“Very pleasant B&B”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 16, 2012

We have just stayed here for two nights. The hotel is located in a quiet part of the island but well situated for most of the sights. It has a very friendly family feel. Remy provides a lovely personal touch. He was slightly short-staffed while we were there so he did most things himself. He cooked us a very tasty meal one evening and did the breakfasts. He was also very helpful in ensuring our stay on the island was a successful one. I do not know about other options on the island but would recommend this one.

Room Tip: We stayed on the top floor. We took both of the rooms on the floor, the floor below has more rooms...

I don't know where the previous reviewer stayed but it doesn't sound as though it was Remy's and there would be little value in refuting every point that the reviewer made. Best to ignore it.

We were met off the ferry and led to Remy's and shown to our rooms. As we were a group of grandparents, parents and children, six in all, we had the third floor to ourselves. The accomodation in this small family run hotel is simple, quiet, clean and comfortable. Remy was tremendously helpful in directing us to the sights and places to eat. Remy cooked for us one evening, a delicious soup, salad, main course (beef, ratatouille & fried potatoes) and fruit salad washed down with a good value vin de table. Breakfast was more than adequate with good coffee.

The weather was pretty dreadful on our visit and although we couldn't make use of the small garden or roof terrace there was always a warm welcome back at Remy's. Wi-fi was quite good enough but more importantly was free. I have no hesitation in recommending Remy's small hotel as a base for your stay on Gulangyu.

Room Tip: Third floor was good

We stayed at Remy's Garden Hotel after reading positive reviews on tripadvisor.com.
This hotel is nothing like the reviews and does not deliver what it promises.

- Low quality room and furniture (and holes in sheets);
- Not clean (large amounts of dust under bed, on cupboards);
- Dirty bathroom (think moldy walls);
- Trash permanently stored in the "Garden" and on the shared balcony (think old doors and pieces of rusty metal);
- Rather low quality food (very minimal breakfast, shared jars, no plates, dirty toaster);
- No sign of Remy or his wife, or their "personal, mom-and-pop atmosphere";
- No staff after breakfast.

The satellite decoder was stuck to the TV with tape.
We found a previous guest's dirty sock under the bed.
And a previous guest's used soap bar in the shower.
I put that soap in the trash, but the staff just placed it back on the sink.

And yet, the hotel was fully booked, mostly non-Chinese guests.

All of this might not even have bothered us.
I might have written it off as culture differences.
But we discovered that there are quite a few seriously gorgeous hotels on Gulangyu-island, which deliver three or four star quality and impeccable service, in the same price range.

Apparently, those hotels are Chinese owned, don't get many non-Chinese guests yet.
So they don't get reviews on tripadvisor.com, but on their Chinese counterpart daodao.com.

I'm sure Remy is fully aware of this, and counts on uninformed Western guests for his business.
After all, once you've booked and payed ahead, it's a real bother to switch to another hotel.
In other words, the language barrier allows Remy to be rather lazy.

Don't stay at Remy’s Garden Hotel (瑞米花园旅馆).
Instead, check out places like the “Yangtao Hotel” (杨桃院子) or the “Gulangyu Lee Inn Leisure Coffee Hostels” (鼓浪屿李家荘休闲咖啡馆).

This review has really shocked us.
We even challenged our organization and we verified point by point the accuracy of the remarks of this article. After study I can guarantee that everything is false:
First of all, the difference between us and other institutions is that I live in this house with my wife and our baby, so we welcome our customers in our home and not in a building sterile and neutral. With my staff we are eight persons to support the service for eight hotel rooms:
• A Night watchman, present from 7: 00 PM to 7: 00 AM
• Two young ladies speaking Chinese, English and German, for the reception and room service, they are present in shifted, from 7: 00 AM to 7: 00 PM
• A receptionist speaking Chinese and English, also providing service to the Bar, present from 10: 00 AM to 7: 00 PM
• Two Ladies for the household, they are present from 8: 00 AM to 4: 00 PM
With such an effective, here on Gulangyu Island we are establishing the highest ratio between staff and customers. If necessary, we help our clients for the documentation of the VISA abstention. We also help to organize regional trips : we offer a private driver for those who want to visit the Hakka houses (Tulou) of Yongding, or the Puppets Museum of Quangzhou, but also the historic city of stonemasons on Granite : Chongwu. We are not tourism agency, this service is for free and also includes the proposal of Hotels partners.
There is only one hotel on Gulangyu with an official star rating, the Marine Garden Hotel, with it we are the only ones to offer the Room Service 12 hours per day and also the only one to offer a real continental breakfast : In this doubtful review is written that our Breakfast is lean and that even had to share cups and plates ... that is completely ridiculous. Our continental breakfast is to choose on a daily menu card, with a large choice of hot and cold drinks, pastries and breads, homemade fruit salads and hot meals such as omelets and soups. All these products are to choose freely in quantity, so someone who writes that he has not eaten his fill, is that he did not choose our Continental breakfast, I would even say that this person never came to my hotel ! By the way, I inform that the name written as signature of this doubtful review is not on our reservation or billing lists. This review is an alignment of lies and the publisher even allows himself to insult me by calling me "lazy" also he declares that he don’t know me. I suspect that this person has been paid by the institutions he advises, because the two hotels have the same owner. Opened very recently they have not enough customers : In this message everyone can feel how much this person regrets that his friends hotels do not have foreign customers, personal interest is omnipresent.
The only true information I could find, is that a part of our garden was closed for public, this winter, because we are building a new kitchen : up on the month of May with an additional cook, we can propose more European and Chinese Menus.
Reading once again this review, I also noted a contradiction of the retail ranking, in compare with a title and the final ranking, completely exaggerated and defamatory, this review lacks objectivity and I invite all readers to come and to check by their own means.

