Owner description: Hiking Wutong Mountain is one of Shenzhen citizens’ most popular activities (and offers trails for all experience levels). It’s a great way to get exercise and breathtaking vistas. On a clear day you can see Hong Kong.

Take the hiking trail, not the road. Follow signs for the Teishen Gully trail from Wutong Village entrance. This trail pass near water falls to reach the Wutong and the shadows of trees is good on hot summer days. See the guide on every trail for "Wutong Mountain from Wutong Village" and take the "route 1" described.

You have two options for this hike. One is to take the road, but you miss all the cool stuff except for the view at the top (non-existent if cloudy) - we took the road hiking down today and it was extremely boring. It's also exposed and hot during these sunny summer days.

The second option is to actually hike the hiking path - this is a fairly challenging and strenuous stairs kind of hike, but you follow a gully, cross brooks and streams by bridge and by boulders, and pass many cool waterfalls. It's extremely picturesque, and although exhausting, going up this path was the best part of the hike. It's some of the most stairs I've gone up in China after visiting various scenic spots that require hiking over my 2 years here. Seriously, this is a day trip - if you're doing the actual path hike (not road hike), give yourself a good 3-4 hours to get up to the top if you go at a fairly quick pace.

Our legs were killing us when we got to the top, so we took the road down. BTW, there's no longer any shuttle service as is mentioned in comments below - you'll use your legs to haul yourself up there and haul yourself back down. Another option is to rent bikes and bike up the road/coast down it, but that's nowhere near as cool as the gully/waterfalls hiking path/stairs.

Bring some snacks! You'll be starving when you get to the top! Go in the morning, because the early afternoon sun can be a killer near the top where things are exposed more. The misty clouds and light rain was very refreshing this morning, but it clears out as the sun gets more intense by the afternoon. Bringing an umbrella is also a wise idea.

Wutong Mountain is the highest mountain in Shenzhen. It's on the eastern side of this large city. It can be reached by subway/bus combination, or by taxi. At about 3000 feet, it's not particularly high, but it affords a nice view of the city on a relatively clear day. It's about a 3-4 hour hike up and 2-3 hours down. If you have time, be sure to visit Hong Fa Temple, a newish Buddhist temple on the side of the mountain, at Fairy Lake. Wutong Mountain is the greatest natural beauty in Shenzhen and worth the time. If hiking is not your thing, go to the base of the mountain and take the bus up to Hong Fa Temple. You can visit the botanical gardens in that area as well. Well worth the trip.

This thing was a witch to climb- think I read a review on here that the last 25% is the most difficult and it's true. We got caught in a downpour about 200 m from the top and I thought I was gonna die. Seriously, I would write your will first.

Tired of the hustle and bustle of Shenzhen and the Guandong area? Tired of the factories, the people, the pollution? Need some excercise? This just what you need. I took a taxi from Futian in Shenzhen to Wutong Mountain - ~80 RMB. The driver didn't know where to go but asked a few people in the area and finally arrived at the trailhead (a big decorative gate over the road up the mountain). Yes there's a road, a paved road, so it's not exactly Yosemite, and it's full of young Chinese kids with jeans, high heels (!) and even a guy with leather pants (!!), many carrying mobile phones with a Chinese pop music soundtrack for your ascent, but even with all that, it's awesome. The road/trail is tremendously well-done. There are facilities to the very top, tea houses, concession stands, trash cans, etc... You can go 75% of the way with very little effort, simply walking up the road with a slow incline, about 4 km. The rest of the way is literally a stairway through the forest. Beautifully well-maintained stone stairs. That last 25% will get your heart pumping, finishing the hike off at 4.5km and 950m elevation gain. If you're a strong hiker and you run down, allow 3 hours. If you're in for a leisurely stroll, take lots of rests and want a meal on the mountain, budget 6 hours. Follow the signs for Da Wutong to go to the big peak.
