We flew into Punta Arenas and were met at the airport by Mauricio. We had neglected to specify that we would like dinner but Pamela and husband/chef Luis asked if we would mind sharing a dinner. We said sure and the one dinner was plenty for both of us. The centre-piece was the sea bass entree, which was as good as it gets. It was so good I don't remember what else we ate but we were delighted and sated. Breakfast the next morning was delicious and filling.

Because we are both tall I had requested a room with a queen- or king-size bed and were not disappointed. La Casa Escondida is located about 15 minutes north of Punta Arenas, down a side road and up a winding path. Surrounded by trees and flowers, it makes one feel that one is in the middle of a forest--even though a large military base is located across the road. Luis designed and built the main house, which has 5 rooms, each with en suite. There is a comfortable sitting area in front of a wood-burning stove, and hand-crafted (also by Luis) wood tables and dining chairs. This is a family operation: Mauricio is Pamela's brother and their mother Edita, a retired teacher is also around to help out.

La Casa Escondida (The Hidden House) also has 2 cabins. One has 2 rooms with private bath; the other has 5 beds with one bath.

The next morning we waited for our rented truck to be delivered so we could head to Torres del Paine National Park for 3 days. The Internet connection was excellent so we checked e-mail--a good thing as e-mail service in the park is problematic, at best.

La Casa Escondida is a wonderful find and we would return there in a heartbeat. One more note: there was no additional charge to meet us at the airport and bring us to the inn. Breakfast is included in the price; dinner is extra.

Room Tip: Reserve early and be clear about preferred bed(s)

The (self-made !) little cabins and the main house with rooms as well as the whole spacious terrain are beautiful and extraordinary, not only for Chile. We loved the smell of the many wood stoves, that made the rooms warm and comfy after a long day out in windy Patagonia. We enjoyed talking to Luis and his wife, who will help you with everything. When we had a problem with the bank they even talked to the only spanish speaking staff for us. You have internet access, even can use the computer in the main room and get fresh cutted fruits (besides the usual toast, cheese, jam, eggs etc) for breakfast. One night we had BBQ that Luis prepared on a special BBQ located in one of the cabins - it was delicious and worth every pesos / dollar. We truly loved our stay at La Casa Escondida, if we ever get back to that area we will certainly stay here again.

My husband, our 3 year old daugther and I stayed 4 nights at La Casa Escondida. Mauricio, Editha, Pamela and Luis were great hosts, and did whatever they could to make us feel comfortable and happy. And we did!! La casa escondida and their hosts offered an exceptionally charming atmosphere of all kinds. We enjoyed beeing with the hosts, playing with their dog Michelle, walking around in the garden woods, eating good home-made food and relaxing in front of the open fire. We also got to try the lovely mini SPA; a cozy sauna equipped with eucalyptus water for hightening the temperature, and the possibility to enjoy a bottle of red wine! We highly recommend this place! PS: bring waterbottle for use in bed at night, cause the temperatures get low in Patagonia!

The hosts and guests at this bed and breakfast were absolutely fabulous, plus Luis cooks up some of the best BBQ in all of Chile. Why stay in Punta Arenas when you could be here in peace and quiet in a beautiful hand-built lodge? I slept so well in the comfortable bed, the breakfasts are fantastic with REAL coffee and not the Nescafe served everywhere else. If you don't have a car, you can get picked up and taken to the airport or the bus to Torres del Paine, or a rental car probably much cheaper than what you could find on the internet can be arranged for you as well. There's really no other choice of a place to stay, I wouldn't consider any other place.
