“More 3 stars than a 5 stars hotel”
Reviewed December 9, 2008

Well, I usually book an hotel, twice a week in 2 different cities of China because of business and I can tell you: Ramada Plaza is a chinese "western" hotel which advertise the fact that they are a 5 stars plaza (I'm wondering how) but definitely no more than 3 stars regarding the western standard: old fashioned, bathroom of the 80s, school nearby + bad windows = wake up early in the morning. Staff was pleasant though. Make your choice!

I stayed 2 nights at this hotel on a brief stopover at Fuzhou. It was one of the few quality chains in the city. The hotel was on the North ring road some distance from downtown and it was frequented mainly by the business crowd. While it was supposed to be a modern hotel, the hotel had a little tired and dated look inside, from the outside it was an impressive high rise, like one of the hundred impressive high rises in the city. It turned out that it was the first joint venture internatinal hotel in the city so could do with some refurbishing. Nevertheless, the rooms were large and comfortable. The breakfast buffet was a mixture of oriental and occidental fare. I must say that I was very thankful to the hotel check-in staff. I arrived at 9am and was promptly given an available room on exec floor because none of deluxe rooms were available. None of "our check-in time is 3pm" attitute that sometimes I encountered elsewhere. Full marks !

I mentioned that the hotel in on the North part of the city. Be aware that Fuzhou airport is one of those airports in China that is very far away from downtown. Most info sites say the airport is some 40km Southeast from the city, probably meanining from the edge of the city ! It is actually some 50-55km to the city centre and some 55-60km to the hotel. It will take at least 1 hr by taxi off peak ! So if time is precious to you, look for a downtown hotel or a hotel in the Southeast zone of the city.

  • Liked — Excellent staff attitude at check-in for early arrival (9am)
  • Disliked — Slightly dated outlook, could do with some refurbishing

When this hotel opened a few years ago it was wonderful - a large number of westerners on staff to launch the property made it a great bargain in every respect - service, food etc.

I am afraid that now it has turned into another Chinese operated hotel. All the westerners are gone and any "feel" of western service has left with them. Room service is spotty as the staff speaks poor english and all the restaurant food has taken on that vaguely fish-like taste found in so many Chinese restaurants trying to do western food.

In my opinion the only place to stay in Fuzhou these days is the Shangri-La. Don't be fooled by the Lakeside Inn's 5-star designation - that was long, long ago in the late 1980's when I first traveled to Fuzhou

Ramada Plaza Hotel (no relationship to the old US Ramada Inns) is a 4+ star hotel. I have staid there on several occasions, for a total of about 30 nights. I paid $58. USD per night including goumet breakfast of Japanese, Chinese and American food!
Tips ARE NOT accepted!

Location is great. The service and friendliness of the staff is outstanding. Most of the desk staff speak English. They have there own car service at very reasonable rates or you can just raise your hand outside the hotel for a taxi.

ANY assistance you need - the staff will provide ... translation help, bi-ligual guides, inside tips about Fujian, help with reservations, etc.

I would be glad to help anyone traveling to Fuzhou, Fujian Provence.
