and the service we received. They arranged for us to go to Sanya for fantastic and very reasonable priced foot massages. Well worth it so make sure you go! As seasoned travelers I don't think we have ever had this level of service anywhere in the world.
We ate dinner twice at the Chinese restaurant in the hotel. The first night was excellent - we had the hot pot and our server helped us cook the food and mix the sauce. The 2nd time we ate there it all fell apart a bit. The food was on the cool side. Communication wasn't working very well. I finally gave up and had some fruit sent to the room. They did not charge us for the food. We had room service one night which was very good and large portions.
The hotel guests are almost all Chinese. There were a few Russians and possibly a couple of other western Europeans. Language was not a problem - Levi as well as the other staff really enjoyed a chat in English. If they aren't busy and you have a few minutes take the time to do that!
I wasn't overly impressed with the spa. I took the special offer of a facial and massage. The facial was very good because of the language barrier I was clueless on the products. This would be partly my fault for not asking the front desk where the staff spoke better English. Usually with an aromatic facial there is some choice in what is used. The massage was a bit light handed. The price with the special just under London prices. Definitely go where the locals go.
We used the arcade which was empty when we went bowling. There are lots of organised activities as we had a list of places we wanted to go we didn't partake in any. The beach was great. The guests weren't flocking to the beach and we had some lovely walks on the beach where we felt like we were on a private beach!
We were very pleased with our choice after seeing the hotels in Sanya very busy, commercial and touristy and Yalong Bay which is a slightly nicer beach (as the staff will tell you) but 30 very expensive hotels in a row! The resort is in a very quiet and remote location. Perfect for a beach resort break.

First off, the property of this resort is definitely 5 star or more. It is just lovely and exceptionally clean and well maintained. What impressed me the most is the customer service. Every single staff member has gone above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable.
Everyone from Andy in the Restaurant who knew our names from day one and remembered what we drank, Jeff the Executive Chef, who came to our table every day to make sure our food
was enjoyable, Michael the Food and Beverage Director who every day, made sure we were satisfied with every detail, Jenny the Marriott Rewards Manager who made sure my daughters shoe was found when lost at the pool, and the General Manager Sean who was so personable and friendly and helped me with outside needs as well as making sure every detail of our stay was perfect. We are platinum Elite members and stay at many hotels, but the staff and crew here are by far he most professional and personable that I have ever encountered. This will be our only destination in Sanya

Stunning property, in a quiet location, gorgeous grounds, pools were amazing....... as always, Marriott delivers top notch quality and service. Restaurants inside the resort are quite expensive, but there is nice selection and the breakfast buffet was excellent. GREAT place!!!!!

There is no doubt that this hotel had been designed beautifully from the entrance to the beaches. But hope that they will continue to maintain the place if not, things will start to fall apart. We were upgraded from deluxe to corner sea view since the hotel was not full. Clean and spacious room with good amenities and with wonderful sea view. Nothing much to fault with the staff, there were some hits and misses but there is room for improvement. English is not really a problem here since I had met a no of staff who speaks well. And I can feel that the hotel staff is really trying their best to serve efficiently and making every guest comfortable.

Another reason for choosing this hotel was its own private beach and seclusion. It was not crowded at the beach and the pool, even though there were about 500 guests staying in the hotel. One afternoon about 25 degrees, there was no one in the beach and it gave a sense of tranquillity with the waves smashing at the background with nice sea breeze. It felt so peaceful. Sanya is not really a tourist attraction for foreigners compared to Phuket and Bali. The guests here are mainly Chinese and Russians. It will really take a while or more effort to pull in more international guests who are not residing in China. I don’t think one would consider Sanya if they are not staying in China.

From the airport to the hotel, it takes 35 minutes and 140RMB. It is far from the city centre, with nothing nearby. It is not easy to get a cab to the airport and the concierge has to order one which costs 200RMB. The complimentary shuttle bus actually only runs 3 times a day. We were told that the bus takes almost 2 hours just to reach the airport because of the detour it takes to the shopping mall.

