Shangri-La Hotel Haikou
Ranked #3 of 658 Hotels in Haikou
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 6, 2014

My partner and I love Hainan island. This is our third time in Haikou city. Previously, we stayed at the city centre and decided to give this resort hotel a try.
Overall, the service level is not bad, and the facilities are adequate. The staff personnel are young and enthusiastic and although the level of English can be much better, they tried their best to make our stay comfortable. However, as the location is less than ideal with nothing much in the vicinity, we tried communicating to them on how to get to interesting places around the area and mostly got blank stares - quite unusual I would say for a Shangri-La property.
The Chinese food is good and the indoor pool is quite impressive.
For the money we paid, I would say the service and facilities are at best, average. Can be better but overall, it's not a bad stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor to get a better sea view.

We (parents and two children 16 and 11) made a last minute decision to leave Hong Kong over the Chinese New Year holidays for a short break. Hainan Island is only an hour away, so good for a three night (or less) stay. Most of the resorts are in Sanya in the south of the Island, but our late decision meant that we could only get a hotel in the northern city of Haikou. I can't say anything about the location as we just relaxed in the hotel for three days. The hotel is on a beach, but I didn't see anybody using the beach except for short walks. There were no beach facilities or activities. The hotel is new, immaculate, and offers a nice sanctuary for a quiet break. Despite being nearly full for the holidays, the hotel never felt crowded or bustling. We spent time in the indoor pools and outdoor hot tubs, and lounged around in the hammocks, and mostly it seemed as if we had the place to ourselves. The outdoor pool was a bit chilly; no big surprise in February. The staff were uniformly friendly and very willing to help. They sometimes lacked in English skills, and need more experience in true five star hotel standards of service, but we could not have been made to feel more welcome. The food was excellent in each of the three restaurants that we tried, Italian, Chinese and international buffet. After a full dinner the night before, we preferred coffee and a light breakfast on the patio to the buffet breakfast, although it looked good. The rooms were spacious, well appointed and stocked, just as you would expect at a Shangri La hotel. The local golf course is by the Dye Group and is a good round, with plenty to think about on each hole. I guess that the hotel caters almost exclusively to Chinese customers, but we enjoyed it very much for a stress-free, do nothing vacation.

We have loved our stay at the Haikou Shangri-la Hotel, and it will be very difficult to leave this beautiful place. The hotel is new and everything is pristine, from the tasteful décor in the well-appointed rooms to the lush landscaping around the large outdoor pool complex. Everything has been carefully thought through from the desk’s built-in power strip that accommodates every type of electronic device to the recessed lighting in the room’s coffered ceiling. Even more impressive than the elegant rooms was the outstanding service. Many people on the staff speak English, and everyone went out of their way to meet every small request and answer every question. For example, when my husband casually inquired about the best way to slice a star fruit, the floor manager later appeared at our door with a tray bearing three star fruits and a fruit knife to offer a lesson. Manager Sandra and Horizon concierge Natalie were especially gracious. Natalie Wong in fact went out of her way on her day off to obtain for my husband a special gift he wanted to give me, which was not available at the hotel. Finally the food offered at both the breakfast and dinner buffets was delicious and abundant. All in all we could not have selected a better place to spend the week between Christmas and New Years, and look forward to returning when next we are in China.

Room Tip: Access to the Horizon's floor was a lovely addition to our stay.

Really enjoyed staying there! Though far from the main city. Better for people who don't wanna go around. Service was really nice. The breakfast in cafe Kool was the best. The wifi service is really perfect, even outdoor swimming pool has the wifi service.

Room Tip: The Balcony was really superb.

First time to haikou as part of our honeymoon tour around Southern China. I must say the hotel is grand and the lobby is excellent. The rooms can better though and the musky smell can be quite a turn-off. Some suggestions below

Pros
1. Eager and service oriented staff. Perhaps too eager as there were not many guests around.
2. Good selection of food at the buffet
3. New and grand lobby typical of a Shangri-la hotel
4. New and great facilities, pool and gym

Cons
1. Location. Nothing nearby and cabbies demand extra to get us there. A shuttle service would be great?
2. Musky smell in the room and sea view is not that great as promised.
3. Small beach
4. limited English of staff

Dear guest, thank you for your time to share your value experience with us.

Our hotel is located in a new business and tourism focal point in Haikou which is built along the west coast and adjacent the Hainan International Conference and Exposition Center. It takes 20 minutes to get to the city center.

Thank you for your positive comments that can encourage our colleagues to do a good job. We'd like to recommend our Premier Sea View Room for you that is located from 4th to 6th floor with spacious balcony and large floor to ceiling window so that you can enjoy the charming ocean and garden view.

At the same time, we value your suggestions very much that is good for us to improve.

Look forward to welcoming you back and making your next stay more enjoyable and pleasant.

Lastly, we wish you have a wonderful honeymoon!

Was here for two nights and quite impressed overall with their service. Perhaps occupancy was not high but service was very personalized with staff calling me by name, a handwritten note in English re: the weather, noticing what side I like sleeping on etc., a quick in room check in etc. I was in the Middle East for 9-10 days so really missed Asian food & ate as many meals as I could at the summer palace restaurant (where they did at lunch keep delivering dim sum I did not order)
Seaview room was spacious and comfy, free wifi in room and in the Shangri-la car (that was a first for me, wifi in a moving veicle).

The only downside la were:

1) location: Haikou city cab drivers were not happy with remote location, always had to pay extra to hail a cab

2) my room had a heavy moldy smell, especially with the aircon on.

I was here for work (golf event) this is a very nice place /hotel for Haikou. Though I would not come to Haikou myself (on my own dime) for holiday.

No complaints about the level of service in this five star luxury hotel. Only major drawback is the location. Apparently being located in a new area in haikou city, the hotel is supposed to offer a sanctuary from the busy city life. This may be true if not for the surrounding construction which kind of spoil the overall experience of staying in a resort. The nearest shopping or food place is accessible only by taxi and we have experienced cabbies refusing to take us because of the location. A shuttle bus service would be ideal for travellers. Overall not a good experience considering the price that we paid.

Room Tip: high floor please
