This statue is in the main town square in Punta Arenas which is surrounded by lovely mansions. If you are in the city, you should see the square.

The legend is that if you kiss the toe of the Indian on the statue, you will be successful in business and as a result will be able to return to Patagonia. I kiss the statue just in case, since both outcomes would be nice.

The memorial is surrounded by a lovely park which acts like the town square. The square is surrounded by 19th century mansions, restaurants and upscale hotels. Vendors sell local wares from kiosks and friendly comminuty dogs follow you about. Legend has it that you must kiss the foot of the Tehuelche Indian who sits at the feet of Magellean to make sure you come this way again!

Something to see if you are passing through the piazza but not particularly worth the effort other than a photo opportunity. That said, there are many stalls in the square selling all sorts of local artisan gifts and it is the centre of town so you get to see many locals pass by.

In the center of the flat part of Punta Arenas Patagonia/Chile, is Plaza del Arma. It's loaded with interesting wagons selling all sorts of inexpensive souvenirs. I bought the cutest little penguin keychains and some scarves and hats. After all, it's pretty far south of the equator! The sweaters (most with llama designs) were tempting and I kind of wish I brought one home. If you like lapis lazula blue stones, this is a good place to find some inexpensive jewelry, but most of all you just like to wander around under the gaze of the Magellan statue and drink it in.

But the plaza's most conspicuous feature is not Ferdinand...it's all the Fidos lounging around the square. They don't belong to anyone, they copulate at the drop of a hat, and they just don't give a darn that you might want to sit on the bench they're warming. I understand from the locals that nobody likes the dogs but there they are, anyway.

Back to the statue: it's very nice and the base is surrounded by Patagonia natives. There's one that offers his foot to be rubbed. If you do, legend has it you'll come back to Punta Arenas. Maybe if there were more Penguins out at the Penguin viewing beach. But that's another story.

It is in the middle of the little principal square of the city. If you pass for it, have a look, but no need to go there just to see it as there isn t anything special in it.