Since we were here only for 3 days 2 nights during the non-peak season, we are able to enjoy the hotel and the service. We had tried almost all the restaurants – Breakfast at Red Star is alright, maybe not the Red Star dinner buffet, the variety is quite limited and the restaurant smells bad, maybe poor ventilation. Star Anise has some nice decent Chinese food though it is not cheap, Star Fish has good service and ok food with nice outdoor table but expensive, Star Fish Bar is a very nice chill out place to have afternoon drinks or snacks and Lobby lounge is good for pre-dinner drinks especially with its 1-1 promotion for martini (recommended). The hotel guests really retire very early, by 9pm the hotel is quiet. They have a number of activities for families and children like the bowling alley, billiard and console games. That is why it is easy to spend time in the hotel without leaving it.

I would have gave 5 stars if not for the location. Renaissance is a great place for short trip especially if you are not planning on leaving the hotel. Else if you want shopping or sightseeing, maybe this place is not the right choice.

We are a family of 3 , stayed in this hotel from 24 to 28 December 2012 .
The hotel is vey nice and new , rooms are spacious and clean , swimmimg pools beautiful and very big , beach fantastic, but......
we will never come back again , at our arrival the receptions were full of guest and only two receptionists , big noise and mess as open market in full opeative hrs......all the bagages were let lying around without any orders and almost no actions from the hotel stuff...
We tried to go to the main restaurant called Red Star for but when we asked if was possible order on the menu instead take buffet , they said no only after several request they say yes but need to wait long time , at that point we checked inside the restaurant and there was an incredible mess , a lot of childrens running and big noise so for that day we gave up and we went to the lounge to take a simple burger ....
the second day we tried the Fish Market restaurant , food was nothing special and super expensive .
The 3rd day we tried again Red Star restaurant as less confusion , we take a buffet which was quite normal food and incuding only soft drink , usually with this price ( more than 330 rmb for person ) in other 5star hotel the beer and some time sparkly wine are included .....
The last day we went again to Red Star and this time we order the menu , 2garlic ,oil and chili pasta and one cesar salad , after 45 minutes and several complains our pasta arrived but was not what we ordered , we got tomato sauce pasta incredibly salty .
So we complain and after another 20 minutes we got our garlic oil and chili pasta .
I was very surprise to receive such treatment in a 5Start hotel like this....
So for this reason and for the confusion , mess , disorder and the noise done by the childrens we decided do not come back in this hotel

My wife and I spent a long weekend at this property and fully agree with many of the earlier, positive comments. Perhaps slightly less than paradise but then I'm not sure you'll ever find that!! Certainly coming from a very cold Beijing it was pretty close. We arranged a limo transfer from the airport which given delays caused by faulty baggage system was worth the extra cost! Despite check-in being pretty busy the staff offered us drinks and a seat while waiting. As it happened the seat wasn't needed as we were promptly attended to. We had booked an ocean view corner studio suite which, although a bit smaller than what I envisaged was well appointed and, for all the time we spent there, pretty good. Our particular room was above the terrace lounge which I imagine could be pretty noisy if your visit happened to coincide with one by a large, conference or similar group but during our stay was no issue. Despite around 850 guests staying at the resort most of the time we felt we had the whole place to ourselves. Only times we really saw a lot of others was at breakfast and dinner. Even at the latter dining in the Star Anise (booking needed) or Star Fish Market was relaxed and quiet. For lunch, or drinks the Star Fish Bar was great. Again we had the place largely to ourselves. Staff throughout were friendly and attentive. Although some weren't 100% fluent in English most tried and we never had a problem being understood. As others have said if you're looking for somewhere with plenty of life and things to do outside of the resort this isn't the place for you. If, like us, you're looking a a place to chill and relax, perhaps escape the winter's cold, you can't go too wrong by trying here. We certainly hope to return again!
