“Peaceful resort, service is a work in progress.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2012

This is a modern peaceful resort, far from the airport, town, and other hotels. Perfect if you want to forgot everything and relax. The rooms were excellent with typically comfy Renaissance beds, baths, and private balcony.
The swimming pools are enormous, and kept the kids busy from dawn 'til dusk. The hotel is on a quiet sandy beach, with plenty of beds and umbrellas and nice views of the sea, coastline and forest. The beach also offers excellent space for walking and jogging for several uninhabited kilometers south of the resort along the sand (where we found a huge dead PIG during a romantic sunset stroll).
The staff were generally very helpful, though they need to keep working on their English. The electric curtains got stuck closed in one room on the first day, it took 4 calls / visits to reception and 24 hours for this to be repaired!
The food was good, a wide selection is available without leaving the resort.

Room Tip: Most rooms face the sea (without sea view), the rooms facing the road / mountain are also quiet sinc...

New modern resort that is impressive by its size, quite far from the airport, around 1h by taxi.
the room was gigantic with a nice South of France feeling. The beach is very big so even though there are many loud chinese/russian groups, you can still find your little place of calm.
We were staying in the day beds next to the sand, and were having lunch there every day, it was really relaxing.

The swimming pool is endless, worth to use it too.
The sea food restaurant was very good, a bit pricey, try to choose an isolated table for more intimacy.
The breakfast buffet is very rich, nice fresh cucumber and orange juices in the morning, asian and western food, basically everything you need.

Overall a good experience, the facilities and the view is very good, it is definitely a 5 star hotel and will stay there again if we go back to Sanya.

I couldn't fault this resort; the service, facilities, staff and the resort itself is amazing. The onsite restaurants are 1st class and the Spa is simply one of the best I have ever been to. Their attention to detail has left nothing to chance. I will defintley visit again next time I am passing through Asia.

Room Tip: Go for a beach view....you won't be dissapointed!!!

This is an excellent resort for a nice family vacation. We stayed here for a week with our 7 year old kid and all of us enjoyed thoroughly. In fact, we ventured out only once for local sightseeing and spent rest of the days in resort itself!

Pros:

Excellent property:
– Resort is new, opened in March 2011. So almost everything is in perfect condition.
– Fabulous rooms, more spacious than other resorts, bathroom is big. Every room has a large balcony (mostly overlooking beach/pool from higher floors and garden from lower floors) with nice seating arrangement.
– Enormous pool (4 large inter-connected pools) with nice pool lighting in the night. Kids pool with slide.
– Nice Spa with good service.
– Beach is virtually private and clean where one can relax with ease (nice family Kabanas at the Beach). Very attentive beach staff and facilities (including kids beach set). Long 3 km beach line where one can take a very quite walk.
– Excellent buffet breakfast (available till 11 pm!) with large Continental and Chinese selection. Three restaurants (continental, chinese, seafood).

Very good for kids:
– This is an amazing resort for kids – we selected it over Sheraton (despite being SPG member) because of its numerous kid’s facilities.
– My son enjoyed a lot at R-Cade (bowling - one kid’s line with side bumps, Xbox, Wii, Kid’s games, TT, Pool etc.), R-Kids (nice kid’s activities throughout the day with some free, toy room, movie room, kid’s food menu, nap room etc.), free movie theater (3 free movies a day including some good kids movies), kids pool with slides, 3 hot water open Jacuzzi, very family looking beach where our son enjoyed a lot!

Amazing service:
– The best part about Renaissance Sanya is its very warm and friendly service. Very nicely managed by Sean (the Resident Manager) – he was wonderful and would have interacted with us atleast 3 times during our stay (very hands-on manager - seemed to be present everywhere in the resort).
– We are vegetarian and Becker (main restaurant manager) and his team (Gloria etc.) took great care of us by preparing custom made vegetarian dishes during lunch / dinner. Even the Chinese Restaurant arranged Vegetarian food for us! (Special thanks to Sudip Menon, sea food restaurant manager, for understanding and conveying our needs to other restaurants).
– Room service is very quick. Staff at the beach is also very friendly and efficient. Staff at R-Cade and R-Kids are excellent.
– I saw a few reactions about poor English skills of the staff – I somewhat disagree with those comments – in my view it is more to do with the difference in their English accent than the English skills.

Cons:

Location: The resort is about 45-60 minutes away from main Sanya city and Airport. There is nothing around the resort. Though resort provides 3x day shuttle bus service to Sanya, you will still feel mentally blocked to venture out. Hence, location may be the foremost consideration while selecting this resort. We purposely wanted a quite secluded location to get away, hence chose Renaissance over others (apart from being a kids friendly resort).

Transportation: The free airport shuttle departs from Airport as per fixed time schedule – we missed it by 15 minutes and the taxi driver outside managed to grab RMB225 from us! On return, we requested the Resort travel desk (they call it Navigator) a day in advance to arrange a private AC car (RMB200 and much better than non-AC old taxis). But at the last moment, the private car driver refused to go to Airport and the Resort travel desk offered us to take a non-AC taxi which just came to drop off some other guests - though the taxi driver turned out to be a nice person but still not a good experience at end of otherwise an excellent trip (I had to unfortunately raise my voice before the travel desk but was helpless as we could have missed our flight).

In all, I would highly recommend Renaissance Sanya for families with small kids and even couples who would just like to get away from the hustle and bustle of a big city life and spend a quality time in a peaceful, nice and caring environment.

Room Tip: Higher floor rooms in C block are quieter, close to restaurants / other facilities with nice beach a...

