“Among the best of a bad lot”
Reviewed January 5, 2011

The area where Shenzhen meets Hong Kong most probably will never be known as a culinary heaven. Far from it, most restaurants in the border zone are average at best. Some look outright dreary. Yamagoya, a franchise restaurant, stands among the most passable of food establishments in this area. Located above the railway station in the second floor of the border complex, Yamagoya offers simple japanese/korean fare for those in a hurry and not willing to ask too much. I sampled their kimchi fried rice and it turned out to be quite tasty. Other familiar hot pot dishes and fried rices complement the menu. As most restaurants in the area, there is no heating. Thus if you go in winter, their hot pot/fried dishes are a must as others will be quite cold by the time they get to your table. Not a competition to Ajisen Ramen, its closer competitor, but among the few palatable choices in this area.
