Purportedly 5 star but certain aspects of this new hotel bely that rating.
In general, however: staff, very friendly and helpful though quite a few don't have any English.
The restaurant staff especially friendly and welcoming.
Food: variable. Breakfasts are not so good - they don't seem to be able to cook a fried egg without making it solid! Coffee was cold on the first morning but we soon learned how to check it (there's a candle thingy under the urn) and staff will always help. Juices are not fresh but nasty, cheap chemically liquids. There's plenty of Chinese breakfast food (as you'd expect) and bacon (hard and over cooked), sausages (reasonable) but good bread. All in all, breakfasts score a 4/10
Lunch and Dinner both offer a buffet on the 1st (ground) floor, we didn't go for the buffet as we're not seafood fans but it all looked good. We use the a la carte menu for lunch and dinner and were generally pleased with the food. Some excellent soup (mushroom with black truffle) a good roast pigeon and magnificent fruit platters all at reasonable prices.
There's a Chinese restaurant on the 2nd floor where we managed to eat once - weddings and early closing prevented us from eating there more often but when we did, it was pretty good - beware ordering too much though!
There's an oddly named St Beppe Italian Club on the 17th floor where you can have a drink overlooking the sea and order a pizza. The pizzas are good (I lived in Italy for many years so I'm a pizza snob) and the local beer (Anchor) makes a good accompaniment.
Unfortunately and in common with every hotel I've stayed at in China, people smoke everywhere - in the restaurants (despite friendly no smoking signs), over the buffet food (disgusting) and even in the lifts... I asked for a table with its own no smoking sign but didn't insist. The best way to encourage change is to let these things be known to the staff...
The room we had on the front of the building overlooks the sea (15th floor) with fantastic views right around Sanya Bay. It's quiet with the windows shut, the 2 a/c systems work well and quietly, the balcony is nice to sit and contemplate the world. Room service is good though there seem to be 2 teams, one more meticulous than the other.
The TV has Chinese stations with one English language news station.
There's an open plan bathroom but don't panic if you're on the shy side.. there's a separate w/c - with a door!
The lifts are frustratingly slow so check you've got everything before you leave your room!
A nice touch which I haven't found often elsewhere is that as you take out your room card from the power slot, the lights go off but the plugs stay on so if you need to charge something up while you're out, you can.
All in all, we'd come back to this hotel
