“History Forever Lost”

Meixi Memorial Arch
Ranked #17 of 166 things to do in Zhuhai
Attraction details
Reviewed September 1, 2016

For some people, the 30-40 minute taxi ride from the coast to the Meixi Stone Archways, together with the 65 Yuan entrance fee to see some memorial relics and a few Qing dynasty houses, may seem like a lot of money and effort to get there. However, there is a strong sense of the old world lost here and it is the only place in China that I didn't encounter other tourists. To the left of the archways are Chen Fang's former residences, including a small opera stage. These houses contain some historical items and photos from the era. Some interesting information concerning famous historical characters born in Meixi can also be found in the last building. Note that leaving the museum, you may have trouble getting a bus or taxi back, as it is far out of town.

We spent an interesting few hours here on a warm day. Site is interesting with pleasant gardens and local history. The damage to the site by the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution brought some recent history into perspective.

This place is nice, a bit removed from the city center, but worth the visit. It is very peaceful and is a nice bit of history. The grounds are fairly large and well kept.

The site a long way from the modern centre but given zhuhai is quite a green garden city the taxi rid was a pleasant experience. The site has the 2 remaining memorial arches as well as several old house belonging to Chen fang who made a fortune in Hawaii and married a Hawaiian princess.
He sent money back to his community and his Chinese wife hence the arches built in his honour
There is also a wax work display of leading zhuhai historical heroes.

This is arguably one of the best attractions in the entire Guangdong province. The place is beautiful and peaceful and there's lots of history in the buildings. There's also an interesting museum explaining about Chinese door signs and archways.
Highly recommended.
