“Beautiful Hotel”
Reviewed March 18, 2012

Spent 3 nights in Dongguan on business, but found all aspects of the hotel great. Beds are a bit hard? WiFi free but not reliable in rooms.

The Royal Lagoon is a great place to stay when in the Dongguan district. It is a great spot to get away from the hustle and bustle of China. From the moment you walk into the lobby, a feeling of relaxation and comfort comes over you. The rooms are well appointed and the views from your balcony are simply gorgeous. The food is excellent, I enjoy the buffet breakfasts and the Brazillian BBQ restaurant is a refreshing treat while in China.

We stayed at the hotel twice, on July 2010 and then again on April 2011.
While the first visit was very good, the second one was absolutely disastrous.
The hotel is located far from the center of town and has a resort feel to it.
The lobby is beautiful with numerous sitting places.
Check in was rather slow, mainly due to limited English skills of the staff.
We were upgraded to a luxury room facing the pool. Make sure you only stay in rooms facing the pool, as other rooms face the gardens (with horribly loud frogs at night!) and other rooms face the inner courtyard (which is loud and ugly - basically a parking lot).
Our room was very nice with stunning views of the pool and the lagoon.
The hotel has 2 pools - an outdoor one (which is awesome) and an inner pool, where a lot of locals come to swim, thus making it crowded, VERY loud and not too clean (the showers and toilets are awful).
There's a water park near the hotel. mind you, some brochures make you feel it belongs to the hotel - but it is not in any way. It is a private water park (cannot recall the price), but please - do NOT waste your time nor money on it, since it is totally (and I mean TOTALLY) worthless.
Breakfast was very good (and also included in our low price). There was a lot to choose from, but the place felt like an airport, with dozens of people constantly on the move - and again - LOUD people.
We had a buffet dinner at the same place we had breakfast - "Royal Cafe", as it was the only restaurant at the hotel which offered a 50% discount for AdvantagePlus card holders. Dinner was excellent, and well worth the 30US$ it cost us (after discount).
The hotel offers no Club lounge, and evening activities are limited to a very Chinese-themed karaoke club or a bar with a local band (which is ok, after a couple of drinks...).
So - what went wrong from the first ime to the second time we stayed there? Well, most of the staff changed, and the new staff could not care less for Western guests, and only took care of local tourism (which is the hotel's main theme, btw).
Bottom line - despite the good first visit, there will not be a third stay at this hotel.

I've stayed here 3 times now and I always look forward to it. It is a massive hotel with great facilities. The pools ( outdoor and indoor ) are huge. The gyms are ok. The restaurants are variable ( avoid the Brazilian BBQ like the plague ).
The strangest thing about the hotel is that, no matter how full, you rarely see another person.
The surroundings are stunning. There is a massive lake out front and a woodland walk through manicured gardens up to a pagoda surrounded by statues. Out the back of the hotel there is a forest and some ponds which are inhabited by large frogs which make the most bizarre noise.
The worst thing by far about the hotel is reception, and this has got progressively worse. They speak patchy English and everything takes ages. This really needs sharpening up as every request turns into a protracted discussion among the staff and endless questions.
they always get it right in the end though!

This place was my home for several months as I worked in the Dongguan area.

The rooms were great and so was service.

The food was no so good, but most food in China was not that great. It was very had to find a place that had really good food.

When I traveled to other area's of China I quickly learned to say "I can't wait to get home to the Sofitel."

Since I didn't have to pay for anything I didn't care what the prices were, but they were very expensive.

If you go to Dongguan this is the place you will want to stay. Don't bother staying anyplace else they will just not compare.