Crowds: If your plan is to get away from hordes of people and hide away in the resort, this is a nice place in Sanya. It's farther from the airport (50min NE) and not much around, so there are no tour groups like Yalong Bay. On our stay there were convention groups (since the Renaissance boast one of the largest meeting areas) but we really did not see them around other than breakfast to affect our enjoyment. No options around the hotel to walk, sightsee or eat - so consider this before choosing. Surroundings: Sanya doesn't have much beyond the resorts itself (have come multiple times) and the city portion is typical or other cities in China with lots of construction. Shuttle bus operates 3x/day to a mall and airport, but it's 45min to the mall. Taxi is the cheapest transportation to/from the resort (negotiate) and a private car can be arranged even by hotel staff (not the hotel car which is more). Resort opened Mar 2011 so there are still kinks to be worked out - overall the staff tried to be helpful. Grounds: December is a colder month and the swimming pools were cold until noon (outside temp 23C high during trip) although there are 3 hot tubs. Lots of pools around, nice outdoor canopy bed setups to relax, hammocks, sand play area next to the kids pool, 2 small kids slides (shallow) and an ok beach to watch the large waves (it's not a calm place to swim in Dec---yellow/red flags over our 5 days, but free sand toys to borrow for kids). The staff even uses an electric air pump to help inflate our pool toys for free! Kids club/facilities: outstanding, with a large outdoor playscape area attached to the kids club where 4yo and up can play with staff supervision. The 'R cade' is nice with a small theatre that can prebook 3 free movies a day (small English selection but keeps young kids happy) along with pay by the hour bowling/Wii/snooker/pool. Bowling nice as they have the gutter bumpers for kids. Restaurants: smaller selection than other high end Marriotts with prices as expected. The higher end Market fist restaurant had the best food and service and other places were fine (lots of baby chairs). The one area to improve was service in the main restaurant - the seating staff originally told us we could not order a la carte for lunch or dinner (buffet only) even though written resort material stated it was available. This was likely due to the convention and staff worries about serving time. We persisted so ended up getting a la carte and served in a timely manner. Room: roomy and clean. Overall: we enjoyed the facilities, service was good (with opportunity noted above) and would consider staying again during one of the warmer months (i.e. March/April)

Room Tip: Choose one of the wings far from the lobby like "C" or "D" where your room door...

When people said it was far, I didn't realize how far! It is 1hour+ from airport, and 50minutes from high-speed rail (130RMB by taxi meter). 1 hour to main part of town and 30-40minutes to Yalong Bay. There is also NOTHING around the hotel as they are building the area up so you are literally stuck there. The concierge can book you a car, but they start from the more expensive cars. We kept on saying no too expensive, until finally they mentioned the regular car, which is for a full day, 350 RMB around hotel area, or 500 RMB to main part of Sanya/airport. I think it was 300 RMB to do an airport/train drop. Otherwise, the other car is 2000 RMB for the day!!

If you come by high-speed rail, make sure you book a car. We arrived and were shocked to see no official taxi queue. Instead, everyone just tried to flag down taxis that were dropping passengers off.

I thought the service at the hotel was top-notch, although I didn't bother to pre-book a car so didn't have the other reviewer's problem.

check-in: smooth, staff explained facilities, provided map, and made extra effort to put our two rooms close to each other

room: clean, spacious with mini-fridge and good-sized balcony. There's a small couch outside, perfect for lazing about with a book. The only thing is, hotel is build like a U, so only couple of rooms have full frontal sea view. Most "sea view" are only partial side views. Also, you don't want to be too close to the bar side of the lobby. They have live music there sometimes and I could hear the live music all the way in my room 3 floors up.

beach: clean with great cabanas and loungers. Didn't go into the water, too cold, but a bit scary too with signs of sudden drop-off, jelly fish, fast current!

pool: looked like lots of fun too but too cold.

R-cade: lots of games, movies, Wii, bowling, but almost everything had to be paid for hourly :( For those with kids, not sure if you can just buy a day pass?

Gym: No technogym but quite adequate with precor ellipticals and strength training, also free yoga class 3x a week. Jacuzzi & steam room, no sauna. Steam room takes a while so start it up while you go exercise! 2 tennis courts

Food: Buffet breakfast was really nice. Very good selection of juices, cereals, chinese, salad, western. Had dinner at their western seafood restaurant. Our grilled fish and lamb was great, salmon was a bit overcooked but when we mentioned it to the manager, he insisted on comp'ing the salmon and provided a nice fruit plate as well. Very good service.

Overall, great resort but you are kind of stuck there except for the 3x a day shuttle bus to the city. Only 3 restaurants (really), limited room service, so not a lot of food choices either. As for water, they will provide additional bottles for free in the room (call housekeeping) so no need to buy extra unless you insist on your Voss/Evian.

Room Tip: 4 towers, A/B/C/D. A&C are by the lobby, B&D are further away. B&D are near the R-cade...

I have stayed at many hotels and must say this is one of the most well equipped. Everything from the iPhone stereo docks to HD tv in room proves that this is a top notch facility.

The pool is one of the best i have seen, there are at least 4 outdoor jacuzzis and other large pools for both kids and adults.

I recommend having a drink during happy hour at the star fish bar, it is great value for money if you drink house wine or beer.

There are also many other facilities that are worth mentioning the gym, private cinema, bowling alley are all maintained in good condition and the first two are also free of charge.

The drawbacks of the hotel are the distance from the airport (although if you are not planning to leave hotel this is fine) and the lack of restaurant selection (we stayed for five days but had to visit the same restaurants multiple times). It would also be great to heat the outdoor swimming pools during winter months (although this could involve huge electricity bill)

Overall a great experience there is quite a unique experience with the private beach and lack of hotel guests, a must visit for a relaxing stay at Sanya!
