“Staff are very helpful, lack of EN channel”
Reviewed May 27, 2014

Staff tried everything they could to remedy the problems related to our stay. Dinner buffet was excellent and is highly recommended. Friendliness of staff at check-in by offering breakfast free of charge. Waiters were polite and breakfast buffet was excellent The property was brand new The room is nice, with interesting bathroom/shower/tub layout, which I think works, but might not be to everyone's liking, since tub and shower are in same enclosure; also mostly glass-enclosed so that this reduces privacy. The fluffy white robes and towels. Video on demand was nice. To compensate for the difficult challenges we had with the room, the WIFI, etc, the manager offered us a driver to take us back to our place in Xiamen. That was nice. Overall impression: the hotel is still in opening phase and needs to address some serious challenges. I have stayed in the Langham in London which is much nicer.
Lack of English television channels except for CCTV Chinese news station. This seems very limited for a 5-star hotel and is the exception to all other 5 star hotels I have tried in Xiamen and China

Room Tip: do not chose the end room

I stayed in the Langham Place Xiamen 4 consecutive days April 2014 during the Easter holiday. The hotel is newly decorated. However, the service is not up to standard in many areas, such as the swimming pool, restaurant and lobby. The staffs are not helpful. In a particular case, we went to the star hall floor (L26) and were scolded by someone who claimed to be the senior management from the owner side (not the operator), with a very bad attitude (around 2pm of 21/4/2014).

In summary, the hotel is supposed to be international 5 star but the service is local style. Expensive, and do not know how to treat customers. Very disappointed and I cannot imagine I will stay there again.

Room Tip: Try to avoid the rooms at the very end.

Stayed @ Langham for 5 nights during Xiamen stone fair.
Hotel location is very good ,close enough to Exhibition center and away from down traffic
which is terrible because of the ongoing excavations for Metro all over Xiamen.
I will not be hard with my comments as the hotel is still under completion and "tuning up",
however i don't feel a hard commitment on having enough staff speaking English.
With expected many mistakes or inconveniences one faces in soft opening ,i ended up
explaining the problems to 3 persons sometimes without having any of them realize the
problem.Shouldn't having Mr Eric or Miss Enias i might have checked out the 2nd night.
Upon checking in my room it was really hot (29 C),i thought the A/C was off,i set it myself to
20 C and went out,as i returned a couple of hours later nothing changed,so i called the housekeeper who called the technician who advised me to switch the Thermostat off and
It was night and my wife and myself were just arriving from a very long trip (22 hrs travel )
and decided to sleep the night and solve the problem next morning. At midnight i followed the technician advise OPENED THE WINDOW despite the chillers noise outside-couldn't sleep either. In the morning " i tried " to explain the problem to the reception and told them if they can't fix the room temperature to move me to another room, and left to the fair which was the aim of my trip.Returned @ night -same problem-Here i couldn't take it any longer and asked the reception that i need to talk to someone who can really understand English,we finally
met Miss Enias and later Mr Eric who really made our stay becoming very good, and were moved to a different room.
We faced other problems in the restaurant the 1st night when we had the dinner buffet,
again the gentleman who introduced us to the buffet doesn't know well the ingredients i.e if hasn't a clue that the springrolls or the shrimps dim sum contain pork , like most of the buffet food selection(surprisingly even these two contained pork meet).Breakfast buffet was excellent.
However again with the help of Mr Eric everything turned positive from my 3rd day till
checkout. To be fair all the staff are very polite and trying hard to satisfy the clients,
rooms and all hotel premisses are very clean.
Rooms and bathrooms are large and well appointed.,The main problem is the language
Maybe this hotel is targeting the Chinese clients ,however if they target overseas clients they have lot of work to do,and for a large hotel they need more than 1 ERIC and 1 ENIAS.

Room Tip: If assigned to room 705 make sure the A/C and electric windows problems are fixed.

This hotel is not 'fully' open yet, still working on some floors, and the amenities, such as the pool and some of the suites. We were tempted to try their lunch buffet, just now on special offer. Despite that fact that it closes at 2 pm (so early to close for a buffet lunch!) we enjoyed a good variety of continental food, that actually did not all take like Chinese versions of continental food. We had some Indian curry (very nice) loads of salads (what a nice change for China to have decent salad with romaine lettuce and good choice of salad dressings); great choice of sushi and sashimi cut to order (we had loads). also enjoyed fresh grilled cuts of beef, pork and chicken with side sauces to order. And with still some room for dessert, really enjoyed the made to order ice-cream mixed sundaes. Get them to mash the ice-cream (about 6 different flavours on offer) with the mixed nuts or other goodies on offer.
A bit disappointed that the well-priced bottle of house wine (about 210 RMB per bottle) ran out after just one bottle; they provided an alternative at same price that was also nice, but I wonder why this always happens at Chinese restaurants - order one bottle and that is all they have in stock! Weird.
Loved the décor, and how the restaurant was set up - large with loads of private parts, corners, and areas. Good cutlery, glasses and cloth napkins. We will go back and maybe plan to arrive early. The Chinese like to eat early and finish early, which kind of spoils a long lazy lunch.

We were invited to see one of the small suites but were disappointed when they said that not all the suites were completed; the pool was not yet open; the spa was not yet open and out the windows you could see construction all around. Also, the taxi could not find the place. Best to get a taxi to Wanda Plaza ( a really nice shopping centre with IMAX just nearby) and to walk over. My friends' taxi driver could not find it either, and walking around you really could not tell where the main entrance was. So.. still a work in progress. The Portuguese waiter and hotel staff were the most helpful; many of the Chinese servers struggled with English. I was surprised since I expected more from Langham; I know the Langham in London.

BUT... we will be back for lunch and maybe even dinner. we might also try out the rooms in a month or so. Worth the effort to find the place.

Room Tip: If you go for lunch go early! it closes at 2 pm. If you want to take advantage of their 'early...