Gulangyu was an amazing island. We loved exploring its meandering lanes and unique architecture. The fact that it was mostly free from motorized vehicles added to its charm. Remy's Garden Hotel was in a street that had locals living around it and it was lovely to be able to watch the kids walking to school in the mornings from our window. It was away from the tourist crowds but not deserted, and as female travelers we felt safe walking back to the hotel at night. Our ancestors were from Xiamen although we have no idea where our China-based relatives might be now. The hospitality of many of the people in Gulangyu made our visit a warm and memorable experience. The guy who managed the reception at Remy's was helpful and friendly and helped us figure out how to get around Xiamen. The room was clean, comfortable and very reasonably priced. With free wifi and a pleasant oasis of a garden, it was value for money and I would definitely recommend Remy's Garden Hotel to anyone.

Our family had a lovely 4-day stay with Remy and his wife here. He speaks English, French and German, and she is Chinese, so they were able to provide an excellent western hotel experience (complete with wine, a home-cooked dinner and conversation) and the local input that a Chinese speaker can give regarding addresses and restaurant names. Though there may be places on Gulangyu with slightly smarter-looking rooms, the family approach that Remy brings to this small and perfectly-located hotel is unique. I have lived in China for 5 years with my family, and traveled here since the early 80s. Gulangyu is one of the loveliest destinations in the country, with old buildings in a riot of architectural styles around every corner, and more old trees in a few square kilometers than most entire Chinese cities. As with a number of Asia's greatest destinations (Laos, for example), Gulangyu isn't about any particular destination or site, but rather just getting lost and enjoying the feel of the island. The key to enjoying the experience here is getting away from the main tourist zone by the Lun Du ferry, and Remy's hotel is perfectly-located for this. Try to get here away from major holidays and weekends, and enjoy Gulangyu at its quiet best. You couldn't ask for a more charming host than Remy and his family!

Comfortable, clean room. Warm shower. Electric blanket on the bed -- so warm, comfortable and cozy in January! Wireless internet -- fast enough, completely reliable and included in the price of the room. Remy speaks good English, French and German and enthusiastically provides information and guidance for enjoying the wonderful island. There are two young interns on the staff who speak adequate English, German and, of course, perfect Chinese. They are delightful, friendly young people who really add to the fun, not to mention their ability to translate. We stayed 7 nights, were entirely comfortable and we completely enjoyed ourselves. There is a nice, quiet dining room and Remy is a great cook. He cooked us breakfast each day including European-style ham & tomato salads, fruit salads, fresh fruit juices and wonderful vegetable omelets. Also does a great dinner. Prices were all very reasonable. Whenever we needed something (like a transformer we forgot), it was quickly provided. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: All rooms have their own bathroom, but for some rooms the bathroom (actually a very nice bathroom) i...

Had a great stay at Remy's Garden over a week ago. Its has a real mom & pop shop kind of feel to it, so you won't be disappointed with the service. Those of you who have traveled or lived in China know that the service can be on the mediocre side most of the time. Not here. Remy's a friendly host with some good stories if you get a chance to chat with him for a bit. He gave us a bunch of tips on where to go and how to get across from Xiamen after the last ferry.

Also, if you get tired of Chinese cuisine, he can whip up a good western style breakfast.

Besides all that, the rooms were clean and comfortable.

Gulangyu has a lot of character with its old colonial villas, winding paths, and local cuisine. I can't speak for the other hotels/hostels on the island in regards to their rooms, but we did have a couple of bad dining experiences at the other hotels that offer dishes. One place we went to gave us a salad with frozen tuna. We asked for it to be remade, but were told that nobody else complained about it and that that was the local way of making the dish. Well, not sure how long the natives of the island have been freezing fish for use in their dishes. Needless to say, we won't go back there. That's the point. At Remy's you don't get that "We don't care about how we serve you because you will probably never come back here again" type of service.
