“nice views, good breakfast, clean room”
Reviewed February 24, 2012

i was stuck in punta arenas for 4 days and chose this hotel because of the US affiliation, and i did not have time to explore other hotels, i had to book in a hurry while stuck in sao paulo brazil, and booked in 20 minutes,
was going to unknown territory and wanted to be safe
and the hotel was good and safe, only 15 minutes per internet use, then u had to pay, good breakfast, nice bread and a sweet spread. walking distance from the cruise port, reason why i chose it too.
the salad was disappointing, but it is very cold and hard to get fresh vegetables near antartica.
front desk spoke english.

Room Tip: i booked last minute and everything was fine,

We stayed in the past 3 years ago and we chose it again as a central warm and friendly hotel . The porter took the luggages before ask and even before be near to the hotel gate.He came to our car while we were unloding the car. The lady receptionist was quick, eficient, polite and helpful.
I knew the rooms were not 5 stars but we were not looking for that. They are warm with plasma TV and rather small. But we wanted a reliable hotel and we found it.
The breakfast does not have smoked salmon and champain but the other expected items of a breakfast are there. The price logic for this part of the world and season of the year.
We come back.

Room Tip: Be sure you have WIFI signal in your room

Some people do moan a lot don't they?

I usually try and avoid chains hotels like Best Western, mainly because they usually have their head offices in a different country from the one you are staying in so they repatriate the profits and no benefit accrues to the local economy, however I gather that this one is locally owned.

What do you expect it is a Best Western? It is comfortable, I had only booked a single but got a double, the bed was comfortable, and having slept in some uncomfortable ones during the previous four weeks that made a change,

The room was warm which with the weather you get around there even in December which is high summer (!) is a must, the staff on reception were very helpful in finding out where I was supposed to be the following day to join a cruise. OK I did hit the problem that there was a non-English speaker but this is South America and they do not speak English so you expect that.

The internet was fine, which is not surprising considering the fibre optic networks that they have even out in the wilds of Chile such as Punta Arenas, far better than I get here in Greece!

This was the only place I came across in South America that genuine 'South American' power points so I had to cut the plug off my phone charger and attach it to my laptop charger, strange really because everywhere else I went they power outlets were 'universal and would take either a European two pin plug or a USA flat pin.....

Oh and it didn't smell of smoke, I had given up smoking a month before so to me at that time the smell of smoke was completely disgusting and I would have noticed.

Breakfast was great up there on the top floor with a great view, the coffee was terrible but then it is everywhere in South America, pricewise it costs what you would expect for South America too.

Room Tip: None that I can think of but if you do not like the room they show you ask for another one.....Befor...

Thank you very much about finding a good hotel, I clarify that being a Best Western, the hotel belongs to a family of Punta Arenas, therefore, the income is earned in the city. and all is spent on maintenance and modernization.

I stayed at the Finis Terrae for ~ 1 week in Dec 2011. The rooms are very comfortable and clean. The housekeeping staff do a pretty good job. The front desk staff is very helpful and conversing in English is not a problem. The Wifi was reliable and not bad (I understand that all of Punta Arenas suffers from a less than fast internet speed).
The restaurant on the top floor serves meals with a good selection. Breakfast is included and is a hearty offering of the typical breakfast fare.
The hotel is centrally located and is in a great spot to try other restaurants and activities from. Due to the central location of the hotel, noisy street celebrations (such as a win in soccer for the home team) are intrusive. Otherwise, leaving the windows closed is sufficient to blank out the street noise. You may want to request a room that does not face the main street, but only if you are a light sleeper.
The hotel seems to be a common selection since it was always busy.
I would return to this hotel without any hesitation. I would recommend it as a solid option.

Rooms are nice and clean, restaurant on 6th floor has great views, bar on first floor is friendly and low key. Staff is helpful, internet works, a bit slow. You can walk from here to pretty much everywhere.

Hotel Finis Terrae a good place to stay. Good Staff, Comfortable accomodations, willing staff, and very good restaurant with a view on the 6th floor. While the rate is higher than you would expect at other Best Westerns in other parts of our planet, Punta Arenas is, after all, the "end of the earth. " You won't regret staying here. Parking is free but on the street.

The best thing about Best Western Finis Terrae was the front desk service provided by Julio. He spoke good English and was very helpful. We were just spending one night in Punta Arenas on our way back from Torres del Paine so we could go see the penguins. We had reservations for the Isla Magdalena ferry but unfortunately due to high winds, the ferry was canceled. So we decided to go to Seno Otway instead and Julio helped us book this. He also reserved a taxi to the airport for the next morning for us and answered all of our questions about Punta Arenas. Five stars for the service that Julio provided.

The main reason we booked at Finis Terrae is because we were led to believe it was a 100% non-smoking hotel. In fact, on its website, the first item listed under “Hotel Amenities” is “100% non-smoking including public areas.” Well, this is not true because there is a bar on the first floor where smoking is allowed. Although the rest of the first floor is supposed to be non-smoking, the door to the bar is kept wide open all day long which means the smoke just comes out to the first floor lounge and reception area, essentially making it pointless that these areas are designated as “non-smoking.” When you enter the hotel, you are in fact hit with a very strong odor of smoke which continues at the reception desk while you are checking in—a terrible reception. This was a great disappointment. There was also literature within the rooms that suggested there were smoking and non-smoking floors within the hotel. We were on the 5th floor and all of the rooms on this floor had giant no-smoking logos on the doors but there was an odd odor in the air as if they were trying to cover up smoking smells.

The room itself was serviceable. We had reserved a queen bed but the room actually had a king bed. The shower was awkward, very difficult to step into and out of as it was very high but then the showerhead was kind of low. They aren’t going to win any awards for style and the furniture was old but the room had everything you needed for one night.

The sixth floor houses a restaurant and large lounge, which have large windows with panoramic views of Punta Arenas, such as it is. This area was designated as non-smoking. The welcome drinks were not very good (I didn’t bother finishing the red wine and the pisco sour was the worst we ever tasted). The buffet breakfast was fine, featuring the usual suspects.

You wouldn’t want an extended stay here. It seems Punta Arenas is just a transfer point to the cruise ships or Torres del Paine so most people need a room for just a night or two anyway.

We did notice a large brand new all-glass exterior hotel when we were walking around. It’s called Dreams Hotel and doesn’t yet seem to have a website. It definitely was not on our radar when we were doing our research back in September and October for our January 2010 trip. It is currently listed under the B&Bs/Inns section of TripAdvisor (though it seems like it should be listed as a hotel) and has only 4 reviews and you can see the photo of the exterior there. Its immediate surroundings seem kind of sketchy but it’s at the end of O’Higgins which is the street that has a bunch of good restaurants. Seems like it would be worth looking into.

Dear,
Thank you for stay in Hotel Best Western Finis Terrae.

About complain letter we can say:

The information about ''Non-Smonking property" was wrong, we have the Restobar ''Novaterrae" and 10 rooms for Smoker located in second floor. If you check the web site you will see that the message is not there. We know that the odor is a big problem for ona non smonking person, after you complain I bought two Ozone Machine and we install 2 Extractor Fan, for an appropiate ventilation of the Restobar. Moreover, I bought two portable ozone machine for rooms.
About the Bathroom: We bought step for handicap and we install grabs in the shower to help to step into and out.
You have to know that every day we try to do our best, I hope to see you the next time that you are in Punta Arenes.

Best Regards,
