Seeing all of the painters was absolutely fascinating! Go down the alleyways, rather than staying on the main roads.

I learn painting in my spare time. This interesting place is our paradise to buy painting materials. It definitely cheaper than in Hong Kong. However, Dafen is actually famous for its mass production of imitations of famous painting. You can see the art workers doing their copying job just outside or inside lots of small shop. Every worker is so busy! Just go ahead to bargain a good price if you want to buy these imitated paintings as a gift to your friend or as decoration at your home. Enjoy the feel of painting factory!

I go here every 6 months and i am never bored by the ever changing variety of art work available. If you are looking to sample the arts of china this is an easy place to start- be prepared to bargin.

Initially cynical about the masses of imitations of well-known paintings, I was soon wowed by the sheer energy and exuberance of this little suburb (not really a village). We had a great time walking around, taking photographs, "discovering" artists and eventually buying some stuff for our walls. There are some food options (dumplings!) as well as a crammed little bookshop with some great finds - John Updike essays on art; David Hockney and Francis Bacon exhibition catalogues; and my favourite: a French collector's book on Chinese erotic art. We also found a rustic-industrial hipster coffee shop to end the trip. The artists and dealers are all very friendly and accommodating. Three hours well-spent.

Absolutely intriguing. Here is where you can see Chinese “artists" hard at work copying anything they can get their hands on, including your favorite photographs (portraits, pets, landscapes, you name it). There are copies of the Mona Lisa all over the place, brush-stroke perfect, as well as all kinds of European masters. Bring home an original Rembrandt or a Monet for hundreds of renminbi. I saw one guy with a dozen or more canvases spread out on the walkway, painting them all at once, one brush stroke at a time. In fairness, there is also a load of original Chinese art on display here. Or is it original? How many copies of that painting you are buying really exist? No one knows…
